Poor turnout at Kings Park

Poor turnout at Kings Park

Expensive ticket prices have prevented this year’s Currie Cup final from being a sell-out.

The crowd attendance at Kings Park on Saturday will be remembered as one of the worst turnouts for a Currie Cup final.

This is mainly because of the expensive match-day tickets, which were sold for R350 each. Poor sales during the week forced the Sharks to open their ticket offices on Saturday morning.

Poor weather in Durban has been a factor too, but Saturday has offered drier conditions.

Last year’s final at Ellis Park was a near sell-out, while Kings Park had a 52-000 strong crowd for the 2010 showdown.

While the Sharks will argue that this season’s Currie Cup ticket prices were the same as 2010, there needs to be a realisation that the extended Super Rugby schedule, which includes two rounds of South African derbies, has had a negative impact on the domestic tournament.

There’s been poor crowd attendances throughout the Currie Cup, which is a clear sign that the marketing departments of each union needs to rethink their strategies. R350 a ticket is too expensive – it’s a sad sight not to see a sold-out crowd for a Currie Cup final.

The Sharks fans have outnumbered the Province supporters (as expected). But I’m surprised by how much support WP have in Durban.

Fellow reporter Rafieq Wagiet arrived from Cape Town on Saturday morning, and he told me that his flight had plenty of Province supporters on board. Throughout the U19 final and during the post-match ceremony, the ‘Proooovince’ and ‘WP jou lekker ding’ screams could be heard.

Meanwhile, there is heavy cloud cover over the east coast, but no rain has fallen since Friday night. There are no hectic winds, but a slight breeze. It’s been reported that there is a 40% chance of rain.

There is a cold front too, so if you’re coming out to the stadium, be sure to dress warmly.

“However, you can expect them to be outnumbered by Sharks fans by the 5pm kick-off.”

Brian van Zyl should use common sense, the prices are too high, the seating space awful, parking pitiful and long queus at half time make ‘Kings Park’ unbearable. Time to move across the road to the new stadium and turn the present stadium into a parking garage.
