Etzebeth up for three awards

Etzebeth up for three awards

Eben Etzebeth has been nominated in three categories for the Saru Player of the Year Awards.

The 20-year-old lock has starred for the Stormers, Springboks and now Western Province in what has been a fantastic rookie season. In recognition of his consistent efforts, he has been nominated in the categories for Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year and Super Rugby Player of the Year.

In the main category of Player of the Year, Etzebeth will be up against Bryan Habana, Keegan Daniel, JP Pietersen and Pat Lambie.

For the first time the public were able to vote in the awards, through a voting process on the Springboks’ Facebook page, alongside the country’s rugby media, who traditionally vote for the winners in some of the categories.

    Cape Town – English club Bath confirmed on Wendesday that they have signed Western Province and Stormers loose forward Nick Koster.

    The 23-year-old – who represented South Africa at all age levels and was also selected for the Barbarians in 2008 – has played Super Rugby for the Stormers since 2009.

    “Nick is a very exciting young player and we are delighted that he has agreed to move to Bath,” Bath coach Gary Gold said.

    “He is a hard-working, incredibly motivated guy, and we are sure he will fit in with the club ethos we are developing.

    “We have a very talented and competitive back row at present, and Nick knows he will have to fight for his place, but he is up for the challenge and we can’t wait to see the results.”

    Gold, whose side are seventh in the table after six games, said he hoped that Koster’s signing would be the start of a series of exchanges between Bath and Western Province.

    “We’d like to thank Western Province for their co-operation in allowing Nick to join us, and we look forward to a long and prosperous relationship with them,” he said.

    “Hopefully it will allow players to potentially spend time with the other club as and when the opportunity should arise

    Bath can reciprocate by sending us F Louw…

    @grant10-19:

    Not good news for the Stormers. I wonder how much Gary Gold has to do with it. Nic is a very good player (Transformation will disagree) but sadly seems to be injury prone so maybe he has decided to go and earn Pounds while his body still allows it. I am not sure whether he will be as good in England as in SA as his style of play is probably more suited to the firmer surfaces of our fields. Although the Stormers are very well covered at loose forwards it is still a huge loss especially as there is no guarantee that the injured will all be back and be as good as they were before their injuries.

    @Robzim-21: Howzit Rob….agree, sadly we did not get to see the very best of Koster…would love to see F Louw headed back to Stormers….maybe Gold will make a plan as I am sure F Louw is headed for a lengthy spell as Bok opensider by the looks of things and HM would surely want him at home…

    I bet SARU hands the team of the year to the Kings. I certainly would not put it past them.

    And how much of the season did Luke miss and still make the shortlist? They’ll probably give him the award too. All part of a concerted PR drive to change the woeful perception that the SA public (quite rightly) has of the Kings.

    Bryan should get Player of the Year, Eben young player.

    Koster going to Bath.

    @grant10-22:

    The last time I heard Nic was contracted till the end of 2013 so the early release by WP might mean there is something in the pipeline- it cannot be good for Bath to have Louw spending too much time with the Boks- he might even become the next Bok captain.

    @katman-23:

    Luke was very good when he played- I think he was the top try scorer for EP and scored something like 13 tries during the season despite missing a number of games.

  • 26.katman: Reply to this comment

    @Robzim-25: He scored 8 tries, which is not too shabby. But he missed a large chunk at the beginning of the season (shoulder operation?) and another chunk at the end (ankle?). I honestly feel if they give it to him it will be a token gesture to up his status. You won’t make someone MOM in a game where he only plays 15 minutes either side of half time, regardless how good he was.

    @Robzim-25: Hopefully the suits are working on a swap deal…..would be a fantastic coup if Stormers could get Louw back…..maybe start turning the semis and finals into winning something for a change….I see sharks teamm announced…..Sharks:

    15. Louis Ludik , 14. JP Pietersen , 13. Paul Jordaan, 12. Tim Whitehead, 11. Lwazi Mvovo, 10. Pat Lambie, 9. Cobus Reinach , 8. Keegan Daniel (Capt), 7. Willem Alberts, 6. Marcell Coetzee, 5. Anton Bresler , 4. Steven Sykes , 3. Jannie du Plessis , 2. Craig Burden , 1. Tendai Mtawarira
    Replacements: 16. Kyle Cooper, 17. Wiehahn Herbst, 18. Jandre Marais , 19. Jean Deysel , 20. Charl McLeod, 21. Meyer Bosman, 22. Odwa Ndungane

  • 28.grant10: Reply to this comment

    I see sharks dont really have a to the ball loosie type….

    Without Kyle Cooper they have also lost a bit of that ‘ fetcher ‘ ability as Burden prefers carrying to fetching….

    Perhaps I am clutching at straws but it may be a chink in the sharks armour.
