Cheetahs stay with big boys
26 Oct 2012
SIMON BORCHARDT saw the Free State Cheetahs retain their Currie Cup Premier Division status with a 16-6 win against the EP Kings in Port Elizabeth.
Having won the first promotion-relegation match 53-14 in Bloemfontein, the Cheetahs just needed to avoid defeat by 40-plus points, or get a bonus point, to stay in the top flight.
EP were never going to climb their Mount Everest after Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske opted to field his strongest line-up and heavy rain began to fall early in the match. Still, the hosts produced a far better performance than last week and may have won had they not played 50 minutes of the match with 14 men.
The Kings had 60% possession in the opening 10 minutes, with flyhalf George Whitehead kicking two penalties for a 6-0 lead, and their scrum was dominant.
The Cheetahs were frustrated by the wet conditions, which hampered their expansive game, and their mood didn’t improve when flyhalf Sias Ebersohn missed two penalties.
The Kings then suffered a major setback when scrumhalf Falie Oelschig was harshly red-carded for a punch on the half-hour mark, but they managed to go into the break with their lead intact.
Both sides had try-scoring opportunities in the third quarter, but as had been the case throughout the match, poor handling let them down.
Replacement wing Nico Scheepers finally got the Cheetahs on the board with a penalty in the 61st minute, and that was followed soon after by a game-breaking try from Sias Ebersohn.
Scheepers’ touchline conversion came in off the left-hand upright and he added two late penalties to seal the win.

Any dragons know of any good movies on TV tonight?
26 Oct 2012, 18:40 pm

When is Watson due back?
26 Oct 2012, 18:42 pm
@BrumbiesBoy-1:
There’s a horror movie commencing in 20 minutes.
Right here.
26 Oct 2012, 18:55 pm
Cheetahs….. be gentle.
26 Oct 2012, 18:58 pm
No Cheetahs dont be gentle. Hit them even harder this time. Lets aim for the 100 point mark. The more ridicule can be added to the Kings, the better the lesson to the ‘entitled’ portion of South African society that get things via political enforcement rather than merit.
MOER HULLE CHEETAHS !

26 Oct 2012, 19:02 pm
Don’t worry Kings,we will make a way for you to play CC rugby next year.
26 Oct 2012, 19:08 pm
The Kings should be better than last week- they will hopefully have learnt from the experience last week and be more used to the faster pace of the Cheetahs (in comparison to the pace of the premier league).
26 Oct 2012, 19:20 pm
Jirre – the Kings are in the lead. I hope someone takes a photo of that scoreboard.
26 Oct 2012, 19:25 pm
@Dawn-6: Hey Dawny. Where is Nikita today ? I want her to come on here and tell me what ‘bad boys’ us Sharks are again.
26 Oct 2012, 19:26 pm
Holy moly – the Kings have increased their lead ! WTF ? Did Malema go have a talk with Os about what the government is planning to pay him for his farm in the Free State ?
26 Oct 2012, 19:27 pm
‘n Maandlank
‘n Wetlook
Klap hulle, Konings!
26 Oct 2012, 19:29 pm
@KeurboomPark-12: Looks like the Cheetahs got a threat to lose today or face being relegated out of the Super 15 by the Limpopo Crocodiles.
26 Oct 2012, 19:31 pm
Joanne has briefly appeared on the preview thread
She is in dirtbin hob-knobbing with Sharks team
26 Oct 2012, 19:31 pm
Keep it up Kings,
26 Oct 2012, 19:32 pm
@Dawn-14: At least she knows how to pick a winner.
26 Oct 2012, 19:36 pm
Go LionKings!
26 Oct 2012, 19:37 pm
@Dawn-14: I think these Cheetahs have been sitting around listening to their Juanita Du Plessis CD on repeat, eating boerewors potjie on vetkoek and dopping Richelieu since their last game. One cant blame them but perhaps they just discounted the Kings a little too much.
26 Oct 2012, 19:39 pm
@Dusky-16:
She also said she was taking Suzie with her.
