Coetzee backs rookie for final

Coetzee backs rookie for final

WP coach Allister Coetzee has selected Damian de Allende at No 12 for Saturday’s Currie Cup final against the Sharks.

De Allende replaces Marcel Brache in this crucial position; the first time he will partner Juan de Jongh in midfield. This is the only change made by Coetzee following last week’s semi-final win against the Golden Lions.

A season-ending injury to Ederies Arendse allowed De Allende to come into the squad, and a string of strong performances eventually saw him securing a starting berth on the wing during the latter half of the season.

Coetzee feels that the powerful player is good enough to start at No 12 in the most important game of the Currie Cup season. It’s clear that the slightly-built Brache does not fit the requirement for a clash of this nature.

‘Marcel will still have a job to do from the bench, but we’ve gone with Damian to start because we need somebody who can front up physically in that position,’ said the Province coach.

‘He has explosive pace and is a good ball carrier. He has good core skills and is a solid defender. Whenever he has played for us, he has made a massive impression. He did that again last week; his contribution was telling.’

Coetzee doesn’t feel that the fact that De Allende hasn’t played at No 12 at this level will count against him. De Allende’s inexperience is also not viewed as a shortcoming.

‘The conditions underfoot will be heavy, and Damian is the player we need for these conditions. He’s young but he’s good enough to be handed this opportunity.

‘He has played in that position for the WP U21s before. He will also have some experienced players around him like Juan and Bryan Habana. Damian knows what’s required of him in that position, he knows our systems having been involved for some time.’

Gio Aplon is retained at fullback despite the superior kicking game of Joe Pietersen. Coetzee explained that it would help to have Aplon’s left boot complementing Demetri Catrakilis’s right in what should be a big tussle for territory.

Former Springbok prop Deon Carstens and provincial veteran Brok Harris are also named on the bench, with younger front rowers in Frans Malherbe and Steven Kitshoff backed to start. The WP coaches are hoping that this will allow the team to finish strongly.

Western Province – 15 Gio Aplon, 14 Gerhard van den Heever, 13 Juan de Jongh, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Demetri Catrakilis, 9 Nic Groom, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Don Armand, 6 Deon Fourie (c), 5 De Kock Steenkamp, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Frans Malherbe, 2 Scarra Ntubeni, 1 Steven Kitshoff.
Subs: 16 Deon Carstens, 17 Brok Harris, 18 Wilhelm van der Sluys, 19 Jebb Sinclair, 20 Louis Schreuder, 21 Marcel Brache, 22 Joe Pietersen.

I still believe that teams who want to win the S15 of a given year need to win a Conference Trophy that year.

It is just too tough, near impossible, to fly halfway across the world for a final, and then try and win it.

@willievz-101: Agree with you 100%. Ditto for the Currie Cup re: travel is bad…. ;) I mean, look at all the travel the WP kids have had to put in the last 2 weeks. It’s insane. CT, Jhb, CT, Durban. (Not even in 1st class). The Sharkies would have installed themselves as exhausted, over achieving, supremely talented but total underdogs if they were in our position.

To win – you need to stay at home.

Western Province, Transvaal and the Free State stayed away in 1899 because of the Anglo-Boer War. WP and Transvaal could have given us a a serious challenge.

Amazing to think that Natal won the trophy for the first time in 1990.

De Allende is a good move, but even better would be start Schreuder at 10 and play Catrakillis off bench, start with Pietersen at FB to take goal kicks and Aplon at 11 Habana on bench or else Aplon 14, Habana 11, Vd Heever on bench

either way would be better to start Schreuder at 10 and run it flat and hard at Lambie first half.. that the way to unsettle this sanctimonious lot.

Catrakillis is WP’s one weak link, Groom – Schreuder half back pairing and we take these guppies in their own little fortress.

Assagai your posts suck. You would want to drop Habana for Pietersen to fir Schroeder in. Youre mad.

  • 138.assagai: Reply to this comment

@Rhys7-137: if you want to beat Sharks only chance is take the game to them don’t wait for them to take it to you.. and only way to do that is play it hard and fast and direct up channel 1

which means Coetsee should have taken the gamble and started Schreuder at 10 leave Catrakillis on bench if it comes down to a penalty shoot out which he will know by 2nd half if his gamble paid off.. which it could do.

So if I want to keep some momentum for 2nd half I either start Habana with Vd Heever on wings or Aplon with Habana or Aplon with Vd Heever and have Habana on bench for 2nd half explosion.. Don’t make all that much difference which wing starts or finishes but what does make a big difference is which fly half starts and finishes because that will be the entire fulcrum of the game plan.. and Schreuder offers way much more at 10 than Catrakillis ever could or would.

  • 139.assagai: Reply to this comment

Even Joe Pietersen is a better option at 10 than Catrakillis.. at last resort Catrakillis can slot in at 15 in a last ditch effort to rake up points if it comes down to a kicking duel.. but the game should be taken to the Sharks from kick off and with Catrakillis at 10 I can’t see that happening.. WP could be on back foot all game long if Catrakilis runs the game from 10.

  • 148.whatever: Reply to this comment

The injury list is a real worry, not only at WP, but all of the SA sides. Not sure what it is, lack of conditioning can’t be blamed as Bissy and Schaulk were knees, JP thumb……Frans ? can’t recall what his injury was, Bekker back etc. Shows up our genuine lack of depth as I think HM was mal playing Taute at 13 v the AB’s.

  • 149.Slartibartfast: Reply to this comment

    @whatever-148:

It is hard to tell and probably a combination of a number of factors. I would think rather than conditioning maybe a case of incorrect training i.e. to hard, to long or just wrong focus.

Number of injuries can be classified as accidents but even then it can possibly be traced back to the training pitch. Of course as someone mentione on here before, our game plan also lend itself to a very abbrasive approach and the toll on the body adds up as the season progresses.

All said and done it does seem injuries follows a patern and some years you better off than others.

As for my own team, as long as we have Naka we have little hope…
