Colossal impact
20 Nov 2012
Eben Etzebeth had an outstanding first season of professional rugby.
In 2011, Etzebeth played for the University of Cape Town in the Varsity Cup. In 2012, he became a Springbok regular.
The second rower, who turned 21 on 29 October, was a deserved winner of the SA Young Player of the Year award. A product of the WP Rugby Institute, he had no problem making the step up to Super Rugby in February and his selection for the Springboks in June, for the Test series against England, was a no-brainer.
Etzebeth has inevitably drawn comparisons with former Bok lock Bakkies Botha, as both perform an enforcer-type role, but the Stormers lock has a calmness and measured aggression that Botha did not have at the same age.
It’s scary to think how good he could become.

In the new issue of SA Rugby magazine, Saru high performance manager Rassie Erasmus explains why the Botha comparison makes him ‘uncomfortable’, what makes Etzebeth such an imposing player and why he doesn’t believe the youngster will stagnate.
Heyneke Meyer talks about what he likes about Etzebeth, the one thing that worries him about him, and why he came down hard on him following the Nathan Sharpe headbutt.
SA Rugby magazine also asks Etzebeth about his rookie season, the Botha comparison, the Sharpe headbutt, his Test preparations and his toughest opponent.
Also in the new issue:
– Pat Lambie insists he has not been frustrated during his time with the Springboks this year and is happy to play flyhalf or fullback
– The Springbok goal-kickers had failed to transfer their success on the training field to the high-pressure Test arena going into the end-of-year tour
– Central contracts: Why South Africa’s top players must be contracted to Saru and not to their provincial unions
– The Blitzboks made a promising start to the new sevens season
– Former Sharks scrumhalf Rory Kockott has let his rugby do the talking at French club Castres
– Jaque Fourie aims to resurrect his Springbok career in 2015 once he’s fulfilled his Japanese club obligations
– Former Springbok captain John Smit has a new lease on life since moving to Saracens
– Josh Strauss on his move to Glasgow, the possibility of playing for Scotland, and the Lions’ relegation from Super Rugby
– How Western Province beat the odds to win their first Currie Cup in 11 years
– How Alan Solomons revived Eastern Province rugby
– A band of rugby missionaries wants to grow rugby in Africa

Anxious about the game in Adelaide.
Starting to agree with you on AB’s selection as keeper especially with JP not there.
Thami should take the gloves.

@trupisero-113:
Sebago’s are cool. Had a few pairs over the years. Big difference between them and those leather moccasins with the tossels in front.
20 Nov 2012, 11:11 am
@Jeraldjay-102:
In recent years, yes. Although I suppose that’s based more on their performances this season compared to last year.

@Brigadier Van Zyl-114:
I saw someone wearing those on the beach the other day. Black ones with socks on the sand! I don’t understand. Next to crocs, grasshoppers win the prize as the ugliest shoes ever.

@Brigadier Van Zyl-115:
They are metrosexuals.
We leave the homosexuals to play rugby in pink. I believe they play up north somewhere.
20 Nov 2012, 11:14 am
@Brigadier Van Zyl-109: No Brig, sorry.
@trupisero-110: Indeed. We run that as a December special down here. (Sometimes into January, but stocks are usually kaput by the 21 Dec) We try to throw in a “Billabong” or “O’Neill” wallet as well as it seems to keep the visitors happy.
20 Nov 2012, 11:15 am
@Brigadier Van Zyl-115: Those aren’t Capetonians you silly man. Those are our visitors from KZN.
20 Nov 2012, 11:16 am
@rossoneri-118: Sheeeeeeeez, tell me about it! Cruelty to feet. Surprised no-one has made more of a noise about this abuse.