Whatever that means.
26 Oct 2012, 19:42 pm
Kamikazi like tackling by the Kings, specially by no 6 Boetie Britz.
26 Oct 2012, 19:42 pm
@I am a stormer-19: The Sharks b1tches will need more than Suzie buddy. They need the hand of the Lord – like the Bulls had in 2007. Are your guys all wearing their ***** t-shirts under their rugby jerseys ? I hope so for their sake.
26 Oct 2012, 19:42 pm
@Robzim-20: LOL ! Boetie Britz ! Only in PE….
26 Oct 2012, 19:43 pm
@Dusky-21: ***** = J e s u s
26 Oct 2012, 19:44 pm
@I am a stormer-19: Are they ready to praise the Lord that their cheating won them a game ? I hope they have all prayed and promised to go to church on Sunday.
26 Oct 2012, 19:46 pm
@Dusky-21:
Proud Province supporter, mate. Proud Province supporter. Always have been, always will be.
Good luck with your span tom.
PS. Why you swearing at me?
26 Oct 2012, 19:46 pm
@Dusky-22:
Boetie gaan border toe lol.
I see he is from Mossel Bay- went to Oakdale- Craig Jordaan is now questioniing his tackling technique.
26 Oct 2012, 19:48 pm
@Dusky-24:
Cheating won the game?
Mate, the game has yet to be played.
Let’s just let nature take its course.
26 Oct 2012, 19:51 pm
@I am a stormer-25: God has apparently silenced referees and touch judges before – especially against the Sharks.
So if I were Habana and his prayer group I would visit the chapel before the game. Maybe he can score another try at the death from illegal play.
Also, dont forget the t-shirts under the jerseys with ‘J e s u s loves WP’ written in permanent marker.
26 Oct 2012, 19:53 pm
@Robzim-26: Ha ha ha ha…I wish I could see it but then there is very little going on from an intellect perspective in PE – so, kamikaze style tackling would definitely be on the books.
Come on Cheetahs. Step it up.
26 Oct 2012, 19:53 pm
Red card for a punch – game over. Pity.
26 Oct 2012, 19:55 pm
@Dusky-28:
If that’s what it takes, Province will do it. You have to have belief.
26 Oct 2012, 19:55 pm
@Dusky-29:
It could have been a contest but with 14 players the Kings are dead and buried now.
26 Oct 2012, 19:55 pm
@I am a stormer-31: Start praying today sommer.
26 Oct 2012, 19:56 pm
@Robzim-32: All part of the inexperience.
26 Oct 2012, 19:59 pm
@Dusky-34:
Its the scrumhalf Falie Oelschigh (another dodgy name).
He appeared to have thrown a a punch in the general direction of a Cheetah connecting Ebersohn in the face and drawing blood.Joebert wanted to go for yellow but Meuwensen recommended red so off he went.
26 Oct 2012, 20:00 pm
@Robzim-35: Its a punch that connected. It should have been red. Of course, I cant find a stream so I am talking without seeing what is actually going on.
26 Oct 2012, 20:01 pm
@Robzim-35: Oelschig – a Currie Cup w h o r e.
Has played for almost every Currie Cup team.
26 Oct 2012, 20:03 pm
The Cheetahs seem to be unable to handle a ball today !? Something is fishy with this. Jirre I tell you when South Africans cook up a pot, its so clear. At least if they are going to do something like this – try and keep it a mystery.
26 Oct 2012, 20:04 pm
EP still in the 2nd division then.
Good.
Is the whitehead chap related to Tim by any chance?
Titans up against it in the cricket
26 Oct 2012, 20:06 pm
@stormersboy-39: I think they are related.
26 Oct 2012, 20:06 pm
F@ck1ng spur changed the channel
26 Oct 2012, 20:06 pm
@Dusky-36:
Sure, but it took very good camera-work to “find” the punch- and Oelschig “acted” very innocently- probably deserves a red though.
26 Oct 2012, 20:07 pm
@Dusky-40: Tims from PE so that makes sense.
