Wallabies lock gets heavy ban
15 Nov 2012
Rob Simmons has received an eight-week suspension for a dangerous tackle on Yannick Nyanga in Paris last Saturday.
Wallabies coach Robbie Deans said the ARU had not decided whether it would appeal.
‘We’re disappointed in the decision but I haven’t had the opportunity to read the decision yet and obviously we’ll do that before we settle on [whether] that’s the end of the matter or not,’ he said.
The IRB judicial officer deemed Simmons’s tackle to be at the ‘high end’ of the scale, so gave an entry point of 12 weeks. Two weeks was added as a ‘deterrent’ before six weeks was taken off the penalty for Simmons’s ‘exemplary previous disciplinary record’.
The Wallabies were dealt a further blow when centre Pat McCabe was ruled out of the Test against England with a stiff neck that requires further scans.

@Hurricane-47:
Smit last started a game on July 5, when he led the Boks against the All Blacks in a Tri-Nations Test in Wellington. He did not stay long and left the field with a groin injury after All Black Reuben Thorne used him as a rather large caber in an extraordinary (to all except the referee) off-the-ball, after-the-whistle, incident.
Smit returned to South Africa for surgery and has since been recuperating, finally making a five-minute appearance off the bench last week against the Lions last Saturday.

@MacToogie-50:
no, they are filthier imo.
15 Nov 2012, 10:12 am
@Hurricane-48:
and your point being? the point isnt who is the dirtiest, all teams have had their moments, the point is what the AB’s claim and what is truth which we find disturbing, and most importantly what your team is allowed to get away with, for whatever reason that may be.
15 Nov 2012, 10:13 am
@MacToogie-50:
Ok then we’re on the same page….good…
15 Nov 2012, 10:13 am
@i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-51:
Rueben thorn…ok, just shows how brain dead you are.
15 Nov 2012, 10:15 am
@i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-52:
hehe….you on the other hand are a couple of chapters behind……extra tuition for you…..
15 Nov 2012, 10:18 am
@MacToogie-50:
No one is denying anything.
We know Thompson did wrong and so does he, but it seems it is outr fault that the sentance was light and we are now the filthiest
15 Nov 2012, 10:19 am
@MacToogie-50: I have to agree with you ,there is very little between the teams in idiots ,thugs and tossers.Having said that Thompson should have gone for at least 4 weeks.Rucking is as far as i know still legal,and d1cks like him cause refs to get the jitters about rucking at all.I mean would HRH king Ritchie lay all over the ball if he had the Bok pack tearing his back to shreds(i am not talking about stomping.That is a different beast all together).
15 Nov 2012, 10:19 am
Oh here we go again, the dipsh it doos hurricane trying to justify the unjustifiable. What a complete a rsewipe!
15 Nov 2012, 10:21 am
@MacToogie-53:
And is it our fault that some sentances seem light.
So does that mean we get called scum and filthy?
15 Nov 2012, 10:21 am
One week for head stamp?
Kuk man
I saw it and like someone said earlier – the cog in his head turned one notch and he realised there were a million cameras around.
Not before he got one in though
15 Nov 2012, 10:23 am
@Hurricane-57:
“I never intended to make contact with another player in the game. I had a fair chance to lay that case today. I’m happy I had the chance to state my case and that it was listened to before he came to his conclusion,” Thompson said
so what was the punch preceding the stomp for?
like i said, i dont know why AB’s get leaner bans but it is evident and wrong, and just look at the poll on http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/all-blacks/7952664/Thomson-ban-under-scrutiny-as-review-announced and you will see what you Kiwi;’s think of the ban.
15 Nov 2012, 10:24 am
They get light sentences cos everyone loves them and they are at pinnacle of world rugby!
15 Nov 2012, 10:26 am
@Hurricane-60:
just because you are not sanctioned does that make you an angel? if we get called filthy as a rugby nation for those types of antics then so should the rest, just because AB’s are exempt from rules doesnt make them clean so yes the name is justified, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander mate.
