Kaizer Chiefs enter sevens stage

Kaizer Chiefs have entered a team for the inaugural Sevens Premier League to be played in George in December.

The PSL club made the official announcement on Monday afternoon, confirming that former Springbok wing Breyton Paulse and centre Gcobani Bobo will be involved. Paulse will captain the team, while Bobo will stand in as coach.

Other players who will join the Chiefs rugby team are Fabian Juries, Stefan Basson, Mzwandile Stick and Brent Russell.

‘This is the coming together of two big brands, a cross cover of two sporting worlds and we at Kaizer Chiefs are very excited about it,’ said Kaizer Chiefs marketing manager Jessica Motaung. ‘We like to be part of sports history as a brand and we felt the association with the rugby sevens is a historical milestone in football, rugby and sports as a whole.

‘Amakhosi will have the might of our supporters behind us and I am confident that Gcobani and Breyton will do a great job.’

Bobo added: ‘In my early days in sport, I wanted nothing more than to play for Kaizer Chiefs, become a legend and then move to Real Madrid. It did not work out quite that way as I became a rugby player, but this opportunity to be associated with Kaizer Chiefs is one I cannot miss again. It will be a massive honour and privilege to coach their team. Breyton has vast experience as a player and to tap into that knowledge will be a massive boost to the rest of the team.’

All six South African Super Rugby franchises will also enter a sevens side. Kazier Chiefs will be one of six privately owned teams. The tournament will run from 14-15 December.

International stars Quade Cooper and Shane Williams are also expected to feature. The winners of the tournament will win R1 million.

@Skeppie-15: Breytie is golfing and cycling up a storm these days :) It seems he isn’t sure what pants to wear out in public anymore. Golf pants or cycling pants? So he does a combo move.

I’ve always digged the fella, very unique.

breyton generally has bad style, the kak suits he has worn at the J&B Met are cringeworthy…

Old Breytie is 36 – will be 37 in April. That’s older than Matfield.

Maybe they can reunite him with Slaptjips for this occasion?

This is Brilliant. I wonder if some of the other PSL clubs will follow suit. What better way to bring rugby to the masses and sevens is the way to do it. I think Breytie will only cover for this one tournament and then maybe become manager.

    Hang on….

Shouldn’t it be Breyton coach and Bobo captain…..?

When last did Breyton touch a rugby ball?

Great idea, good luck to them.