26 Oct 2012, 20:08 pm
@ST1-41: Let me guess….to eeee iiiii diski ?
26 Oct 2012, 20:08 pm
@Dusky-38:
Naw, its the aggressive tackling that put them off- that Boetie bloke is one dangerous customer, nearly bent Marcel vd Merwe’s knee backwards.
26 Oct 2012, 20:09 pm
@Dusky-36: Try

26 Oct 2012, 20:10 pm
@stormersboy-43: Another set of brothers. At one stage the Sharks looked like they could have the Cronjes, Du Plessis, Ebersohns, Ndunganes……
They like brother combos. Maybe George will still get a chance to play for a real rugby team.
26 Oct 2012, 20:11 pm
@Dusky-47: Yeah you should buy the Rose’s too.
26 Oct 2012, 20:11 pm
Trust Craig Joubert, his appointment’s not a coincident!
For selecting Raubenheimer alone the Cheetahs should be relegated
26 Oct 2012, 20:12 pm
@stormersboy-48: Apparently there is a younger Jantjes as well playing for the Bulls.
Nah – you guys can have the Roses thanks
26 Oct 2012, 20:12 pm
@Baylion-46: Dude – how do you guys find these streams. When I tried vipbox earlier the stream didn’t work. WTF ?
Thanks by the way.
26 Oct 2012, 20:14 pm
Jissus….why did Killian go play for the Kings ? Did he intend to take a step backwards in his career ? Did he decide he was doing too well ?
26 Oct 2012, 20:16 pm
@Dusky-50: Ja we’ll the good one (jantjies that is)
The kings can have earl the pearl.
Go to VIP Box and download their app. you then open the app and get your selection. I watch most of my sport on there to be honest. Seldom have issues. I also watch US TV too, fox movies, discovery channel, the works.
Switched DSTV off months ago. Fuckem.
26 Oct 2012, 20:17 pm
@Dusky-52: He’s their Marquee signing boet.
26 Oct 2012, 20:18 pm
@stormersboy-53: Are you in the US ?
26 Oct 2012, 20:19 pm
@stormersboy-53: Oh sorry – scratch that stupid question. Ja, DSTV are a bunch of Sharks but then any TV service provider actually is. All trying to milk it for all its worth.
26 Oct 2012, 20:20 pm
@Dusky-55: I’m in the Republic of the Western Cape.
26 Oct 2012, 20:20 pm
Flippin Kings are playing well. I can’t deny…
26 Oct 2012, 20:21 pm
@stormersboy-57: Kings had a bit of a premature there…..moment got too big for them.
26 Oct 2012, 20:22 pm
@Dusky-59: Went off half cocked yes.
26 Oct 2012, 20:26 pm
Gavin Rich was in a Q&A on Supersport website. He says that he is confused because he thought that the Kings was about having Blacks in the team. What a numbnut. Mr Rich its all about building a winning environment. That will attract better talent AND enable the region to retain their talent. What a doos…. and he calls himself a journalist.
26 Oct 2012, 20:28 pm
@XV-61: I think he was being Ironic there boet.
26 Oct 2012, 20:29 pm
@stormersboy-62: mmm….I understand irony….and not in my opinion. Did you read the interview?
26 Oct 2012, 20:33 pm
@XV-63: No I haven’t to be honest. Rich is very experienced as a journo though so I’d be surprised if he was really asking a question looking for an answer, but rather making a point by doing so.
But I haven’t read it so i cannot say for sure.
26 Oct 2012, 20:37 pm
@stormersboy-64: anyway its quite tiresome of all the negative comments about the Kings on SA websites. For what it is worth I think SA should have 6 Super teams. Its a travesty that the Lions are nomads next season.
Why the hell should Australia have the same number as ourselves? Poor administration / negotiation lead us to the current situation. Hopefully Jurie Roux will sort this all out at the next round of negotiations when SANZAR negotiate a new deal.
26 Oct 2012, 20:37 pm
Klap hulle, Konings!
