Thomson escapes lengthy ban
14 Nov 2012
All Blacks flank Adam Thomson has been suspended for just one week following an incident where he stamped on the head of a Scotland player.
Thomson appeared before the independent IRB-appointed judicial officer, Jean-Noel Couraud (of France) on Wednesday, having been cited for an alleged stamp in last Sunday’s match.
According to a statement on the hearing: ‘In upholding the citing by the independent IRB Citing Commissioner, the act of foul play, contrary to Law 10.4(b), was deemed by the judicial officer to be at the lower end of the scale of IRB sanctions, after having viewed various angles of the incident and listened to representations by the player, the All Blacks’ assistant coach and the player’s legal representative at the hearing.’
From the low end entry point of two weeks, the judicial officer allowed one week of mitigation, taking into account, in particular, the player’s conduct at the hearing.
A sanction of one week was imposed, with Thomson suspended until 18 November. The player has the right of appeal.
Meanwhile, Wallabies lock Rob Simmons received a hefty suspension for a tip-tackle on a French player in last Saturday’s Test. Simmons will be out of action for eight weeks.
The statement from Simmons’ hearing said that the tackle ‘was deemed by the judicial officer to be at the high end of the scale of IRB sanctions. From the high end entry point of 12 weeks, the judicial officer added two weeks of aggravation to reflect the need for a deterrent for this type of dangerous tackle but allowed the maximum six weeks of mitigation, including the player’s exemplary previous disciplinary record and his conduct at the hearing.’

@Dawn-47:
Well if the hats fits, wear it I suppose.
But I don’t recall you dumping on everything NZ in the past just because it is NZ.
was I wrong?

Kats run away, waiting his friend gunther for back up.
Then comes the Burt and Ernie show.

@NZINCHINA-50: That’s just lame. The whole racism blanket insult is for stupid people who can’t rustle up anything better.
You probably still call Germans Nazis.
15 Nov 2012, 10:40 am
@Brads-51:
You not wrong
It was a stamp but only gets a week.
15 Nov 2012, 10:41 am
@NZINCHINA-50:
Up your game man
You worse than Pops on a bad day
15 Nov 2012, 10:43 am
@Dawn-54: It’s like the bloody post office. “This one is a one week stamp”.

The man is an idiot and will never play for the AB’s again – I hope.
If that happens it will be a epitaph on his career that he will live with for the rest of his life.
Adam Thompson = Idiot

i’ve always liked thomson as a player… always looked to me to be a good honest hard grafter on the field who gives it everything… i don’t think he’s a dirty player at all… anything but…
pity though, that a thoughtless moment could become the focal point of his career…
but must say to our kiwi friends here… this is not just another old saffa gripe…
jason leonard, andy robinson and plenty in the uk media are making a lot of noise about the sentence too…
no saffa complaint could have got the IRB to review the decision…
15 Nov 2012, 10:53 am
I’ll start all of my posts by saying, as I said before, I thought he deserved 2-3 weeks and I hope Hansen makes sure he holds tackle bags for the next three weeks.
But I would also say Greyling deserved more than one game for flying over the ruck and smashing a man in the face with momentum and a prop’s body weight behind him.
Kankowski also got 1 week for a stamp. Rautenbach got 3 weeks but his was a real stamp, leg straightened. I’d want Thompson to get somewhere in between when they review it
Any mention of Botha is a waste of time. Thompson doesn’t have biting, gouging, and headbutting on his record
15 Nov 2012, 10:56 am
@ufo-58: The UK media, I literally laughed out loud at that. Are these the same papers that still go on about us poaching islanders who were born in Wellington? Or think the reason we have not lost to the celts in 50 years is because we get some advantage from the haka and it should be banned?
15 Nov 2012, 10:56 am
@Brads-57:
sheesh brads…
didn’t he sign your match-day programme…:wink:
why do you dislike him so… obviously has to do with waaay more than just this incident…?
15 Nov 2012, 10:58 am
@gonzo-60:
point being this is not a saffa-lead anti-AB crusade…
15 Nov 2012, 11:02 am
@ufo-58:
Don’t hold back, say what you are thinking.
NZ gets special treatment – there I said it for you.
Whining to me is like wizzing into the wind. All you do is get sprayed back with wizz..
15 Nov 2012, 11:03 am
@ufo-62: There is a difference
Home nations think there has been a conspiracy across the generations to favour NZ
Saffers think there is a conspiracy that everyone is out to get them
NZers have no idea what you’re all talking about and can’t understand how anyone wouldn’t like our dear Richie
15 Nov 2012, 11:04 am
@ufo-62:
Thing is UFO we cant tell if it is or not.
Anti AB crusade happens every night on keo.
Some for a good cause and most for utter hatred and jealousy.
15 Nov 2012, 11:05 am
@gonzo-60:
Yeah thats the same papers while there own team is filling up with Kiwis
15 Nov 2012, 11:11 am
@ufo-61:
Wrong, I always thought he was a player that gave his all, limited as it was.
The stamping incident was separate.
To my mind he knew what he was doing and was attempting some delicate procedure that involved contact with a players head, presumably hoping to extricate the ball.
Just what planet was the man on.
As I said, he is an idiot.