15 Nov 2012, 10:28 am
@MacToogie-62:
Again, why is the sentence our fault?
He pleaded guilty cos he knew he did wrong. But it seems we get blamed for the sentence.
Thing is if it was McCaw lying over the ball not letting it out and a Bok put his foot on his head…it would be ok cos McCaw shouald not have been there.
15 Nov 2012, 10:31 am
@MacToogie-62:
Punch???
lol that is no punch, you seem to be getting a bit silly here.
15 Nov 2012, 10:32 am
@MacToogie-64:
honestly where are you getting this from?
I did not say anyone were angels, i said thompson was guilty so what point are you trying to get across here?
15 Nov 2012, 10:38 am
Let me re-post what I said on another thread:
There’s this schmaltzy view of AB rugby as the darlings of the sport world – this little island nation with this great team – that somehow needs to be nurtured and protected so that it’s legend can remain pure and intact. It’s like a feel-good movie plot with a wholesome hero and a cool soundtrack. And this leads to two entirly separate sets of rules – both on and off the field. Referees, commentators and ignorant fence sitting fans have all been duped into this “they’re all good blokes who would never hurt a fly and they’d all be played by Ben Affleck in the movie and how can you be nasty with them when they’re the kind of guys you’d want to have a beer with?” nonsense. It’s a myth that needs to be busted wide open so that the playing field can be leveled again.
15 Nov 2012, 10:40 am
@katman-68: Invictus!
15 Nov 2012, 10:41 am
@Hurricane-65:
i would never condone a player having his head stepped on no matter who the players involved are.
ok lets clear this up for you, there are 3 separate issues in our discussion here
a) There is an obvious bias leaning towards AB players when handing out sanctions, i already said i dont know the reason or who is to blame but it is wrong. and for AB fans to deny this is wrong.
b) you stated that AB fans also see as wrong, obviously not wrong enough because they agree with a 1 week ban (see the poll), which means they fine with a head stomp getting of light.
c) you dont agree with my “AB are filthy” claim, if you believe that the AB are innocent in terms of dirty play in world rugby then i would say you are either delusional or quite happy to accept dirty play from your team (because there are lenient or no sanctions) which makes you filthy.
my point is, we are all the same in terms dirty play, there are no saints, and all the teams should be punished equally for any of those offenses, at this stage the facts prove that this is not the case.
15 Nov 2012, 10:45 am
@MacToogie-70: To be fair that poll was a Yes/no answer,Was one week fair Yes or no .So if you voted no was it to long or to short??
15 Nov 2012, 10:46 am
@Hurricane-67: ok fine you say he is guilty, the next question is do you believe a 1 week ban is sufficient for making contact with a player head with your studs, seeing as Higginbottom got 4 weeks for that graze on McCaw?
and if you watch the game again, you will see the punch, whether it was effective or not is not the case, extending you arm with a closed fist toward a player on the ground is not a sanctioned action by the IRB in any rugby game, whether it was effective or not.
15 Nov 2012, 10:48 am
@LITELOCK-71: good point
15 Nov 2012, 10:54 am
Many people are taking issue with the penalty handed out to Adam. If there is a bias shown to New Zealand, people should take it up with the IRB. Seriously guys, if the role was reversed and the Springboks constantly benefitted from IRB rulings, how many of you would kick up a fuss? Would you savor a victory any less?
If you’re going to pick a fight, pick the most arrogant nation in world rugby. I’ll give you a hint, they cheated their way through the World Cup quarter finals.
15 Nov 2012, 11:00 am
@MacToogie-72:
The so called punch is on you tube….if you call that a punch then i am at a loss.
Thing is here what i find the real issue is suspending someone in weeks.
Shouldnt you suspend someone for game time instead.
Lets have a look at Morne, he is a fair player and accidentally put on a high shot, what did he get…. a few weeks of and no games were played in that time.
