De Jongh set for Murrayfield start
13 Nov 2012
RYAN VREDE, in Edinburgh, reports Juan de Jongh is likely to run on against Scotland, while Pat Lambie is expected to be retained at flyhalf.
De Jongh impressed for the Stormers in Super Rugby and recently enjoyed an excellent Currie Cup, scoring in the final. Coach Heyneke Meyer has been reluctant to use him. He is concerned primarily about the player’s size, worrying that this would compromise him in contact situations at Test level.
However, Meyer strongly suggested he sees Scotland as an opportunity to give the 24-year-old game time.
‘We’re a relatively young team and haven’t played together much, we want to keep some continuity. We respect Scotland and won’t just give Test caps away. There won’t be a lot of changes but the one that will probably happen is to see Juan come in. He has been knocking hard on the door and deserves a chance,’ Meyer said.
‘It isn’t definite, I want to speak to some of the [senior] players as well, but he probably will start. We’ll have a rotation policy in that position. Jaco Taute probably had his best Test against Ireland [at outside centre], and we’ll have to see whether we pair Juan and Jaco, who can also play inside centre, and give Jean de Villiers a break. Jean has played with a couple of injuries recently so he needs a rest. Jaco could also play at fullback [replacing Zane Kirchner], but again, I don’t want to make too many changes.’
Meyer is also expected to persist with Lambie at flyhalf after praising his performance at Lansdowne Road in difficult conditions. With the coaching staff in search of quality back-up to the injured Johan Goosen, who’ll reclaim his starting position if he stays fit for the 2013 Test season, Lambie has the inside lane to be that man.
‘I’ll probably stick by Pat,’ Meyer said. ‘It was a difficult start for him because we just didn’t have the ball [in the first half]. The second half was a bit of a catch-up. He did some nice things in possession. He has high standards and so do we, so we’re looking for an improvement. But he showed some good touches and I want to give him some confidence going forward.’
Meyer said there were likely to be changes on the bench, which could see Elton Jantjies replacing Morne Steyn as pivot cover. Elsewhere Gurthro Steenkamp has recovered from a rib injury that kept him out of the weekend’s Test, and will come into the frame to replace Beast Mtawarira, who has been sent home after suffering a recurrence of a heart condition he was treated for earlier this year.
Team doctor Craig Roberts, however, sought to allay fears about Mtawarira’s health and playing future. ‘He has been treated for an irregular heartbeat in hospital in Dublin. This isn’t life threatening or career threatening in any way and he is quite capable of playing with it,’ Roberts said.
‘Heyneke and I had a meeting with him today and made the decision to send him to Cape Town to have a minor procedure done later this week where they try to isolate and eradicate the cells that are causing the irregular rhythm. He had it done earlier this year, but clearly they didn’t get all the cells.
‘Anything can set it off, we don’t actually know precisely what does. I’ve also had quite a few players who’ve had it. Beast has gone into this rhythm a couple of times in the past and we’ve just managed it. I need to make it clear that he could have played this weekend at no risk.’
Meyer added: ‘If it happens again this week we’re back to square one. It worries me and it is at the back of his mind. You want guys out there that are totally focussed. He is also on medication that sometimes slows you down. It is also important for him to be with his family. It was a difficult decision, but the right one we believe.’
Jannie du Plessis picked up an ankle injury in Dublin, but Meyer and Roberts indicated that he was likely to recover. ‘He is looking good. We’ll assess him at training and we are hopeful he will be ready for the weekend.’

@katman-443: YOH! Things just got HEAVY!
Gloves are off now!

