Carter stars as ABs smash Scots

JON CARDINELLI reports on the All Blacks’ effortless 51-22 victory against Scotland on Sunday.

New Zealand operated at a low gear for much of this contest. There were times when they stepped up the intensity and produced some magical attacking touches, where they exhibited the high level of execution that we’ve come to expect from the best team on the planet. But for the most part, they didn’t control the game by playing for territory, and their defence wasn’t up to its usual high standards.

Perhaps the inconsistency was down to the changes made by coach Steve Hansen for this particular fixture. Perhaps it was down to motivation. Indeed, while the All Blacks played the game at breakneck speed, they weren’t at their combative best. Then again, they didn’t need to be.

Dan Carter made an early error to give the Scottish optimists hope. In the build up, Scotland had spoken about rush defence tactics keeping the New Zealanders at bay. This paid dividends early on, with centre Matt Scott intercepting a pass made by Carter. Scott then found Tim Visser in support, and the Flying Dutchman finished what would be the first of his two tries.

But the Scots failed to maintain that defensive pressure. Carter made amends for that no-look pass soon after by making two linebreaks in a subsequent movement. The Scots were punished for standing off the All Blacks flyhalf, as Carter’s second break led to the simplest of tries for Israel Dagg.

While the All Blacks underperformed in certain areas, Carter was in sublime form in front of goal. He finished the match with figures of nine from 10, and a personal tally of 21 points.

Carter also had a hand in several of the All Blacks’ tries. The visitors played the game at a furious pace, making easy ground and linebreaks through the inside channels.

Once the initial break was made, men like Carter were key in identifying the space, and across the board, the All Blacks’ handling skills and finishing was excellent.

Scotland No 7 Ross Rennie was injured early in the match, and the hosts battled to compete at the breakdown thereafter. The absence of a genuine openside meant that Scotland had nobody to slow down the All Blacks’ ruck recycle. This in turn made it difficult for the Scots’ line defence, as there was not much time to realign.

The All Blacks conceded three tries in this fixture, and this will annoy the coaching staff. Scotland did well to take three chances. If they had been more clinical, they may have scored another when All Blacks No 6 Adam Thomson was in the sin bin if they had only secured a lineout throw on the opposition try-line. As it transpired, they only succeeded in handing possession back to the All Blacks.

It’s frightening to think about how much further damage a full strength All Blacks’ side, or indeed one operating at full intensity, may have inflicted on Scotland. The All Blacks cruised to a 51-22 victory on Sunday without producing their most polished display. It’s a simple truth that highlights the gulf in quality between the world champions and the Six Nations stragglers.

BBC rugby commentator Jonathan Davies arrested over late night pub brawl

    UPDATED:19:09 GMT, 18 November 2011

Arrested: Rugby legend Jonathan Davies was detained by police following a late night brawl outside a pub

BBC commentator and rugby legend Jonathan Davies was arrested for assault after a late-night bust-up outside a pub.

Davies, 49, was cautioned by police after being taken away from the pub after midnight in a ‘street disturbance.’

He was arrested after police were called to the William Hancock pub – part of a notorious pub crawl known as ‘Mumbles Mile’ in Swansea, South Wales.

It is sixth in a series of nine pubs on the Mumbles seafront in the boozy drinking session beloved by rugby players and students.

Davies, who captained the Welsh rugby union team, was arrested in the early hours of Sunday after police were called to a ruck.

Father-of-three Davies was cautioned for common assault and later released by police.

South Wales Police confirmed: ‘A 49-year-old man was arrested and cautioned. Another man was arrested but released without further action.’

The replay showed the ref’s call was correct.

@Slumtown-44: the Boks can’t even pass properly. Did you notice yesterday how many basic passes were thrown behind the receiver’s head?

We are woefully inadequate in the basic skills department.

    Hi all,

Missed the game last night cause of a weeding, only caught a horrible 10 minutes in the first half. Painful to watch…

Can someone explain to me the comments regarding JdV and Strauss swapping captaincy etc.?

Also how was JdV and Taute? I can’t imagine very good…

  • 58.Liewe Luiperd: Reply to this comment

Because for far too long verkrampte domkop people like Matfield – who during that shocking 1st half yesterday was saying all we needed to do was kick better – have been in control of the game in SA.

