SA’s long-term investment
23 Oct 2012
Johan Goosen has the potential to become a truly world-class flyhalf for the Springboks.
Every elite rugby playing country wishes they had a Dan Carter. But none more so than the All Blacks’ bitter rivals, the Springboks.
There have been false dawns, Gaffie du Toit the most notable of those. Others have been cast aside early as pretenders. Not so Goosen. He has something special, with just enough special to stir hope that the Springboks may have, in him, at very least a strong rebuttal to Carter, at best an answer to him.

In an exclusive interview with SA Rugby magazine, Goosen talks about:
- How he doesn’t feel the pressure of Test rugby
- Why he sometimes gets very emotional
- His early playing days
- Why he’s always prepared to ‘have a go’ when it comes to long-range goal kicks
- Why there’s no difference between kicking for posts at Super Rugby and Test levels
- How he deals with criticism
- His preferred style of play
- His challengers for the Bok No 10 jersey
- Why he’ll stay at the Cheetahs
Also in the new issue:
– Why the Springboks must make an honest assessment of their 2012 season if they are to improve
– Once South African rugby’s forgotten man, Francois Louw could ironically become one of the Springboks’ most important figures in seasons to come
– Cory Jane has proven that size doesn’t matter when it comes to Test wings
– SA Rugby magazine analyses the Springboks’ end-of-year tour opponents
– Leinster hooker Richardt Strauss could soon be representing Ireland on the Test stage
– Tim Visser was born and raised in the Netherlands, where rugby is an insignificant sport. Now he’s playing at the highest level for Scotland
– England centre Brad Barritt is finally starting to realise his potential as a Test player
– Ghanaian-born wing Raymond Rhule had an outstanding Currie Cup for the Cheetahs
– JP du Plessis is pleased to be back in the Western Cape after short stints with the Sydney Roosters and Melbourne Rebels
– Warren Gatland will become the second New Zealander to coach the Lions when they tour Australia next year, but he’s unlikely to make the same mistakes as Graham Henry in 2001

@Skeppie-247:
Only two ladies left for Heavens Game.
23 Oct 2012, 13:20 pm
@Transformation-244: The Kings Transie! Everyone has to say nice things about the Kings otherwise they get banished from the cool table and have to eat with the school bugle player next to the rubbish bins.
23 Oct 2012, 13:20 pm
@Transformation-244:
The Kings supporters haven’t really been bashed.
That officially starts in February 2013.
23 Oct 2012, 13:21 pm
@Nikita-246: Contracting = Working without the benefits
@Skeppie-247: Nah Skeppie, when one falls another stands up, we sharks never hunt alone
23 Oct 2012, 13:21 pm
@Nikita-251: Are you mistaking me for a woman?
23 Oct 2012, 13:23 pm
@KingTJ-254: Cool, so we are an army of two against the horde from the mountain…..good thing we will have a lot to crow about come Saturday night! Although I must try to remember to be a good winner not like “Pops the arrogant”
23 Oct 2012, 13:23 pm
Sorry guys (and ladies). What exodus?
23 Oct 2012, 13:23 pm
@Transformation-244: Playing the ‘victim’ is best left to those who can pull it off with some success…..
Thing is, if someone pipes up with a “WP are *** fat sperm whales who fudgepack in the scrums” (which we do hear regularly) – how on earth can I take it personally and sob about it? If I do take offence….it’s because I am a weak and spineless git, and NOT because I have any LEGIT reason to feel offended.
If anyone is ragged to sh y te on this blog, and most others, it is the WP – and deservedly so at times, as we are the only team who has honestly won fuckall of note in years.
Sticks and stones….sticks and stones…..