26 Oct 2012, 20:39 pm
GO KINGS!!!
26 Oct 2012, 20:40 pm
@XV-65: There’s no doubt that the SARU guys stuffed this up.
I also think that if you were going to give it to the Kings then they shouldn’t have just gone for 1 year. That’s ridiculous.
However I’m not of the opinion that we should have 6 teams, I think we dhould have 3, 4 tops.
Not permanent franchises either, but rather a tournament that you qualify for each year (based on CC performance perhaps).
26 Oct 2012, 20:40 pm
See you in Port St. John’s on my way back from the vistory in Durbs!
26 Oct 2012, 20:42 pm
@stormersboy-68: or more teams and a Heineken Cup type tournament?
26 Oct 2012, 20:45 pm
@Transformation-67: Ag just as you joined with your alterior ego personality, Keurboom – the Kings took a backward step. Go back off here and maybe they can still win.
26 Oct 2012, 20:46 pm
@XV-70: I’d have expanded the CC to 8 teams, and then had a qualification for, as I say, 3 or 4 teams at the end. The competition must run consecutively not concurrently, with the qualifyers playing the following year in the Super comp.
26 Oct 2012, 20:46 pm
watch pienaar!

26 Oct 2012, 20:49 pm
Watch Cheeky claim that this Currie Cup promotion/relegation game is indicative that the Kings will be competitive in Super rugby. Wait for it….
26 Oct 2012, 20:49 pm
@gonzo-73: Incredible watching him play for Ulster. Maybe the competition isn’t as good as in SH but he’s had a few good games. He just made a break, chip over the top, collects from opposition fumble and goes over for the try.
26 Oct 2012, 20:49 pm
@stormersboy-72: a possibility but players negotiate contracts based on playing at a certain level etc. So in reality I cannot see it working. Look how the Kings are struggling to contract players now.
26 Oct 2012, 20:50 pm
@stormersboy-74: I hear Ruan Pienaar might be coming back to the Sharks. Maybe as early as next Super 15. Sharks should be able to field a pretty decent side next year.
26 Oct 2012, 20:50 pm
@Dusky-75:
I think you Cheeky
But I likes you a lot
26 Oct 2012, 20:50 pm
@gonzo-76: Yes he excels at the heavier fields up north. The game is a yard slower which fits him like a glove.
26 Oct 2012, 20:52 pm
15 – Ludick, 14 – Pietersen, 13 – Jordaan, 12 – Steyn, 11 – Mvovo, 10 – Lambie, 9 – Pienaar, 8 – Alberts, 7 – Coetzee, 6 – Daniel, 5 – Bresler, 4 – Steph Du Toit, 3 – Du Plessis, 2 – Du Plessis, 1 – Beast.
Would be pretty decent that…..
26 Oct 2012, 20:54 pm
@XV-77: Ah but that’s the beauty of it, no one is guaranteed a Super game. They play based on the CC. Also, if they miss a season there’s every chance they will get a crack the next year.
It’s much easier to sell a Kings type scenario over a 5 year plan in the A section of the CC this way, a slow build up of talent to where they are fighting for a top 4 spot regularly,
If they haddone this in 2006 there would have been ample time to put that sort of plan in place for the kings, where they could have been competing very legitimately for a spot on talent alone, rather than doing it under a cloud they way it’s happened now.
26 Oct 2012, 20:54 pm
EP not close to being good enough to play Currie Cup rugby but good enough to play Super Rugby??????????????????????
26 Oct 2012, 20:54 pm
@Dusky-78: Really? Pity for Reinach who is coming on nicely.
26 Oct 2012, 20:55 pm
@stormersboy-68:
We all know that there is an extreme difference between Super Rugby franchises and Provincial rugby in SA.
If and I say if SARU have an excellent no bullsh1t negotiator at the time of the new sponsorship agreement at the end of 2015, then things could change in Super rugby.
The ARU wanted a 5th team in Australia to fulfill their needs for a domestic competition. For their own greed. And got it.
