Stormers celebrate Bok boost

Stormers celebrate Bok boost

Allister Coetzee says he’s excited to have on-loan Springbok and Lions duo Elton Jantjies and Jaco Taute in his Stormers squad next year.

Taute confirmed his move to keo.co.za last Wednesday, while WPRU president Thelo Wakefield also told this site that he approved Jantjies’ deal late last week.

Coetzee believes the two players will make telling contributions next season.

‘We’re very excited about having Elton and Jaco in Cape Town for next year’s Super Rugby tournament,’ said Coetzee. ‘They’re both quality players and we look forward to getting them involved here – both on and off the field – and seeing how they fit into the Stormers culture.’

Jantjies is expected to get a run in the starting line-up during the opening rounds of Super Rugby, considering the departure of WP’s Currie Cup-winning flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis to the Southern Kings and the late arrival of Peter Grant from Japan in February.

While Taute is able to play at centre and fullback, he’s likely to compete for the No 15 jersey as the Stormers already have Jean de Villiers, Juan de Jongh, Marcel Brache and JP du Plessis in their midfield department. Damian de Allende is also considered to be in the mix after his impressive performance at inside centre in the Currie Cup final.

Taute has the option of extending his stay in Cape Town after the Super Rugby season as his contract with the Lions expires next year.

The Stormers have also signed utility forward Michael Rhodes (who can play lock or flank) and Springbok versatile prop Pat Cilliers from the Lions on permanent deals.

Hope Taute gets plenty of gametime at fullback – its definitely his best position.

  • 2.Braders: Reply to this comment

Now the Stormers just need some decent depth in key positions ie tight five.

  • 3.BULLET: Reply to this comment

Very good moves for the Stormers.

Oh well… another WP / Stormers thread :( What more is there to say and brag about? I suppose later today there will be something about Coetzee bumping his toe in the shower this morning, but the joy of winning the CC will ensure that he makes it through the day…

@Finfan-4: Fair enough, should we move on to b!tching about Morne being includd in the EOYT squad? ;-)

  • 6.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

@Braders-2: Tight 5 is actually great, we at props:

    Brok and Malherbe at TH
Liebenberg, Fourie and Scarra at Hooker
Kitshoff, Pat and Carstens at LH (and some at TH cover too)

    Locks:

    Eben, Elstadt, Rhodes, Bekker, Steenkamp

    Loose forwards:

Burger, Vermeulen, Elstadt, Kolisi, Carr, Armand, Rhodes, Fourie

I’ve mentioned some players more than once due to their versatility, which is even better.

I’ve probably left some players out but the ones above all have top level experience, not youngsters with promise coming through.

For me the key is going to be who they select at 9 & 10 which to a large extent determines the game plan. Duvenhage and grant would be the worst scenario for me, Groom and Jantjies the best.

Injuries will happen, we saw that this year, so the depth of squad is very encouraging.

And, after Saturdays hard hitting performance against the sharks, led by the forwards, the words “light 5″ do not belong in the same context as WP.

    @stormersboy-6: Agree re 9 and 10.

Groom should develop his game and work hard on getting his pass as snappy as possible, our backline looks much better with him there than Duvenhage. I am not convinced on Schreuder (sp?) either.

Hope Elton settles early and keeps Grant on the bench who is a handy sub to cover 10 and 12.

wow much more excited ‘re cilliers than the other signings. somehow I missed that one

  • 9.goodstuff: Reply to this comment

    @stormersboy-6: Isn’t Armand leaving?

  • 10.Finfan: Reply to this comment

@sparticus-8: Next year, more than 75% of the Stormers team will be signings from other provinces. Exciting times indeed. “If you can’t beat them, recruit them.”

  • 11.goodstuff: Reply to this comment

@Finfan-10: Who can’t we beat exactly?
    Also, you still bitter bro?

  • 12.Sasuke: Reply to this comment

@stormersboy-6: Agree with 100% except the selection of Groom. I have not been impressed by him. He got caught a few times behind the ruck and his kicking was poor. I will rather play Schreuder there. AC will go with Dewaldt though, in that case i will have Schreuder on the bench instead of Groom.

