Stormers celebrate Bok boost

Stormers celebrate Bok boost

Allister Coetzee says he’s excited to have on-loan Springbok and Lions duo Elton Jantjies and Jaco Taute in his Stormers squad next year.

Taute confirmed his move to keo.co.za last Wednesday, while WPRU president Thelo Wakefield also told this site that he approved Jantjies’ deal late last week.

Coetzee believes the two players will make telling contributions next season.

‘We’re very excited about having Elton and Jaco in Cape Town for next year’s Super Rugby tournament,’ said Coetzee. ‘They’re both quality players and we look forward to getting them involved here – both on and off the field – and seeing how they fit into the Stormers culture.’

Jantjies is expected to get a run in the starting line-up during the opening rounds of Super Rugby, considering the departure of WP’s Currie Cup-winning flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis to the Southern Kings and the late arrival of Peter Grant from Japan in February.

While Taute is able to play at centre and fullback, he’s likely to compete for the No 15 jersey as the Stormers already have Jean de Villiers, Juan de Jongh, Marcel Brache and JP du Plessis in their midfield department. Damian de Allende is also considered to be in the mix after his impressive performance at inside centre in the Currie Cup final.

Taute has the option of extending his stay in Cape Town after the Super Rugby season as his contract with the Lions expires next year.

The Stormers have also signed utility forward Michael Rhodes (who can play lock or flank) and Springbok versatile prop Pat Cilliers from the Lions on permanent deals.

Hope Taute gets plenty of gametime at fullback – its definitely his best position.

  • 2.Braders: Reply to this comment

Now the Stormers just need some decent depth in key positions ie tight five.

Very good moves for the Stormers.

Oh well… another WP / Stormers thread :( What more is there to say and brag about? I suppose later today there will be something about Coetzee bumping his toe in the shower this morning, but the joy of winning the CC will ensure that he makes it through the day…

@Finfan-4: Fair enough, should we move on to b!tching about Morne being includd in the EOYT squad? ;-)

  • 6.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

@Braders-2: Tight 5 is actually great, we at props:

    Brok and Malherbe at TH
Liebenberg, Fourie and Scarra at Hooker
Kitshoff, Pat and Carstens at LH (and some at TH cover too)

    Locks:

    Eben, Elstadt, Rhodes, Bekker, Steenkamp

    Loose forwards:

Burger, Vermeulen, Elstadt, Kolisi, Carr, Armand, Rhodes, Fourie

I’ve mentioned some players more than once due to their versatility, which is even better.

I’ve probably left some players out but the ones above all have top level experience, not youngsters with promise coming through.

For me the key is going to be who they select at 9 & 10 which to a large extent determines the game plan. Duvenhage and grant would be the worst scenario for me, Groom and Jantjies the best.

Injuries will happen, we saw that this year, so the depth of squad is very encouraging.

And, after Saturdays hard hitting performance against the sharks, led by the forwards, the words “light 5″ do not belong in the same context as WP.

  • 7.Blokkies: Reply to this comment

    @stormersboy-6: Agree re 9 and 10.

Groom should develop his game and work hard on getting his pass as snappy as possible, our backline looks much better with him there than Duvenhage. I am not convinced on Schreuder (sp?) either.

Hope Elton settles early and keeps Grant on the bench who is a handy sub to cover 10 and 12.

  • 12.Sasuke: Reply to this comment

@stormersboy-6: Agree with 100% except the selection of Groom. I have not been impressed by him. He got caught a few times behind the ruck and his kicking was poor. I will rather play Schreuder there. AC will go with Dewaldt though, in that case i will have Schreuder on the bench instead of Groom.

Interesting census results. For the first time coloureds outnumber whites in SA.

“Cape Town – Almost eight in every 10 people in South Africa are black, according to the 2011 Census results, released on Tuesday.

About 41 million people described themselves as black; 4.62 million as coloured; 4.59 million as white; and 1.3 million as Indian or Asian, during the October 9 count last year.

In the previous census, in 2001, there were 35.4 million black people, 3.99 million coloureds, 1.1 million Indians or Asians, and 4.29 million whites.

For the first time in post-1994 census history, the number of people identifying themselves as coloured exceeds those describing themselves as white.”

The Sharks Academy has entered into a joint venture with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Rugby Union to operate three High Performance Academy programmes in the UAE commencing January 2013.

UAE Rugby and the Sharks will operate at three venues, namely Al Ain, Abu Dhabu and Dubai where permanent Sharks staff will help produce the same talent that has come through the Sharks Academy in Durban, with 54 Senior Sharks players and 20 Springboks already through the system.

