SA’s long-term investment

Johan Goosen has the potential to become a truly world-class flyhalf for the Springboks.

Every elite rugby playing country wishes they had a Dan Carter. But none more so than the All Blacks’ bitter rivals, the Springboks.

There have been false dawns, Gaffie du Toit the most notable of those. Others have been cast aside early as pretenders. Not so Goosen. He has something special, with just enough special to stir hope that the Springboks may have, in him, at very least a strong rebuttal to Carter, at best an answer to him.

In an exclusive interview with SA Rugby magazine, Goosen talks about:

  • How he doesn’t feel the pressure of Test rugby
  • Why he sometimes gets very emotional
  • His early playing days
  • Why he’s always prepared to ‘have a go’ when it comes to long-range goal kicks
  • Why there’s no difference between kicking for posts at Super Rugby and Test levels
  • How he deals with criticism
  • His preferred style of play
  • His challengers for the Bok No 10 jersey
  • Why he’ll stay at the Cheetahs

Also in the new issue:

– Why the Springboks must make an honest assessment of their 2012 season if they are to improve

– Once South African rugby’s forgotten man, Francois Louw could ironically become one of the Springboks’ most important figures in seasons to come

Cory Jane has proven that size doesn’t matter when it comes to Test wings

SA Rugby magazine analyses the Springboks’ end-of-year tour opponents

– Leinster hooker Richardt Strauss could soon be representing Ireland on the Test stage

Tim Visser was born and raised in the Netherlands, where rugby is an insignificant sport. Now he’s playing at the highest level for Scotland

– England centre Brad Barritt is finally starting to realise his potential as a Test player

– Ghanaian-born wing Raymond Rhule had an outstanding Currie Cup for the Cheetahs

JP du Plessis is pleased to be back in the Western Cape after short stints with the Sydney Roosters and Melbourne Rebels

Warren Gatland will become the second New Zealander to coach the Lions when they tour Australia next year, but he’s unlikely to make the same mistakes as Graham Henry in 2001

not all kiwis were happy with Hansens appointment. buth Hurri and I on here have voiced our concerns, mainly with his coaching, but I think he has been taking media lessons from PDV :)

Here’s a nice, mild one for you Pops; late last week a policeman at a Pretoria Police station left his keys in his double-cab bakkie while he went to “spend a penny”. The fact that it was parked inside a police station presented no problem to a passing “pedestrian” who promptly helped himself.

The bakkie was rolled in the ensuing chase and the (unhurt) thief was arrested. But as usual, the taxpayers will bear the brunt of this senseless deed…

No, my man. I don’t know that. I do know that we are going to do a Lions on you.

You had a stronger team last year playing against a weaker Lions team in the final and you came up short.

Prepare for a repeat and lots of snot en trane.

    WP by 10… at least.

@David-197: A lot worse than what was said yesterday has been said before. Usually via the duct pipes of HG, Fern or the Devil’s spawnpredawn….

As I said yesterday, the Sharks team lost their inferiority complex a good few years back.
It is time some of their fans did the same. “Nobody loves us, everybody hates us, we’re gonna eat some worms”.

This is what happens though, when people turn online communication into some sort of reality.
1st to go is the sense of humour, 2nd to go is the ability to ever find said ‘sense of humour’ ever again.

@poppa69-207: i remember when Shag was appointed, i said i was eager to see his handling of the press…when the team was winning he could handle himself but one draw and he immediately flies off the handle and roasts Aus

i recall his 2009 “pressure? this is not pressure, i was a policeman and pressure is walking into someone’s house and telling them their son is no more, that’s pressure”

    go Shag :D

  • 226.The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food: Reply to this comment

@Nikita-212: Yeah I think that’s a safe bet :) In fact, if you folk post another article on Lambie (one in which you announce he has won the IRB player of the year award, after the input of 500 international journalists and kenners was collected – ((we’ll just ask the Kiwis on the site to play along with our deception)) – the return might be sooner.

(I’m sure someone could rig a few fake articles and Tweets to back you up)

@Transformation-196: Storm in a teacup. When I saw the headline, I thought Hansen was a bit of a d-ck considering Harris qualified through his grannie and couldn’t even break into the Blues so he went offshore. Nothing wrong with that. But it was in response to a direct question – is there a problem with our talent identification program and his answer was no. He then says the aussies should develop their own talent if they want five super franchises and i’m inclined to agree with him. The ARU probably should listen.

The PI poaching line always makes nice headlines though