WP Ticker tape parade today in Cape Town. Start 12:45.

Stormers pulling a “sharks” on themselves … about 80% of the team from other places in SA… then they moan about the Kings? wtf?

Sharks = Grey Bloem Old Boys

    @suffer_guy-14: Sorry what?

Of the team that beat the Sharks this weekend only the following players bought from other unions.

    Starting XV:
    Van der Heever, Vermeulen

    Subs:
    Carstens, Sinclair

I might be wrong, but 4 out of 22 is in no way 80%!

    Try again slick!

@SuperStirrer-15: Just highlights the support Stormers/ WP enjoy in the Mother City, not like Durban or Joburg where the stadiums aren’t even filled on the CC final.

    Enjoying the sour grapes?

@goodstuff-17: You are wrong, try again.

@goodstuff-18: Super trophy by all means, a very watered down Currie Cup reeks of desperation. Anyway if it manages to unite the good burghers of Cape Town then it will be a good thing.

  • 21.goodstuff: Reply to this comment

@SuperStirrer-19: Please correct me then, who else in the team has played Currie Cup at another union?

Okey the sour grapes starting to show now… I thought the humility wouldn’t last …

  • 26.goodstuff: Reply to this comment

@SuperStirrer-20: Desperate for what? Was the the CC final watered down? Seemed like all the fit bok players were present, only thing watered down was the WP team as they were missing 3 boks. But they still beat a sharks team laden with boks!

  • 27.wpallday: Reply to this comment

@suffer_guy-14: Why do you care where they went to school? Is it important what high school they went to? Or do you consider the university ,and junior school?

@goodstuff-17: To my knowledge ;Carstens ,Sinclair ,Habbana ,Vermulen, Van der Heever, Armand

  • 35.Finfan: Reply to this comment

@Gumboots-25: You WP fans, more than anyone else, should know what it feels like to lose. Some fans only experience this once or twice in a lifetime and we, unlike the WP fans, never had the opportunity to internalise the loser-status. Show some sympathy please. ;)

  • 41.Finfan: Reply to this comment

@stormersboy-30: With scrumhalves like Groom and Duvenhage, surely you’ll have to recruit someone with at least some Sharks experience?? ;)

  • 42.wpallday: Reply to this comment

  • 44.goodstuff: Reply to this comment

@Finfan-24: Lol, you are actually counting Louw and De Villiers as outside players? You are desperate, both those players came through WP ranks idiot. Grant came through Maties rugby (was only a nataler at high school level), where is Kocket even part of the Stormers plans? Rhodes won’t start.

    Real stormers starting lineup:

Taute (lions), Aplon (wp), De Jongh (wp), JDV (WP), Habana (bulls), Jantjies (Lions), DuVenhage (WP), Vermeulen (FS), Schalk (WP), Kollisi (WP), Bekker (WP), Ysterbeth (WP), Malherbe (WP), Liebenberg (Griquas), Kitshoff (WP)

    That’s 10/15 which is 60% WP.

    Bench:
    Cilliers (Lions)
    Fourie (WP)
    Elstadt (WP)
    Rhodes (Lions)
    Shreuder/ Groom (WP)
Grant (WP, never played ruggas a pro level for any other province in SA)
    J Peterson (WP)

    5/7 are WP 71%!

    Dilusional sour grapes!!!

So sad. Are you a lions supporter? Sorry about the card you have been dealt if that’s the case.

Time for work, see you guys at the parade.

  • 46.katman: Reply to this comment

@gunther-28: So disruptive. I’m going to suggest that they combine this ticker tape parade with the Klopse festival, a Cosatu protest and the G.ay Pride march and get them all over and done with. And just think of the bridges that will be built.

Habanna was a Lion, then Bull…the prince of teams…

  • 50.goodstuff: Reply to this comment

@suffer_guy-47: ‘Poaching’ players only counts if the player has played top flight rugby. At school level they are fair game. Where would Kolisi rather want to go to University? At Mandela Bay or UCT?

If you look at it like that then every SA team besides the cheetahs are merc teams.
Because who the hell wants to move to Bloem?
