SA’s long-term investment

Johan Goosen has the potential to become a truly world-class flyhalf for the Springboks.

Every elite rugby playing country wishes they had a Dan Carter. But none more so than the All Blacks’ bitter rivals, the Springboks.

There have been false dawns, Gaffie du Toit the most notable of those. Others have been cast aside early as pretenders. Not so Goosen. He has something special, with just enough special to stir hope that the Springboks may have, in him, at very least a strong rebuttal to Carter, at best an answer to him.

In an exclusive interview with SA Rugby magazine, Goosen talks about:

  • How he doesn’t feel the pressure of Test rugby
  • Why he sometimes gets very emotional
  • His early playing days
  • Why he’s always prepared to ‘have a go’ when it comes to long-range goal kicks
  • Why there’s no difference between kicking for posts at Super Rugby and Test levels
  • How he deals with criticism
  • His preferred style of play
  • His challengers for the Bok No 10 jersey
  • Why he’ll stay at the Cheetahs

Also in the new issue:

– Why the Springboks must make an honest assessment of their 2012 season if they are to improve

– Once South African rugby’s forgotten man, Francois Louw could ironically become one of the Springboks’ most important figures in seasons to come

Cory Jane has proven that size doesn’t matter when it comes to Test wings

SA Rugby magazine analyses the Springboks’ end-of-year tour opponents

– Leinster hooker Richardt Strauss could soon be representing Ireland on the Test stage

Tim Visser was born and raised in the Netherlands, where rugby is an insignificant sport. Now he’s playing at the highest level for Scotland

– England centre Brad Barritt is finally starting to realise his potential as a Test player

– Ghanaian-born wing Raymond Rhule had an outstanding Currie Cup for the Cheetahs

JP du Plessis is pleased to be back in the Western Cape after short stints with the Sydney Roosters and Melbourne Rebels

Warren Gatland will become the second New Zealander to coach the Lions when they tour Australia next year, but he’s unlikely to make the same mistakes as Graham Henry in 2001

The Oyster Box is where it’s at.

Thanks, I hope so. We seem to have lost some cohesion since Lambert left. The problem is that it’s becoming more and more difficult for clubs coming from the Championship to compete against the wealthier Premier sides. Much like the CC in that respect.

yep. think it also alleviates the mums somewhat too. they know their kids aren’t going to get flattened by some huge kid twice their size.

Right next door? I was told they have fantastic food.

We got a great corporate discount for the Beverly Hills, we were there for the shopping centre conference.

My highlight, though, was popping in to Cottonfields late at night and seeing a 70-year-old sing karaoke.

There was lots of mutton dressed as lamb…

I stayed there when it first opened. Used to play snooker against Sol and his Indian head waiter for a glass of Remy Martin a game. I think the head waiter ended up virtually owning all of the hotels stock.

  • 319.Skeppie: Reply to this comment

@poppa69-314: No no no he will need to do a lot more than that to qualify for the title. To acheive that aclaim he will need to slate someone else’s country non stop, insult its people, show no respect for that country, be arrogant, a bad sport and a boastful bore.

    @David-302:
Yes it always has been difficult for teams to compete coming straight from the Championship to the big league.

Before the wealth was spread between the top 3 teams but now things have changed overnight with Man City, West Brom, and Newcastle doing well.

@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food-313: please, don’t say “us saffas”, i’ve take my fair share of kak on this blog and others too…you would’ve been disgusted when most of the so-called “Bulls” bloggers that left to form RT changed their nics to include a “JAN” and insulted Rossoneri.

Grant10′s son and family weren’t spared either…now for someone to cry because Nikita said they’re “poluting the site” is just laughable

I think that West Brom and Newcastle will start slipping to mid/lower table after Xmas. That’s when lack of depth starts to take its toll.

  • 324.poppa69: Reply to this comment

    Skeppie

yep Bakkies really needs to change his posting style doesn’t he ? he does that daily to us kiwis, but is somehow exempt of criticism

    strange huh?

mind you, with nics like “sniveling little kiw pricks”, “fu.ck new Zealand ” etc one does find it hard not to respond.

    oh, you meant me huh?

    Horrible times.

  • 327.The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food: Reply to this comment

@Transformation-322: :) I couldn’t exactly say ‘the Sharks saffas’ – as that would have earned me an interweb beatdown from KingTJ ;) So I went for the safety in numbers option, and said “WE Saffas”.

In the cases you mention, the line was well and truly crossed. Polluting a site is not an insult that can be categorised with those you mention :) Pwecious indeed.

@poppa69-324: Yes I do, you are no better than Bakkies. You would never find me making comments like that. I may be unhappy with Kiwi bloggers on this site at times and may make some comments about specific things relating to the AB’s but I will always be respectful of NZ, the AB’s and the historical competition between our countries.

Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer’s hopes of touring with a fit and strong team to Ireland, Scotland and England next month took another blow on Tuesday when Bok loose forward Jacques Potgieter was ruled out for six to eight weeks with a groin injury.

    yes no potgieter for eoyt

Yes, between Xmas and new year, thats when the business end starts.

Hopefully Arsenal can compete at the top. We haven’t won a trophy since 2005. Wenger I feel should take a position on the board and give someone else an opportunity.