@David-151:
“they don’t like us Sharks supporters anywhere”
“[Translate]”
priceless
23 Oct 2012, 13:25 pm
@Skeppie-255: seeing how you Sharkievarkies go on here you wonder sometimes.
23 Oct 2012, 13:25 pm
@Skeppie-256: Haha!! I just had to change the direction of his boasting( and it worked). We will just have to cut the horde off at the sea, and have them all drown in our warm waters,
23 Oct 2012, 13:25 pm
@Skeppie-256: Well stick around
You will be joyous come Saturday, and I’m certain your fwendoos will return. No ways HG is going to stay away.
23 Oct 2012, 13:26 pm
@Skeppie-256: Sharks looking like the only SA team that belong in this decade
23 Oct 2012, 13:27 pm
I have just finished reading the threads.
Bizarre.
So now we are told that every single person in Durban supports the Sharks? I find that hard to believe…
23 Oct 2012, 13:27 pm
@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food-154:
how very kiwi’esque of these sharkie supporters
and the winner is… *drum roll*….
23 Oct 2012, 13:27 pm
@Skeppie-256:
C’mon, you know how it works. If you lose you congratulate the winner first, then post all the reasons why you were robbed. If you win, you say “Hard luck, well played” and then go away sniggering. :lol”
23 Oct 2012, 13:28 pm
@i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-259: Now if that isn’t a Jannie Jammerbal quote right there, I don’t know
23 Oct 2012, 13:28 pm
@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food-258: You must have such a big C.o.ck as a sperm whale that is probably why you can take it. So stop trying to make it a pissing contest of who can take it and who cant;)
23 Oct 2012, 13:28 pm
@Nikita-246: Ok got it.
Makes sense, gives them plausible deniability.
I think everyone on here understands the way things work here, I have on occasion removed myself for a time, cooled off so to speak.
I found earlier this season that the conflict (with Sharks fans) was getting so personal that it started to effect the way I looked at the players, which isn’t fair, so I stopped.
No one’s holding a gun to my head either way, life goes on yadda yadda….
23 Oct 2012, 13:28 pm
@i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-259:
Yeah, I was tempted to add some translations to the cut and paste.
23 Oct 2012, 13:29 pm
Skeppie
yep. then the monotony of calling the winners filthy cheating scum, or simply cheats becomes the chorus
oh wait, thats Saffa supporters.
23 Oct 2012, 13:29 pm
@cane-229: @Nikita-230: Puma is dead to this site.
23 Oct 2012, 13:30 pm
@Transformation-244: The Valke.
23 Oct 2012, 13:30 pm
@wnbb-260: That’s mean…and sexist…shame on you
23 Oct 2012, 13:30 pm
@KingTJ-268: Temper….temper fella.
23 Oct 2012, 13:30 pm
@stormersboy-269:
You have to have a laugh, don’t you.
I mean, if I had to take personally some of the stuff that, for example, Heavens Game dishes out to Province supporters, I’d have been on antidepressants.
Bit bloody surreal to be affected by posts on a blog!
That being said, I’m always one for being courteous, I hope my past has reflected that.
23 Oct 2012, 13:31 pm
@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food-262:
Technically, HG never walked and took the RT oath, so he’ll be back. Besides, where would he be without some Stormers to insult?
23 Oct 2012, 13:32 pm
@stormersboy-269: its been tough for wp supporters against sharks supporters this season.
23 Oct 2012, 13:32 pm
@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food-262: HG isn’t welcome on any of the other blogs, not in his current form so he has no option. He would personally be the one who would be a welcome loss. You will notice that when he isn’t on the threads the rest are relatively tame, good natured jibes aside.
He’s a troll, plain and simple. He posts outlandish statements to get a reaction, why no one knows. He’s not the only one mind you.
23 Oct 2012, 13:32 pm
@David-277:
Heavens Game has been on record often that he refuses to to go to that site – something about refusing to divulge his identity and provide a blood sample and go to wife-swopping sessions…that’s where the whole “Mormon ^ 5″ thing came from…
23 Oct 2012, 13:33 pm
@David-277:
Indeed. We WP supporters give Heavens Game’s existence meaning.
WE…
COMPLETE HIM.
23 Oct 2012, 13:33 pm
@stormersboy-269:
Complaints are received regularly. Freedom of speech is one of our constitutional rights – right? This is a blog and most hide behind their keyboards.
23 Oct 2012, 13:33 pm
@Skeppie-252: says who? roast them i say!
23 Oct 2012, 13:34 pm
David
that comes from touch rugby not only handlin skills but learning to run into the gap, or the appropriate shoulder rather than head on.
it’s ingrained at a young age.
23 Oct 2012, 13:34 pm
@WP-Forever-280:
Thanks, I wondered about that.
23 Oct 2012, 13:34 pm
@David-266: Too true, not to mention outright cheating by the other team through bribing the ref, suzie’s niece serving tainted food at the Beverly Hills or the startling revelation that Jaco Peyper had dinner with Fleckie the night before and is now dating Fleckies, cousins, roomates 2nd best friend. I have all the excuses ready…should we lose…..which we won’t…..I hope!
23 Oct 2012, 13:34 pm
@Sasuke-278: True. Opening game aside, it’s not been pretty.
23 Oct 2012, 13:34 pm
@David-266:
Before I forget, well done on the Canaries win on Saturday against my team.
Hopefully the win will set the tone for the rest of the season.
23 Oct 2012, 13:35 pm
Bottom Line is, SHAAKS is going to have some We Pee for dinner come Saterday. Looking forward to it…..Braai beforehand, drinks during the game and massive party afterwards…..Dont stop at 1stop, because you never leave..
23 Oct 2012, 13:35 pm
@poppa69-284:
I fully agree.
I have often stated that, in my opinion, five-down touch rugby is a fantastic coaching tool for rugby union.
South African mentality is to coach our youngsters to try to run OVER and THROUGH opposing players. We get coached to look for the impact…it would be so much more efficient if we coached our kids to try to run AROUND opposing players.
But it is hard to undo decades and decades of indoctrination…
23 Oct 2012, 13:36 pm
@poppa69-284:
Yep, and your weight groups also make sense.
23 Oct 2012, 13:37 pm
@Skeppie-286:
I stayed at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Umhlanga a few weeks ago.
Quite a nice hotel, but the service wasn’t fantastic. But a beautiful setting and nice rooms.
23 Oct 2012, 13:37 pm
@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food-258: would you take offence if gareth duncan said WP/Stormers are “poluting (sic) the site” with your siya kolisi “man-love”?
23 Oct 2012, 13:38 pm
@fishdish-206:
yip
am hoping he puts in good showings from next season, in the position.
23 Oct 2012, 13:38 pm
king
are you a sharks fan? I
23 Oct 2012, 13:38 pm
@WP-Forever-290: Buuuuut if the Boks started playing differently surely the up and coming players (kids) would follow suit.
23 Oct 2012, 13:38 pm
Speaking of the Internet and anonymity, has anyone else seen that story about the “worst troll of all time” on Reddit, going by the name “ViolentAcrez”, was unmasked?
He lost his job.
23 Oct 2012, 13:39 pm
@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food-262: i’m interested to see how HG will spin this “exodus”
something about north & south “traditional powers” i presume…
23 Oct 2012, 13:39 pm
@KingTJ-289:
I reckon the Sharks will win by at least 10 points on Saturday.
23 Oct 2012, 13:40 pm
@poppa69-295: Yes all the way!!