It is reported that UAE Rugby approached the Sharks as they are seen as world leaders in the field of developing players for professional rugby, and the Academy will be the first of its kind in Asia

******** Falaknaz, Chairman of UAERF commented “We are truly delighted to team up with The Sharks in this first Academy of its type in Asia. Ackermann’s job advertised
    Published: Tuesday, 30. October, 2012

Johan Ackermann was expected to be a shoe-in to replace John Mitchell as Lions head coach, but he may have some competition.

the Golden Lions Rugby Union will start advertising the position of head coach on Wednesday.

It comes in the same week that the GLRU hope to wrap up the unpleasant coaching saga involving the former All Black coach, Mitchell.

New Zealanders John Mitchell (head coach), Carlos Spencer (backs/attack coach) and Wayne Taylor (conditioning coach), who were roped in by the GLRU midway through 2010, were all shown the door earlier this year.

Mitchell has been involved in a protracted arbitration dispute with the GLRU since the fall-out, after complaints from senior players and the GLRU management.

So indicative of the stab-in-the-back attitude prevalent in South African rugby & politics.

Burger is only scheduled to return in the 3rd-odd week of SR I believe, and if AC has any common sense he’ll play him off the bench initially to ease him back, so if guys like Kolisi and Elstadt really make an impression it will give him quite a conundrum.

Eben and Bryan don’t need that award….but the guppie leader and his groupies REALLY DO.

The Currie Cup took a dip last year because all the bok players only arrived during the Semis, this year the boks cam back a bit earlier, making the final rounds more realistic and acurate towards the real order of things.

Thus the reason the Lions lost all games as soon as the boks came back.

The final was epic, the WP won and the Sharks lost. Deal with it pawnscum.

I really feel sorry for the genuinely excited little boys and girls who turned up with their hand made posters because they were outnumbered 3 to 1 by an assortment of homeless transvestites from the local shelter, Congolese parking attendants and the entire collection of St Georges Mall loonies.

So they had to bin roughly 600 000 carbon copies of tickets issued in Cape Town since February. Robin Carlisle has apparently called a brainstorm to find ways of making up the shortfall.

Slowly ever so slowly 4pm approaches and i am so bored as I totally missed the announcement of (and missed) the completely unexpected happy parade in Adderley Street. Allow me to speed up the minutes by poking some fun at deceptive, deceitful trick-and-treaters to a cup, all be it a day early.

How fitting, on the week-end that gives way to Halloween that a mostly spookie, druid-like, pinkiepig team actually wins that HOLLOWEE Cup (not even HOLLOWOOD could script it any better).
Yes you read it correctly, it is now a HOLLOWEE Cup for it is as empty and small and even piss-like as that VOIDandCUMinCup played early season.
In short, it is mostly worthless(and local) for without global competitors we have no benchmark measure.

    @BrumbiesBoy-179: poachers?

    Oosthuizen has Wallaby goals
    Published: Monday, 29. October, 2012

New Brumbies recruit Etienne Oosthuizen has made no secret of his ambitions to represent Australia in the Test arena.

Sharks in UAE moveThe 19-year-old utility forward, who was signed from the Lions recently, joined his Brumbies teammates in Canberra on Monday.

The giant South African, at 120kg and 198cm, played for the Lions this year before accepting an offer from former Springbok coach Jake White to further his career in Australia.

“The Brumbies have presented me with a fantastic opportunity,” said Oosthuizen, who only turns 20 in December.

“Having grown up in South Africa, the move to Canberra was a big step for me but one I felt I was ready to make,” he added.

“My goals are to become a regular Brumby and then further down the track, to represent the Wallabies.

“This is a long-term move to Australia for me so naturally I’m very excited.”

The Brumbies kick-started their 2013 Super Rugby season with testing on Monday.

The entire squad assembled, with explosive testing and a beep test showing the boys to be in good physical condition for the coming season.

Robbie Coleman produced some of the most encouraging results for the backs while Scott Fardy and Leon Power worked hard to represent the tight forwards.

Wallabies Ben Alexander, Stephen Moore and David Pocock were also on hand, with Monday’s testing the last chance for the Brumbies to assess their condition before the European year-end tour.

Head coach Jake White said he was pleased with where the squad was positioned at this stage of the season.

“The players were given their own programs to work through while they were away and it’s encouraging to see them come back in good condition,” White said.

“This time last year we were probably a bit behind the eight ball in terms of our fitness and getting to know each other. There aren’t nearly as many new faces here and the guys we have recruited are in good shape physically and mentally.

“Pre-season is always an encouraging time of year. We see players working their hardest to catch the coaches’ eyes and hopefully secure themselves a spot in the starting side.”

The Brumbies pre-season will run fulltime until December 22, when the group breaks for Christmas.

I do enjoy the SR but. Yes the quality and the intensity of CC raggas is not the same as SR but I dont care. I don’t think the SR will be around in another 20 years from now.