Lets change the rules and suspend for game time.
Thing is change it to 2 weeks for thompson but you would find he was only going to play 1 game for the Kiwis anyways, so no loss.
1 week in thought as first was ok. The scottish said there was nothing in it…they didnt even say anything about the so called punch that you guys are screaming over, which makes you wonder does it not?
15 Nov 2012, 11:01 am
@katman-68:
yeah why not, why dont you twitter it, its a really cool post ……….
15 Nov 2012, 11:07 am
@Hurricane-76: Thanks. It’s cool because it’s true.
15 Nov 2012, 11:21 am
@Dawn-63:
Yip.
15 Nov 2012, 11:27 am
@Te Rangatira-45: Maybe you guys should just ask yourselves why there is an upsurge of resentment.
You have a brilliant team.Cheating & foul play unnecessary.
15 Nov 2012, 11:29 am
I saw this incident. Glad Rob Simmons was banned. Totally uncalled for. What is worse is that the ref didn’t get the number, and he kept his mouth shut knowing what he did.
15 Nov 2012, 11:31 am
@ryecatcher-79:
lol
Its like SA does not do anything wrong.
15 Nov 2012, 11:36 am
@Hurricane-55:
@Te Rangatira-56:
seriously, a typo..?.. is that all you have..?..
15 Nov 2012, 11:36 am
@Hurricane-81: Yes we do.As much a s you guys on the dirty play(AB,s win on the cheating bit).I did not express myself very well.Katman@68 said it better
15 Nov 2012, 11:49 am
@rossoneri-80:
yet you have sweet f/all to say about that ugly farken retallick’s spear on bekker..?..
typical
15 Nov 2012, 11:55 am
@i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-84:
Rosie doesn’t need to say anything about Retalicks tackle.
You SHOUT load enough. ENDLESSLY.
15 Nov 2012, 12:11 pm
@cane-85:
how convenient your local all black friends ‘keep their mouths shut’, knowing what the nz player did….
15 Nov 2012, 12:34 pm
@Hurricane-75:
my issue with the punch is not if it was effective or not but points to his state of mind in that instance and his intent when placing his foot, in my view its not the effect of the action that must be punished so much as the intent behind the action of the offending player. and his intent in those to actions were clear, he just wasnt effective.
i do agree with you on the sanctions, weeks makes no sense whatsoever, what if an Aussie punches a pom this weekend, he gets 8 weeks, he will miss a single game because of the off season.
i believe sanctions should be categorised into severty and a player given a set sanction per instance :
Player: Bakkies
Offence: Foul play Category1 (Headbutt)
Offence Occurance: 1st = 1 game sanction
Player: Bakkies
Offence: Foul play Category1 (shoulder charge)
Offence Occurance: 2nd = 4 game sanction
Player: Bakkies
Offence: Foul play Category1 (shoulder charge)
Offence Occurance: 3rd = 10 game sanction
this **** of “the player showed remorse” and “Lower lever of offence” is bullshit, it allows for interpretation of rules, dont give the sanctioning officer any leeway and this type of **** will be stamped out. his job will be to determine the offence, to determine the amount of occurrences and have a set out sanction, done and dusted.
15 Nov 2012, 12:38 pm
@katman-68:
love the way you put that.
15 Nov 2012, 13:00 pm
@ryecatcher-79:
There has been no upsurge that I have detected.
Saffa’s hate us as much today as they did a year ago.
15 Nov 2012, 13:47 pm
@Brads-89: Was talking worldwide
15 Nov 2012, 19:23 pm
@Brads-89:
Au contraire.
The same bitter news hacks trot out the same bitter whinges at the first opportunity.
Any indiscretion by an AB or NZ rugby supporter anywhere on the planet flicks the switch for perennial all things Kiwi haters like Stephen Jones and Mark Reason.
No change there and no change to the love/hate relationship by ardent non AB supporters.
