Serfontein recalled for title defence
5 Nov 2012
Jan Serfontein will enjoy a second stint with the Baby Boks when they defend their Junior World Championship title in France next year.
Serfontein won the IRB Player of the Tournament award for his contributions to South Africa’s trophy-winning campaign in 2012. The promising centre was later named the SA U20 Player of the Year.
Baby Boks coach Dawie Theron has named Serfontein in his extended training squad ahead of the 2013 tournament. A large number of Blue Bulls and Western Province players have been included, which is unsurprising given these two teams contested the U19 Currie Cup final.
Theron did not call up any players currently writing their matric exams, thus ruling out a number of outstanding players from the SA U18 team, including WP flyhalf Handrè Pollard.
A training camp will be staged in Stellenbosch from 9 to 12 November.
‘It is still early days, but I am very excited about this squad,’ said Theron. ‘This will be a first step towards France in June and a lot can happen before then, but it will be good to get the squad together and start moulding them.
‘We will no doubt look at those things that worked for us this year and look at how that compliments the strengths of this new group. The camp will be exciting as we’ll get new energy and ideas as well as a lot of new faces.’

Justin Geduldt (WP). (sp?)
Another product from Tygerberg High.
He is the star of their 7′s team.

@Sasuke-2: Yes: Marvin Orie, the lock, is also a product of Tygerberg Hoërskool. Orie and the left wing of the Bulls U/21 team who won the cup last week were there at the same time: Travis Ismail. Travis was a brilliant athlete as well.
Geduldt and his former centre partner, Edwin Sass, formed a mean partnership in the midfield for Tygerberg. Sass played for WP U/19 team a couple of matches this season. He is still at Tygerberg

Bulls make up the majority. Big shock.
Has there even been a time during the last 5 years when the Bulls HAVEN’T dominated this group? Even when their previous u19 team was 2nd last on the log they still had the most players in the next SA u20 training group.
Of course if the Bulls have had the best SAu20 players for the last 5 years they’d be the most promising South African side, which erm isn’t the case…
It’s the u21 group they’re waiting on now. Shame about the previosu generations.

Is Dries Swanepoel injured? Disappointed I never got see any of the u19 guys in the tournament.
I remember that Jacques du Plessis being highly rated as a lock. Interesting that he’s now listed as a loose forward.

@goodstuff-9: No current schoolboys are included in the group seeing that they are writing their matric exams at the moment. I think there will be a few of them added to the group

I see twins Jesse and Daniel Kriel, as well as Reagan Smith all from Maritzburg College have signed for the Bulls. KZN need to pull finger.