SARU need a 6th team in Super Rugby for domestic, geographical, political tendencies. Will we get it?
The important question is.
Will Newscorp buy it?
I wouldn’t.
26 Oct 2012, 20:55 pm
Kings pretty much as potent as the Eastern Cape education department…eish!!
26 Oct 2012, 20:55 pm
@stormersboy-80: Pienaar has grown and matured a lot as a player. The only thing I didn’t like about Pienaar was the petulance when he left. Same as Frans Steyn. I am glad to see that this could be worked out at least with Francois so far. Pienaar would be a huge signing for anyone right now.
26 Oct 2012, 20:57 pm
@stormersboy-84: Lots of place for Reinach. If he hangs around, he will always be in the mix. If he wants to be top choice he would need to evaluate his options elsewhere. I think Charl McLeod is on his way out from the Sharks. I just get that feeling.
26 Oct 2012, 20:57 pm
@Braders-83: They will have a slightly different team to be honest. But they will also be playing against slightly different opposition. This Cheetahs team is no indicator of what to expect in Super rugby.
If they believe that for one second – they are already in big trouble.
26 Oct 2012, 20:58 pm
@I am a stormer-85: Sure, there are many barriers to putting this in place now, but they were not in 2004/5, or at least not as many. The seperate franchise issue isn’t as much of an issue as people make out, in my opinion, because they are essentially the same thing, for the most part.
As for the Aussies, sure, we all know what their reasoning was, but we didn’t have to buy what they were selling, as you say.
26 Oct 2012, 20:58 pm
Lekka sien die Kings hulle gat
I hope they never win a game ever
26 Oct 2012, 20:59 pm
@JL1-91: I feel that way too. The Lions did screw themselves but I cant help but feel sorry for them. They are stuffed now – all their players leaving.
26 Oct 2012, 21:00 pm
Quality support from the home side…political mofos..the Entitlement theory comes to mind.
26 Oct 2012, 21:00 pm
Off to the Roman Lounge. Going to meet the Lesbians for Lambie
26 Oct 2012, 21:01 pm
@Diplomatic oeK-93: Ja – and these cnuts had a lot to say about attendance at Ellis Park for the semi-final. How many people were at the game today ? An indicator of things to come ?
26 Oct 2012, 21:01 pm
@KeurboomPark-94: Tell your mom I say hi.
26 Oct 2012, 21:02 pm
@Dusky-92: Kings will not get any recognition or support outside of the region.
One of the oldest rugby unions in the world without super rugby is a blame laid at the front door of SARU and the gravy train riders.
Cheeky Watson gaan ook sy gat sien, the in-fighting in PE will surface for the promised money
26 Oct 2012, 21:03 pm
@KeurboomPark-94: Go lick some carpet fella.

26 Oct 2012, 21:06 pm
@Diplomatic oeK-93: There is no support in PE for rugby, a couple of well known schools, no more than 7 and a few old well known rugby clubs. Nothing happening in Border-once with Gert Smal a tough team at home, now nothing, SWD–once with Ludeke and Meyer and OK team, now just rubbish. No money there and more theft from the unions than anywhere else
No sleeping rugby giant there in EP, NO WAY HOSÉ
26 Oct 2012, 21:09 pm
@Dusky-103: speak for yourself
26 Oct 2012, 21:09 pm
Kings to confirm our mediocre status in 2013. Die bol is nie rond nie korrelkop!!!
26 Oct 2012, 21:09 pm
My mom wants to meet HM. Help him soothe his piles.
26 Oct 2012, 21:12 pm
@stormersboy-90:
Super Rugby will be expanded. Of that we both have no doubt. Whether it is S15 or S16.
I am not in favour of the conference system. Never have been. It works for the Aussies and no-one else.
In a super 16 format, each team plays each other once, top 4 qualify, done and dusted. The tournament won’t then have to go on after the completion of the incoming tours. I reckon we could start the comp middle Feb with the final end May which will be in time for the incoming tours. The Rugby Championship starts earlier – well in the spot it used to accomodate.
