Cheetahs stay with big boys

Cheetahs stay with big boys

SIMON BORCHARDT saw the Free State Cheetahs retain their Currie Cup Premier Division status with a 16-6 win against the EP Kings in Port Elizabeth.

Having won the first promotion-relegation match 53-14 in Bloemfontein, the Cheetahs just needed to avoid defeat by 40-plus points, or get a bonus point, to stay in the top flight.

EP were never going to climb their Mount Everest after Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske opted to field his strongest line-up and heavy rain began to fall early in the match. Still, the hosts produced a far better performance than last week and may have won had they not played 50 minutes of the match with 14 men.

The Kings had 60% possession in the opening 10 minutes, with flyhalf George Whitehead kicking two penalties for a 6-0 lead, and their scrum was dominant.

The Cheetahs were frustrated by the wet conditions, which hampered their expansive game, and their mood didn’t improve when flyhalf Sias Ebersohn missed two penalties.

The Kings then suffered a major setback when scrumhalf Falie Oelschig was harshly red-carded for a punch on the half-hour mark, but they managed to go into the break with their lead intact.

Both sides had try-scoring opportunities in the third quarter, but as had been the case throughout the match, poor handling let them down.

Replacement wing Nico Scheepers finally got the Cheetahs on the board with a penalty in the 61st minute, and that was followed soon after by a game-breaking try from Sias Ebersohn.

Scheepers’ touchline conversion came in off the left-hand upright and he added two late penalties to seal the win.

Jissus….why did Killian go play for the Kings ? Did he intend to take a step backwards in his career ? Did he decide he was doing too well ?

@Dusky-50: Ja we’ll the good one (jantjies that is)

Gavin Rich was in a Q&A on Supersport website. He says that he is confused because he thought that the Kings was about having Blacks in the team. What a numbnut. Mr Rich its all about building a winning environment. That will attract better talent AND enable the region to retain their talent. What a doos…. and he calls himself a journalist.

@XV-61: I think he was being Ironic there boet.

@stormersboy-62: mmm….I understand irony….and not in my opinion. Did you read the interview?

  • 64.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

@XV-63: No I haven’t to be honest. Rich is very experienced as a journo though so I’d be surprised if he was really asking a question looking for an answer, but rather making a point by doing so.

But I haven’t read it so i cannot say for sure.

@stormersboy-64: anyway its quite tiresome of all the negative comments about the Kings on SA websites. For what it is worth I think SA should have 6 Super teams. Its a travesty that the Lions are nomads next season.

Why the hell should Australia have the same number as ourselves? Poor administration / negotiation lead us to the current situation. Hopefully Jurie Roux will sort this all out at the next round of negotiations when SANZAR negotiate a new deal.

    GO KINGS!!!

  • 68.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

@XV-65: There’s no doubt that the SARU guys stuffed this up.

I also think that if you were going to give it to the Kings then they shouldn’t have just gone for 1 year. That’s ridiculous.

However I’m not of the opinion that we should have 6 teams, I think we dhould have 3, 4 tops.

Not permanent franchises either, but rather a tournament that you qualify for each year (based on CC performance perhaps).

See you in Port St. John’s on my way back from the vistory in Durbs!

  • 70.XV: Reply to this comment

@stormersboy-68: or more teams and a Heineken Cup type tournament?

  • 71.Dusky: Reply to this comment

@Transformation-67: Ag just as you joined with your alterior ego personality, Keurboom – the Kings took a backward step. Go back off here and maybe they can still win.

  • 72.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

@XV-70: I’d have expanded the CC to 8 teams, and then had a qualification for, as I say, 3 or 4 teams at the end. The competition must run consecutively not concurrently, with the qualifyers playing the following year in the Super comp.

Watch Cheeky claim that this Currie Cup promotion/relegation game is indicative that the Kings will be competitive in Super rugby. Wait for it….

  • 76.gonzo: Reply to this comment

@gonzo-73: Incredible watching him play for Ulster. Maybe the competition isn’t as good as in SH but he’s had a few good games. He just made a break, chip over the top, collects from opposition fumble and goes over for the try.

  • 77.XV: Reply to this comment

@stormersboy-72: a possibility but players negotiate contracts based on playing at a certain level etc. So in reality I cannot see it working. Look how the Kings are struggling to contract players now.

  • 78.Dusky: Reply to this comment

@stormersboy-74: I hear Ruan Pienaar might be coming back to the Sharks. Maybe as early as next Super 15. Sharks should be able to field a pretty decent side next year.

@gonzo-76: Yes he excels at the heavier fields up north. The game is a yard slower which fits him like a glove.

  • 81.Dusky: Reply to this comment

    15 – Ludick, 14 – Pietersen, 13 – Jordaan, 12 – Steyn, 11 – Mvovo, 10 – Lambie, 9 – Pienaar, 8 – Alberts, 7 – Coetzee, 6 – Daniel, 5 – Bresler, 4 – Steph Du Toit, 3 – Du Plessis, 2 – Du Plessis, 1 – Beast.

    Would be pretty decent that…..

  • 82.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

@XV-77: Ah but that’s the beauty of it, no one is guaranteed a Super game. They play based on the CC. Also, if they miss a season there’s every chance they will get a crack the next year.

It’s much easier to sell a Kings type scenario over a 5 year plan in the A section of the CC this way, a slow build up of talent to where they are fighting for a top 4 spot regularly,

If they haddone this in 2006 there would have been ample time to put that sort of plan in place for the kings, where they could have been competing very legitimately for a spot on talent alone, rather than doing it under a cloud they way it’s happened now.

EP not close to being good enough to play Currie Cup rugby but good enough to play Super Rugby??????????????????????

  • 84.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

  • 85.I am a stormer: Reply to this comment

    @stormersboy-68:

We all know that there is an extreme difference between Super Rugby franchises and Provincial rugby in SA.

If and I say if SARU have an excellent no bullsh1t negotiator at the time of the new sponsorship agreement at the end of 2015, then things could change in Super rugby.

The ARU wanted a 5th team in Australia to fulfill their needs for a domestic competition. For their own greed. And got it.

SARU need a 6th team in Super Rugby for domestic, geographical, political tendencies. Will we get it?

    The important question is.

    Will Newscorp buy it?

    I wouldn’t.

Kings pretty much as potent as the Eastern Cape education department…eish!!

  • 87.Dusky: Reply to this comment

@stormersboy-80: Pienaar has grown and matured a lot as a player. The only thing I didn’t like about Pienaar was the petulance when he left. Same as Frans Steyn. I am glad to see that this could be worked out at least with Francois so far. Pienaar would be a huge signing for anyone right now.

  • 88.Dusky: Reply to this comment

@stormersboy-84: Lots of place for Reinach. If he hangs around, he will always be in the mix. If he wants to be top choice he would need to evaluate his options elsewhere. I think Charl McLeod is on his way out from the Sharks. I just get that feeling.

  • 89.Dusky: Reply to this comment

@Braders-83: They will have a slightly different team to be honest. But they will also be playing against slightly different opposition. This Cheetahs team is no indicator of what to expect in Super rugby.

If they believe that for one second – they are already in big trouble.

  • 90.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

@I am a stormer-85: Sure, there are many barriers to putting this in place now, but they were not in 2004/5, or at least not as many. The seperate franchise issue isn’t as much of an issue as people make out, in my opinion, because they are essentially the same thing, for the most part.

As for the Aussies, sure, we all know what their reasoning was, but we didn’t have to buy what they were selling, as you say.
