Aussie butthead gets two-Test ban

Australian Scott Higginbotham was banned for two Tests for kneeing and headbutting All Blacks captain Richie McCaw.

The All Blacks were understandably upset that no action was taken at that crucial juncture in the game.

‘I saw the headbutt – it’s another cheap shot,’ coach Steve Hansen said. ‘He seems to get them every week but everyone seems to miss them.’

Sanzar judicial officer Jannie Lubbe, who exonerated Wallabies playmaker Quade Cooper after he kneed McCaw in the head during the Tri-Nations decider in Brisbane last year, categorised Higginbotham’s foul play as ‘low level’.

Lubbe was of the opinion that the kneeing was more ‘was more of a bump than a hit’.

The headbutt, meanwhile, ‘was reckless and not executed with much force’.

Lubbe noted McCaw was not injured and was able to play on.

    n 1997 Keith Lawrence the NZRU Referee Manager sent an e-mail to the Australian Referee Manager Russell Trotter and in it referred to the fact that they needed to teach the jarpies a lesson. This was regarding some issue during that seasons Super 12.

    Russell Trotter inadvertently sent the e-mail to Freek Burger the SA Referee Manager at the time and all hell broke loose.

    @McAwesome-256: I don’t like or agree with his comments either but if people actually spoke to Pops about rugby instead of flinging mud at him, he might not have to react. Some of what he has to put up with is shocking so he now preemptively starts out aggressive. I try not to take the bait but once in a while the temptation gets too much

    Only thing I hold against Higginbotham and Dean Greyling for that matter is that they didn’t do a complete man job.
    The ABs are good enough to win without McCaw ‘heroics’, at times it seemed he does his transgressions just to establish dominance of the referees.

    Conviction rate probably so low because the cops in SA are too incompetent to investigate properly or too fat and lazy.