    Kicking?

FFS kicking is the one thing we do ok at.

  • 59.JockBok: Reply to this comment

    That was a real one

  • 60.Slumtown: Reply to this comment

@Liewe Luiperd-54: yeha which makes one wonder why they arent being drilled to death on the basics. Poor coaching. When theres a bit of rain we are all – ohh the conditions were difficult – well you know what – you effing practice the whole week under a friggin sprinkler system till you gete it bloody right. Always some lameness. And dont even get me started on supprt play and offloading in the tackle. Pfff at the moment i´m hating the Boks for leaving me disillusioned week in and out.

@AiDoc-53: No, I wrote after watching the replay. He caught it on the line and landed about a meter inside. Don’t try to tell me otherwise. I’ve recorded the game and can watch it as many times as I like.

@Bagel-57: How was the weeding? I hope it wasn’t the type that grows between brick pavers – they can be a *****.

  • 64.Nils: Reply to this comment

And now Scots have scored more than in previous 3 Tests vs ABs combined. Some positives for them.

  • 65.lesiba: Reply to this comment

@Liewe Luiperd-58: I’m so glad someone else heard that ridiculous comment. We had one of the worst ever 40 minutes and the only thing Matfield could say is that we just need to kick better. I was speechless.

  • 66.Slumtown: Reply to this comment

@Liewe Luiperd-58: ja agree but have to say we arent even doing the kicking all that well of late. Cant win a bloody game if you kick all yer possession away either – which for some reason we dont understand either. Its infuriating i tell you. If I was headcoach there would be none of the ****. Id love to be a fly on the wall of a week of Heinekes coaching cos it seems to me the average blogger on Keo has more of an idea than he does. How can that be?

@Nils-64: yeah theyre playing ok considering – Boks are in for a rough game next week if you ask me.

So difficult to watch though Nils. Let’s hope that score gives Scotland the equivalent of a half time kick in the nuts.

I usually head over once a year to visit the family over there (From my Mothers side). Needless to say the paving stones of there houses have never look neater.

Now please answer my post? Trying to convince my Dad they JdV is rubbish.

@CSI:Rugby-68: Good on him, one more decent finisher for them.

@Slumtown-67: Sure, they make this Test slightly more resembling a contest rather than an exibition game for the visitors. Which is a commendable thing from all viewpoints.

B&I Lions are going to have a powerful backline for Australia Tour. Both Welsh wingers, Roberts and Tuilagi in the Centres with Kearney/Halfpenny/Foden at fullback. Now you can add Visser to the mix.

Which African country you in now? Senegal still?

So hows Heynekes clueless comment after the match
“”We’ve been under the sword a few times this year and we’ll take a lot from our win against Ireland,” said Meyer.

“But we have to keep our feet on the ground and stay humble. There’s still stuff to learn and Scotland are waiting for us. ”

If one single Bok felt complacent after that match yesterday they should be put on a bloody plane back home today. There was nothing to feel satisfied about. They came from behind but really man – there were no mega fireworks they just started doing some basics better.

So say hello to the CC for me and tell her I’ll see her some time over the next few years ;)

The only players that had a good game yesterday were
    - Strauss, Etzebeth, Louw, Pienaar
Others ranged from average to anonymous to absolute rubbish.

Why one would draft CJ into the squad is beyond me nowadays – he is beyond useless. Heineke vd Merwe made an immediate impact coming on. Juandre Kruger is no replacement at 5 – we have a serious lack of depth at 5. Houghaard not up to it at wing at present. Could have replaced him with Mvovo at any stage to try inject a bit more into the game. De Villiers was very poor in the first half but improved in the 2nd but serious issues with how he kills attacking ball. Taute isnt a centres a55. Did nothing of not – why he wasnt replaced by De Jongh after 60 is beyond belief. 14 JP Pietersen had a very off and rusty game – Mvovo could have replaced him too and we wouldnt have lost anything. Kirhcener utter lame ununispiring crud. Had he put de Jongh at 13 and Taute at 15 at elast we could have seen if Taute was any better and worthy of being in the squad.
Heyneke obviously doesnt have a clue.
