Habana grabs grand prize
2 Nov 2012
Bryan Habana was named South Africa’s Player of the Year on Thursday night in Cape Town.
Habana was honoured with the top individual national prize after showing great form throughout 2012.
He was part of the Stormers team that topped the South African conference before losing to the Sharks in the semi-final.
He starred for the Springboks during their 2-0 June Test triumph over England. He was also the top try-scorer in the Rugby Championship, crossing the chalk on seven occasions.
He also helped WP to their first Currie Cup title in 11 years. Unfortunately, a knee injury picked up during the domestic final win over the Sharks will see him miss South Africa’s end-of-year tour to Europe in November.
‘This is a humbling experience,’ said Habana. ‘I have to credit the coaches and players I’ve been around. Their support and criticism helped me a lot. The journey of where I was to where I am now wouldn’t have been possible without them.
‘I’d also like to thank Dr Sherylle Calder for helping me focus on the basics. And thanks to my family and friends for all the support. It’s an honour to use my talent to represent this amazing country we call South Africa.’
Habana also receieved the Try of the Year Award for his individual brilliance during the first half of the Boks’ Test against the All Blacks in Dunedin.
The other top prizes were given to wing JP Pietersen (Players’ Player of the Year) and lock Eben Etzebeth (Young Player of the Year).

@cane-298:
Really big team too.
I watched ReUnion after the game and Tony and co said the Boks were simply too big.
Not often you hear that these days.

And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I’ll say it clear
I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain
I’ve lived a life that’s full
I traveled each and every highway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way
Regrets, I’ve had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption
I planned each charted course
Each careful step along the byway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way

@cane-311: We ‘WeePees’ are never humble. 11 Years of winning absolutely fuckingnothing couldn’t keep us humble…….

And now for some more awards…
“Referees’s C*ck-up of the Year” – Awarded to Marius Jonker for his “missing” of the blatant knock-on by one M Steyn during the Bulls’ game against us @ Loftus resulting in our losing our conference and subsequently missing the playoffs by one point.
“Linesmens’ C*ck-up of the Year” – Jointly awarded to Stefan Breytenbach & Lourens van der Merwe for their roles in the above bloop.
“TMO’s C*ck-up of the Year” – To whoever he was that fateful night in April – See above.
THANKS GUYS, STERLING EFFORT THERE.
And finally, SARU’s very own “Pinnochio Award” – the judges were at a stalemate about this one and finally awarded it jointly to Messrs Hoskins & Roux for misleading the rugby-loving players public so much…
And finally

@BrumbiesBoy-326:
still harping on that…
i would have thought a more fitting bunch of recipients would have been
keith brown
ar’s simon moore & julian pritchard
and tmo george ayoub
for their disgusting handling of the cheetahs first game away on their arstrelasian tour against those ‘largesse receiving from the refs’ brumbies.
a game which by all accounts they should have won… where would your brumbies have been then..?
in case you dont remember so good:
Sanzar referees boss Lyndon Bray has admitted there was a “big imbalance” in the way Keith Brown allowed the Brumbies an advantage in hitting in at the scrums in their match on Saturday.
Bray has also called for more clarity on the final penalty, the one which gifted the Brumbies a victory on the whistle after they were behind for most of the match.
It is clear that Sanzar are not happy with Brown’s calls in the game, especially in the setpiece, where the Cheetahs were penalised five times, often within striking distance, and saw the Brumbies claw their way back from 23-10 to win the game.
While there is nothing that can be done about the result, talk within refereeing circles is that Brown is on shaky ground and will need to up his game or fall off the Sanzar refereeing panel.

@BrumbiesBoy-326:
The penalty that handed the Brumbies victory over the Cheetahs on Saturday will be investigated by Sanzar.
With the siren having sounded referee Keith Brown adjudged the Cheetahs to have deliberately and illegally rotated the scrum. Christian Lealiifano subsequently kicked the penalty that gave the Brumbies a 24-23 victory.
Lyndon Bray, SANZAR’s refereeing boss, told the Beeld that three scrum specialists – former Bok prop Balie Swart, New Zealand scrum coach Mike Cron and former Wallaby prop Patricio Noriega – will review that decision as well as two other calls to determine their legitimacy.
‘Keith may not have been very sharp with the early engagement of the scrums and therefore it wasn’t a pretty sight throughout the game. But, concerning that last decision, we’ll have to determine if the teams firstly scrummed forward and then lawfully swayed the scrum with momentum. When it sways immediately without force, it may be unlawful,’ said Bray
