Cooper lashed for outbursts

Quade Cooper received a hefty fine and a three-match ban following his disciplinary hearing with the ARU on Wednesday.

Cooper was fined A$60 000 (about R538 000) and suspended for three games for bringing the game into disrepute after criticising the Wallabies and head coach Robbie Deans.

It was decided that A$20 000 (about R179 000) of the fine and the ban would be suspended on the proviso that the player be of good behaviour for the next two years. This means Cooper will be available for selection once he recovers from his knee injury.

Cooper described the Wallabies environment as ‘toxic’ on social platform Twitter, where he has over 600 000 followers. He also criticised the Australian national team on a television programme a week later, saying he did not want to be involved with the Wallabies under the current regime because it was ‘destroying’ him as a player and a person.

‘It was a very fair hearing and I was very happy with the outcome,’ Cooper told reporters. ‘Obviously, the sentence that has been handed to me, I have full respect for that and I understand that I fell well below par in what it means to be a Wallaby … my apologies.

‘From now on, I’m just looking forward to the future – hopefully having a big year, with not only my state but the Wallabies.’

Why would any coach ever pick him for the Wallabies again?

Good luck with your future, i think you might need it.

Any parent who willingly names their kid Quade is complicit in the tacky, low-class mess he will ultimately end up in.

@gunther-4: Hehehe – he’ll fit in nicely there but unfortunately their “quota” of foreign players has already been reached!!!

But I’m sure Daddy Puke can make a plan, it’ll just take a phone call or two!

Swanepoel and Van Der Walt join the University of Canberra Brumbies

    By Brumbies Media Unit

Mark Swanepoel has joined the University of Canberra Brumbies.
The University of Canberra Brumbies 2013 playing roster is now full, with the announcement that Stephan Van Der Walt and Mark Swanepoel have occupied the final two EPS positions.

Van Der Walt arrives from Queensland where he has been playing with Queensland Country and the University of Queensland. A former Sunshine Coast boy who migrated to Australia with his family from South Africa at the age of 8, Van Der Walt has the size and speed to make it as an outside centre or wing at Super Rugby level.

Backs Coach Stephen Larkham said Van Der Walt had many similar traits to Clyde Rathbone in the way he attacks.

“We’ve signed Stephan from Queensland as a very passionate, aggressive outside back,” Larkham said.

“Stephan is a bit like Clyde – he’ll run over the top of you before he’ll run around you. He’s a big guy with quality skills and I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do with the benefit of a fulltime system.

“He’s got good size and speed and we think he’s probably slipped under the radar a bit so it will be exciting to see how he goes.

Swanepoel joins the University of Canberra Brumbies from New Zealand where he has been representing Canterbury in the ITM Cup. A former Western Force player who claimed four caps between 2009 and 2011, Swanepoel was on the cusp of featuring for the Crusaders in 2012 before returning to Australian shores in search of more opportunity.

Another player with South African heritage, Swanepoel is a big, physical halfback who intends on pushing Ian Prior and Nic White all the way in the hunt for the starting No 9 jersey.

“He gives us coverage now, particularly with Nic White missing the majority of pre-season through his shoulder injury,” Larkham said.

“He’s only flown in this morning from New Zealand but you’d have to say that early inspections suggest he’s a very promising player.

“At 22 he’s been in Super Rugby before, he’s got four caps with the Force and also spent time with the Crusaders so that experience will certainly work in his favour.”

All 35 spots on the University of Canberra Brumbies roster have now been filled.

Quade was banking on Robbie Deans “imminent” dismissal and the employment of Ewan Mckenzie as Wallaby coach when he made those statements. What an idiot!

Cooper could have been playing 10 in a massive Lions series June. Not many get that honour in a Wallabies shirt. Goes to show why issues need to be resolved internally.

It will be hard for Deans to pick Cooper now, he stuck the knife in when Deans was at his weakest point during the Rugby Championship.
