Habana grabs grand prize

Bryan Habana was named South Africa’s Player of the Year on Thursday night in Cape Town.

Habana was honoured with the top individual national prize after showing great form throughout 2012.

He was part of the Stormers team that topped the South African conference before losing to the Sharks in the semi-final.

He starred for the Springboks during their 2-0 June Test triumph over England. He was also the top try-scorer in the Rugby Championship, crossing the chalk on seven occasions.

He also helped WP to their first Currie Cup title in 11 years. Unfortunately, a knee injury picked up during the domestic final win over the Sharks will see him miss South Africa’s end-of-year tour to Europe in November.

‘This is a humbling experience,’ said Habana. ‘I have to credit the coaches and players I’ve been around. Their support and criticism helped me a lot. The journey of where I was to where I am now wouldn’t have been possible without them.

‘I’d also like to thank Dr Sherylle Calder for helping me focus on the basics. And thanks to my family and friends for all the support. It’s an honour to use my talent to represent this amazing country we call South Africa.’

Habana also receieved the Try of the Year Award for his individual brilliance during the first half of the Boks’ Test against the All Blacks in Dunedin.

The other top prizes were given to wing JP Pietersen (Players’ Player of the Year) and lock Eben Etzebeth (Young Player of the Year).

According to super rugby stats it’s safe to say that Coetzee. overshadowed Kolisi in all departments instead of ‘missed tackles’ where MC missed 34.Now,MC was number one for most tackles made,so basically that missed tackles just showed his commitment to be involved in games at all times.Anyone can play around or interpret stats to suit their own agenda …ne mr captain of industry??

@David-247: He is an excellent openside… and an outstanding 8.

He is second to Flo at openside and second to none in the Bok setup at 8 at the moment…

There would be no place for Keegan in a loosie trio of Kanko, Flo and Coetzee… But fark me there is a place for Keegan in the current setup…

But you dumbfuck size and boere supremacists stuck in the past can’t see it, just like Meyer…

@wnbb-252: with all the metres and tackles you can give me Francois Louw over Marcell anyday. I dont like what he brings to the table.

    @David-243:
6 will be covered by Flo / Brussouw / Maybe Fourie in the future.

8 will be covered by Vermuelen / Botha / Maybe Spies?

So 7 is the position both will be looking at.

Keegan is in the same boat as JdeJ as far as HM is concerned. His gameplan, for want of a better word, like Jakes is based on a mythical “traditional” Bok strength of big, fast, hard running players.
This is also one of the reasons why black players will struggle to make his Bok team.

@Jeraldjay-256: I think Kolisi deserves a shot at 6 as well. 7 we may well see the return of the dinosaurs Schalk and Juan – that would be cool to see Juan back – and Willem Alberts is still one of the premiere 7´s.

    HG
Keep googling stats all you want. You lost the CC and SR final.

Also, thanks very much for making this rugby year even more entertaining, especially the CC final on Sat. The thought of you crying your eyes out made the victory even sweeter.

Give us a HooHa why dont you?

@Jeraldjay-256: at 8 we should be looking at Vermeulen, Kanko (never thought Id say that) and Johnson.

My stats are taken from an Aussie website. Most of these stats websites have different numbers here,so you have to take it sometimes with a pinch of salt.My problem is that for someone like Stommerik to come on here, gives us his numbers, and expect that that should be taken as fact.

Well done to Brian and all other winners.

    Brian had a fabulous year,
    and in my humble opinion,
should be a contender for the IRB Player of the Year as well.

Jantjies and Lambie are there because there’s nobody else. Besides, 10s aren’t usually big players, unless you rate Frans at 10. JdJ for the same reason as Jantjies. Hougaard is supposedly 9 backup.

Was suprised the Sharks (CC) got team of the year.

But the fact that the Stormers,WP, Sharks and Sharks in SR are all technically different teams, makes the award tricky to give.

Overall, I guess the Sharks were the most consistent, but then again, the Stormers finished top of the SR log, but then again, the Sharks topped the CC log, but then again, WP won the CC.

I might have named them joint winners to be honest.

I said “should be a contender”.

No way he could beat McCaw or Read.
But Other Countries, should at least make up the numbers of those
who don’t have a show of winning.

So either McCaw or Read to win the IRB award.
With nominations also for Brian, and perhaps a Bog Leaper and Froggie.

what are peoples thoughts on Wentzel? I must admit I hadnt really seen much of him over the years but took a look at a highlights package of his season at Tigers and he is a really exciting player. Does the lock work well, is big and strong and drags defenders with him, contests well in the lineouts, has some decent pace, intelligent and offloads well in the tackle. I think he has the ability to become the premier 5 option.