the rhino poaching scourge is a tough one to understand and even harder to stamp out when you look at the obscene amounts of money being paid for the horn.
forget about arguments over its efficacy as an aphrodisiac, its a red herring that will not help.
besides, the horn is also prized for use in ornamantla dagger handles in places like yemen so the demand has far wider sources than old men who cant get a woody.
fact remains that the demand will not go away anytime soon.
the difficulty is then curtailing the trade through force or the might of the law or using others means such as dehorning rhino or poisoning the horn (surely unacceptable to contemplate murder?).
the sheer size of the areas rhinos move in and the often geographical isolation of their range makes poaching from helicopters and even on foot very easy if you know what you are doing and have access to the technology being used by these poachers.
i dont think force of arms will ever succeed.
so we can kiss rhinos goodbye with the possible exception of remnant captive populations in countries with higher security. these rhinos would benefit from being kept in small enclosures from a safety perspective but would the species would be reduced to a monument to mans disgraceful ignorance and wilful destruction of our natural environment.
or
we can begin wholesale efforts to farm rhinos in captivity to supply the huge market for the horn. the horn can be safely harvested from the animal and selective breeding can produce rhinos with faster, larger growing horns.
its sad but this may be the only way out as if rhino horn can be supplied cheaply enough, the value may drop to the point that it is unprofitable to take the risk of poaching.
the argument hasnt really borne out with perlemoen as yet but with increasing commercial abalone farms i believe that it will eventually and the additional plus is that seed stock for rhino farms can be supplied under the proviso that a percentage of the offspring must be supplied at no cost to restock wild populations.
thats my view anyway but its one i am more than happy to be wrong about and in the meantime i commend the efforts of anyone (such as mark boucher) who is involved in any way in attempting to save this iconic species.

@i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-445: Sickfucks Bakkies.I remember many years back when the ‘Canned Lion hunting’ was exposed, I found the phone number and address for one of the farms on which this despicable practice took place……and boy oh boy I had myself some fun.
But we really are at the stage where the man in the street has actually GOT to do more than just wail and moan about it.
One can look at helping them financially. They have just recently got their 1st Malinois from Germany, who is being trained to ‘sniff out’ rhino horn, ivory etc at Customs at OR Tambo International. These dogs cost a fortune to train……but the more of them there are, the more fuckwits who will fall…..

13 Nov 2012, 13:11 pm
@The Rangerman-452: Your solution does have a lot of support. (Personally, I could never support such a measure…but, I can understand and appreciate why it is seen as a viable solution…)
The whole business just makes me sick though.

13 Nov 2012, 13:13 pm
@Hurricane-470: Not disagreeing. He often has very valid or at least very debatable points.
Its just when someone does disagree with him he tends to fly of the handle a bit which really isnt conducive to proper debate. Which, in my opinion, is a pity.
13 Nov 2012, 13:14 pm
@Taahirah-461:
I doubt it.
And one day I will meet him.
In fact,
I’d like to meet Skoppie and Katman at the same time.
And I would like to have a cattle prodder in my hand at the same time. (you know………………………….one of those things that gives and electric shock to misbehaving livestock).
13 Nov 2012, 13:14 pm
@Hurricane-454: Southern White Rhino numbers recovered from a reported 40 animals (more likely around 100) in 1897 when the hluhluwe game reserve was promulgated to around 20,000 in the early 2000′s.
so 589 being slaughtered in a year feasibly represents 2.5% of the poulation.
given the fact that their gestation period is around two years, replacing slaughtered rhinos is a very slow process.
in captivity the calving period (time between calves being born) can be artificially shortened by removing the calfs shortly after birth causing the female to enter oestrus far quicker than if she is nursing.
artificial insemination is also an option.
we have options now but the window is short.
13 Nov 2012, 13:14 pm

13 Nov 2012, 13:18 pm
@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food-471: that may be the problem though ruckles.
the more fractured the efforts to save the species the less chance we have of succeeding.
black rhino took the real brunt of the first wave of rhino poaching in the 1960′s dropping from an estimated 100,000 to about 400 and their numbers today are still only around 4500. they are harder to hunt due to their preference for thicker bush and insane aggression (they make skop look like a teddy bear).

@Hurricane-447:
yip ,agreed.
@The Rangerman-452:
yes, farming them intentionally for thier horns to satisfy a perverse market could well be one part of a holistic solution to the poaching problem.
i personally do not like it bit can understand and agree to it in principle.
any income derived could be used to subsidise the remaining rhino in reserves and national parks also perhaps.

@i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-488: Personally, I don’t know why we can’t just wipe out the perverse market using whatever works fastest, and inflicts the most pain. (Yes, I know it’s an emotional reaction….)
13 Nov 2012, 13:24 pm
@Hurricane-484: no mate what i mean is that it took 100 years to get their numbers from 100 to 20,000 and over the last four years over 1500 of them have been slaughtered.
at the current rate we will not have any rhinos within 20 to 30 years and this is no joke.
captive breeding is just an option i thin may help but like bakkies and ruckles i wouldnt mind hearing some of these poachers got shot in the face.
thats hectic, did i just say that out loud?
13 Nov 2012, 13:26 pm