And credence will be given back to the Currie Cup as players are available earlier.
The Aussies complicated things. It is now time to call the shots and get back to basics.
Message is for SARU. Let the Aussies look after themselves.
26 Oct 2012, 22:04 pm
Expected result, but hey the lions are out of Sr for 2yrs! You heard it here first folks…
26 Oct 2012, 22:11 pm
The Kings are dead.
26 Oct 2012, 23:04 pm
@katman-111:
Long live The Kings.
26 Oct 2012, 23:11 pm
The Kings aint dead, they are on life support.
26 Oct 2012, 23:55 pm
Even the master swindler Craig Joubert couldn’t get the Kings to win
And how he tried boy, he tried hard
27 Oct 2012, 00:08 am
The Kinks, as usual, played like a bunch of Lolas.
27 Oct 2012, 00:11 am
In one fell swoop, the Kings have learnt 2 things:
1) That there is a massive difference between First Div and Premier Div Currie Cup.
2) Actually, they didn’t learn anything else.
27 Oct 2012, 00:13 am
@TheTackler-115:
Did you ever see them live?
The Kinks, I mean. I bet you did.
27 Oct 2012, 01:16 am
@I am a stormer-117:
I’m not so sure. He is from Eksteenfontein.
They only knew about Jim Reeves. They never knew about Elvis even.
27 Oct 2012, 01:36 am
‘The Kings then suffered a major setback when scrumhalf Falie Oelschig was harshly red-carded for a punch on the half-hour mark, but they managed to go into the break with their lead intact.
Looking at the number of stitches that Ebersohn received It is hard to stomach a stupid comment like the one quoted above.The Kings were hell bent not to play rugby but through illegal amateurish tackling (no arms) to level the playing field.The Cheetahs paid dearly for their victory.
Graig Joubert saw it fit to ignore these tactics and the Assistant referee had to step in to to stop this stupid and dangerous foul play.The Kings can rest assured that many NZ and Aussie teams will not take this type of behaviour
laying down and the Kings may find themselves visiting the dentist for more than just a filling.
27 Oct 2012, 05:33 am
@Brentie1-119:
Looks like traditional EP/Border rugby is back.
27 Oct 2012, 07:27 am
Poor weather in PE reduced prospects of a free flowing points bonanza , like the game at the OFS statium last week . Also spoilt by a King with short man syndrome , being red carded . Overall , the pathetic political decision to put Cheeky’s team in Super Rugby is exposed as fatally flawed . But what would ANC politicians care – if the phuqed up upper thite , they will phuq up any thing.
You get the circumstances you vote for !
27 Oct 2012, 07:30 am
hate to agree with the australasians, but saffas can be thick. the kings are in superrugby to stay. how do you like them apples?
27 Oct 2012, 07:32 am
Brentie , it seems the Battle of Boet Erasmus lingers . Same meat , just different gravy . Those tackles last night showed mens rea and Solomons is a laywer and will know the meaning of mens rea (intentional and calculated to injure) If you are too young to remember the Battle of Boet – I am sure google has a record somewhere . I’m just surprised Grickers dont play that way – their coach was one of seeds from the “Battle of Boet” potting soil .
27 Oct 2012, 07:35 am
@shaka mehlomakulu-121:
as aposed to the circumstances we couldn’t vote for under apartheid
27 Oct 2012, 07:36 am
@shaka mehlomakulu-123:
Are you referring to the ’74 Lions tour and the 99 call? That was a test.
Look, EP had some of the dirtiest players in CC history during that period.
27 Oct 2012, 08:10 am
@David-125: Kyk hoe lyk ons nou and we voted for this, Ironic is it not.
27 Oct 2012, 11:59 am
How come transformation never posts on Kings threads?
27 Oct 2012, 12:23 pm
Because he knows he’ll come second…
27 Oct 2012, 16:10 pm
@Liewe Luiperd-127: He posted when they were leading. Maybe that’s the type of fan he is …