What has changed is the loss of the all mighty crutch that somehow compensated for their own teams mediocrity. You know the one that started and ended with the choker tag.
Man oh man, that was the sweetest of pills for a lot of folk, which they are still mourning the loss of.
15 Nov 2012, 19:57 pm
@Brads-91: nail on the head..
jealousy begets vindictiveness
inadequacy begets excuse
thus South African rugby
in the days when they were worthy of being thought of as on a par with us, they had people at the head of their organisation who would get on with the job of winning..
but this is the new SA, and the sheeple have bitten at the apple that is conspiracy, and they have swallowed it whole.. take bakkies as an example, his mantra has become one with the propoganda of poor journalism and entitlement..
he repeats it so often that others believe it too…
greyling for example got a very lenient sentence, and his act was much more malicious and submerged in intent…2 weeks for a flying elbow..pffft conspiracy indeed..
thompson should have got longer, end of, so one must question or ask the judicial officer how he came to decide the punishment….but all teams have gripes with the judicial process… take gougerie in the WC final, not even cited, but there was nary a mention of that on these pages..
so all teams cop it, its only those looking for reasons to explain away their mediocrity that make an everest out of it..
15 Nov 2012, 20:16 pm
for all those who continue on about the Bod incident, seems the lions had set the precedent huh?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRZRQI_69OQ
D’arcy wasnt even cited for this spear tackle, but yeah, its only kiwis who get away with it..
what a bunch of soft **** losers you guys are..
15 Nov 2012, 20:41 pm
@poppa69-93: I didn’t even remember that. Guess it got a little lost in the witch hunt for Umaga/Mealamu. Maybe we need to be even more precious than everyone makes out and start talking about conspiracies to “Get the Sheepshagers”
A few other unpunished incidents I can think of
Irish lock (not sure of his name) tries to remove McCaw from a ruck by the face
Rougerie headbutts and gouges McCaw
Cooper knees McCaw in the head
Hartley elbow to McCaw’s face
Powell head highs McCaw
Not to mention no penalty or card for these incidents in front of the ref
Higgenbotham kneeing and headbutting McCaw
Tiquiri spear tackling McCaw
And the lengthy bans for these two
Heaslip gets 2 match ban for knee to McCaw’s head
Greyling gets 1 match ban for flying elbow to McCaw’s face
Oh hang on, these examples are all McCaw so he probably deserved it.
Mate, we continue to post these examples but no one bothers listening.
15 Nov 2012, 23:15 pm
I see more keewee dirty skulldugery has come to the fore with Tamati Ellison being found out for a sneaky “chicken wing” tackle on the Scottish prop…..gotta love these dirty f uks and the plokkers who try and justify it all!!
15 Nov 2012, 23:21 pm
@Brads-91:
Go give yourself a BJ, theres a good fellow!!
Jeez we are talking generally about how it appears that the keewees seem to always get the rub of the green when it comes to the disiplinary hearings. The general concensous is that we desperately need one law for all and consistancy.
This has got f ukall to do with how well the keewees are playing, and I tip my hat to them in that regards, but seriously if you blokes are so fukking blind to the fact that it does not seem fair then quite frankly you are stupid, blind or not willing to listen to what has been said (Not just by Saffa’s). Maybe all of the above??
15 Nov 2012, 23:24 pm
@gonzo-94:
yeah yeah poor old Macaw………..cheating *** needs to learn the offsides rule and the ref’s need to be un brainwashed from that bald keewee k unt who used to run the show, Paddy, and ref to the rules and not be scared to bin the doos.
15 Nov 2012, 23:30 pm
@poppa69-93:
and as for you my little one eyed puppy……..you need to get off your a rse and go check the doors and windows are all secure, shine your boots and earn your $10/hr
16 Nov 2012, 00:37 am
@whatever-97: Good response. Well argued
16 Nov 2012, 01:23 am
@gonzo-99:
Seems to me its the only way you f ukkers understand anything ………too precious or thick to anything else?!
