Dunlop to spearhead EP

Dunlop to spearhead EP

The EP Kings have made four changes to the team that started in the First Division final for their promotion-relegation clash against the Free State Cheetahs.

Former Bulls and Tuks pivot Wesley Dunlop will wear the No 10 jersey as he rotates with George Whitehead, who drops the bench. Another switch in the backline sees inside centre Shane Gates come in for the rested Tiger Mangweni.

There are two injury-forced changes among the forwards. Lock David Bullbring and loosehead prop Jaco Engels fill in for Darron Nell and Schalk Ferreira respectively.

No 13 Wayne Stevens takes over the captaincy during Nell and flank Luke Watson’s injury absence.

The first leg will be played in Bloemfontein this Friday at 7:10pm.

EP Kings – 15 SP Marais, 14 Paul Perez, 13 Wayne Stevens (c), 12 Shane Gates, 11 Marcello Sampson, 10 Wesley Dunlop, 9 Falie Oelschig, 8 Cornell Du Preez, 7 Wimpie van der Walt, 6 Devin Oosthuizen, 5 David Bullbring, 4 Reynier Bernardo, 3 Clint Newland, 2 Hannes Franklin, 1 Jaco Engels.
Subs: 16 Frank Herne, 17 Andre Schlechter, 18 Wayne van Heerden, 19 Mpho Mbiyozo, 20 Scott Mathie, 21 George Whitehead, 22 Michael Killian.

Pity that the Kings are not playing against Griquas in the play off. Cheetahs will probably be too strong for them especially as they will field a very weakened team.

Kings can rest a bunch of players for this game. Being a promotion relegation game, there is zero incentive to win. Because should they lose, they’ll just get the Government’s Ministry of SARU to shift the goal posts to somehow include them in the Premier Division.

So the Kings will play S15 but might not be in the currie cup.

Why don’t they just bump both the Kings and Pumas up to the premier division – with all the boks away, the teams are a lot more equal.

Also, the Bulls or WP could have easily ended up having to play this promotion\relegation match. The fact that their boks were doing national duty should be something you get rewarded for, not penalised.

@katman-4: Even if they don’t use their political connections to get in, they’ll have a super rugby squad to earn promotion next year and probably no Boks, which improves their chances

Ripple effect of their inclusion in super rugby not only hits the Lions but whichever team finishes last in Currie Cup next year. If it’s Griquas, they may never get back in. Two teams screwed for the sake of one