@Hurricane-11:
An individuals record shouldnt determine the extent of the punishment . the effects of the action are going to be the same regardless of who does it
Saying bakkies botha is the worst thug to ever play rugby is as true as richie mccaw being the most prolific cheat to ever set foot on the field
15 Nov 2012, 11:14 am
@boktillzero-68: VERY TRUE
15 Nov 2012, 11:15 am
@boktillzero-68:
You do have a point, i would not be happy if an AB eye gouged and got 1 week cos of his history.
But you have to draw the line somewhere dont you?
Surely you cant have the same person up for elbowing headbutting and eye gouging every year over his 10 year career.
15 Nov 2012, 11:15 am
@boktillzero-68: Sorry but that’s how the justice systems works. Bakies got a decent ban for the headbutt on Cowan because of his record of biting and gouging and injuring his own Springbok team mates
15 Nov 2012, 11:17 am
@Brads-67:
He is an idiot.
15 Nov 2012, 11:18 am
@boktillzero-68:
I agree.
Just like in life, repeat convictions should be held against you.
Except, McCaw is not being constantly penalized therefore he has not infringed and you are an outrageous whiner wishing he was.
15 Nov 2012, 11:24 am
@Brads-63:
that’s funny… by your own posts you demonstrate you have a major issue with thomson (based on more than that one second of play) and wish he never plays for the ABs again…
now you’re so intent on being the victim you’re determined to tar everyone with the same brush… pity… thought you were more balanced than that…
“It is folly to punish your neighbor by fire when you live next door.”
i’ll defer to your experience wrt wizzing in the wind… just hope you wash your hands before typing your posts…!!
@Hurricane-65:
yeah bud… i know you can’t… that’s why i thought i’d mention it…
look i know some guys on ALL sides like to come to keo for their daily dose of mud-wrasslin’… truth is that people on all sides just can’t wait to put the boot into the other side when they perceive the other side is down or weak…
but the facts are it was guys like leonard and robinson who got the irb to review the sentence…
like i said… i like thomson and was happy to see him selected… obviously i can’t speak for brads irrational feelings about the player… you know ‘us’ saffricans…
hey hang on a bit…???
15 Nov 2012, 11:30 am
@ufo-74:
“‘yeah bud… i know you can’t… that’s why i thought i’d mention it”
lol
Cheers UFO, i knew you looked after me.
15 Nov 2012, 11:32 am
@Brads-67:
@Hurricane-72:
i disagree both of you… he is not an idiot or a nasty person or a dirty player…
he did an idiotic thing…
big difference…
these things happen in rugby and in life… but to assassinate a person’s character and integrity for one mistake is going a wee bit over the top dontcha think… ?whether its a windy day or not…
sheesh if we had to judge ourselves on keo by single posts none of us would look like anything less than raving psychos…
everyone makes mistakes…
15 Nov 2012, 11:32 am
@Hurricane-75:
got your back bud…
15 Nov 2012, 11:34 am
@ufo-76:
Damn it UFO.
Can you just stop it and agree
Certainly makes things alot easier on my side.
15 Nov 2012, 11:36 am
@Hurricane-78:
okay okay…
i agree…
to disagree…
15 Nov 2012, 11:39 am
@ufo-74:
Where have I said I have had issues with Thompson?
Good grief, this is a prime example of people like you making things up from God knows what and then expanding it into some outrageous assumption.
Is this a trait of all Saffa’s and does this explain the assumptions SARU have used in appointing or sacking coaches over the last 17 years.
15 Nov 2012, 11:45 am
@Brads-80:
you serious…??? hahaha…
read your post #57 again…
better still… let me cut-n-paste it for you…
57.Brads:
15 Nov 2012, 10:46 am @Dawn-54:
The man is an idiot and will never play for the AB’s again – I hope.
If that happens it will be a epitaph on his career that he will live with for the rest of his life.
Adam Thompson = Idiot
you said it brads…
own it…
15 Nov 2012, 11:46 am
@ufo-76:
AB’s are not average people, therefore you cannot pigeonhole them the same as the man in the street.
Thompson knew what he was doing and he is an idiot as a consequence.
15 Nov 2012, 11:48 am
@ufo-81:
Are you admitting to being a moron or are you just drunk?
15 Nov 2012, 11:59 am
@Brads-82:
who’s making things up now…?
please cut-n-paste the post in which i said ABs are average people…
however i suspect they may be a little more average than you believe… yes… even ABs make mistakes…
you must be a very righteous and correct fellow to advocate someone not playing for the ABs again because of one mistake… let’s hope you never find yourself or anyone in your family in the unfortunate position of making a mistake… i fear the confrontation with your own fallibility may be too much for you to bear…
but strange how you are so indignant about thomson… have never seen you post that any other non-average AB people should never play for the team again when they have erred and been pinged for foul play…
i responded directly to comments you made…
you are responding with generalizations, innuendo, red herrings and shifted goal posts…
quit while you’re behind…
also strange that here i am… a bok supporter… defending an AB player to you… an AB supporter…
there may be a message in there somewhere…?
maybe you’ll get it when you cool down…
15 Nov 2012, 12:28 pm
@ufo-84:
Stop being a dork.
Thompson was and always would be a fringe player no matter how long he was in the AB environment.
But this stomping incident is unreal.
Even the thug Bakkies Botha could come up with an excuse for his foul play on occasions, but Thomson’s effort was beyond that.
Why you defend anyone who rakes another players head is lost on me.
15 Nov 2012, 12:45 pm
@Brads-85:
hehehe
what is so very obviously lost on you is difference between deploring the incident and assassinating the character and integrity of the man…
but you didn’t understand that the first time i said it so i won’t waste my time explaining it again…