Even the Rugby champion ship, don’t like it. I would prefer proper rugby tours. Before I get hammered….I know its all about the MONEY!!

How relevant is any one to the situation when he/she cannot even name any or all the teams that lay claim to the blue and white hooped rugby jersey just in the Western Cape?

    @Transformation-265:

the thing about a handoff is its not really about the size or strength of either the (attempting) tackler or the ball carrier/runner. its really about timing it just right in order to catch the tackler somewhere inbetween him attempting to make the tackle and having commited to an exact and specific action in how he intends tackling the ball carrier.
once he’s commited to the decided tackle action its so difficult to change movement and compensate for the momemt at which the ball carrier (having calculated the right moment for effecting the handoff) carries through with it and palms/hits off the tackler in that sweet spot.

a great handoff is a bit of an extra momentum generator perhaps even for the carrier and of course a momentum degenerator/staller for the tackler.

of course its especially fun to see it done by a small carrier against a big tackler i suppose

But just to show you that I Harbor no ill will through your ignorance here’s a joke to lighten things up a bit:

After Paul had started dating Heather Mills his friends soon noticed that it was getting serious, so one of them asked him: “So Paul, when are you going to go down on one knee??”

Paul looked at his mate and said “she doesn’t like to be called that you know”

I see a bunch of fools have stupidly made light of a serious situation that has horribly affected in access of 100m people. and has already left more than 50 dead in its path of destruction. But then that is what to expect from morons.

I smartly left Philly mid-morning Monday driving south on the I-95 to WPB as an emergency College message indicated the university would be closed for business until at least Thurs. and power had already just been disrupted less than an hour before I left home.
I have now been in WPB for about 4 hrs. after a heavy drive in winds gusting up to 70miles per hour and over-nighting in Savannah, Georgia.
I believe I was last on this site last Monday (more than a week ago) posting almost solely about the Armstrong scandal.
Now I read that I have been posting today(before now) when I know all that time I have been on the 95(800 miles plus) for very many hrs.passing places like Jacksonville, Daytona, Orlando (further to the west of the 95), Melbourne, Vero Beach, Steward, Jupiter and many more. .
I have not even seen the merely local CC as I was preparing to withstand the then Hurricane Sandy, yet I read that I passed comment on that unimportant game.
Where do you imbeciles get these ‘facts’. Are you all into fanciful ‘drol’ sucking to desperately get something to seemingly stick? Be aware there are many bacteria ,viruses, fungi and more microbes that will threaten your health.
I am essentially not on this site, barring about three separate days posting since Feb. already, and barely posted recently on my long predicted trouble for Lancy Army. Live with my absence for your rugby and its distasteful neo-racist situation is stunningly boring and worthless
Deal with the people who mock you ever so correctly i might add but they are not me and they are not in Penna.

BTW phone any of Temple, U.Penn., Einstein, Villanova, Drexel or more institutions to verify they are not in business(it is only just 4pm. her and the area code is 215 for Philly area).

Sad when you consider the main culprits to be these pseudo professional whose incapable/incompetent application of their chosen trade leaves much to be desired. Any job plied in the presence of a public audience deserves not to be compromised by elementary mistakes and despairingly lackadaisical performances.

And this is what’s come to, calling each other not your names and beefing meanwhile Burden, Plumtree and co. make off with fat match fees after making their slightly above mediocre but pap none the less opponents do the same with even bigger cheques in hand.

You desperately make the doggypoo sucked assumption that I am an ANC adherent or voter or hanger-on whereas I know they are the continueing problem for the poor S.African worker(your using emotive labels does not bother me one little iota)
Bring your ‘domestic helper’ to Somerset West or Gordon’s Bay and I will educate her wrt how she and millions of fellow poor workers can solve their problems without putting all their trust in the ANC elite that control the trade unions.
Your ’75 & ” 7th tier ” references reveal how dumb and out of touch you are of your Neanderthal govt’s pathetic history of oppression that you now applaud. The denial of passports to the only true world recognised and invited non-racial sportpersons occurred in the mid ’80s and for you to repetitively celebrate and applaud such globally reviled actions by your voted reps. shows just where you are wrt racist sports. You can never ever be truly a worshipper of the principle of global non-racialism.

Let us know too how many times you could claim to poke your finger in the eye of your security specialists with vile names like Spyker Van Wyk, Bosduif ‘Bossie’ Bosman, Klipdrif Vermeulen, Dronkie Dankers and such like ? Many blacks can do so but what about you who once claimed to have fought apartheid?

I ask for the last time whose ‘liberal’ daughter would you like to be for that is the only claim to human respectability you will ever have.
Lastly, smartarse, just please pay your ‘domestic helper’(euphemism for servant, slave ) a simple living wage and not a slave wage so that Sipho can adequately perform at school.