The Bulls on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of Victor Matfield as their new Forwards and Attack Coach for the 2013 Vodacom Super Rugby season, while also naming Derick Hougaard as a skills and kicking coach and Handrè Pollard as part of their extended playing squad for the new season.
First Van Graan as Boks’ forwards coach and attacking coach and now Victor with the Bulls. Is this the new way to go ? Forwards coach and attack coach the same person ?
20 Nov 2012, 11:22 am
@trupisero-123: And a potjie of *** wax (that most of the visitors end up rubbing on their dangly bits in lieu of their rented surfboards….)
Gives a whole new meaning to wax on, wax off
20 Nov 2012, 11:23 am
@CharlesM-124: ATTACK COACH? ***ofmyfuckingsoul***. No wonder Victor on Saturday was raving about van Graan as an attack coach
All Victor does is talk about kicking though…..poor Bulls.
20 Nov 2012, 11:23 am
@CharlesM-124:
It is if you expect your centres to be loose forwards.
20 Nov 2012, 11:23 am
@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food-125: s – e – x wax
20 Nov 2012, 11:25 am
@CharlesM-124:
Surely the backline coach should be the attack coach.
20 Nov 2012, 11:26 am
@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food-126: I was about to mention that. Naas said something to which Victor reacted: “No Naas, I have to differ ………”. I can’t recall the exact topic but it was built around the “attacking” play of the Boks.
20 Nov 2012, 11:28 am
Pine Pienaar now promoted to S15 defense coach
Victor finished at Supersport though
20 Nov 2012, 11:28 am
@Jeraldjay-129: @CharlesM-130: The Bulls have just taken 3 steps back. 3 Steps they can’t afford IMHO. Forwards coach – sure. Attack coach? – insano.

@Jeraldjay-129: I don’t see any backline coach mentioned but I agree with you !! Big problems if there is no backline coach
20 Nov 2012, 11:31 am
@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food-125: lol…when I was a laaitie I used to work in a sports shop during the xmas holidays. One year had this innocent boeremeisie help out. Surfer came in and asked her for se.x wax and she had no inkling what it was.
Blushing like a tomato she promptly informed him he was better off looking for it at the pharmacy next door
20 Nov 2012, 11:32 am
@CharlesM-134:
Won’t Slapchips automatically keep his post?
20 Nov 2012, 11:32 am
@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food-132: Obviously Victor has built up a lot of knowledge over time. Therefore IMO it was the correct way to go by appointing him as lineout specialist. To go from that to forwards as well as attack coach in such a short period of time is ludicrous
20 Nov 2012, 11:32 am
@Jeraldjay-129: backline is only there to tackle and chase kicks remember?
20 Nov 2012, 11:35 am
@nortierd-136: Maybe it should be, but his name isn’t mentioned in the statement. I’ll be quite peeved off if I were Slaptjips. Rossouw is busy with his IRB Level 3 coaching course – he started it last year as far as I can recall – and to be replaced (if it is the case) by Victor (I don’t think he has any coaching qualification) as attack coach is simply wrong !!
20 Nov 2012, 11:36 am
@trupisero-138: How could we forget that – my bad !!
20 Nov 2012, 11:36 am
@CharlesM-133: I’m guessing these are only the NEW appointments? I don’t see Slaptjips name there either, so possibly he is just staying on as backline coach?
No change there?
If he is leaving…..wellllllll, they in seriaaas sh y te.
@trupisero-135: Oh man. That is collapse on the floor in a heap of hysterical laughter sh y te right there
20 Nov 2012, 11:37 am
@nortierd-136: sorry didn’t see this before I posted. I read this the same way you do.
20 Nov 2012, 11:37 am
@CharlesM-139: Neither is Ludeke’s….I assume these are new signings only
20 Nov 2012, 11:38 am
@CharlesM-139:
yep, but Ludeke’s name also isn’t mentioned, so I thought they are a given.
He hasn’t done anything wrong, and they fought to keep him when HM was recruiting his chommas for Bok support staff.
If they didn’t let him go then, why now?
20 Nov 2012, 11:41 am
@trupisero-135: Next to the little tubs of elbow grease?
20 Nov 2012, 11:43 am
@trupisero-143: @nortierd-144: Yes I didn’t think of that. Still, Rossouw can’t be comfortable with Vic being the attack coach IMO
20 Nov 2012, 11:44 am
@CharlesM-146: Why don’t you read the article from which you C&P the names?
20 Nov 2012, 11:51 am
@Beertjie-147: I have done so. Did I miss something ?? (Apart from the fact that Ludeke is happy about the new appointments)

speaking of coaching roles, how would we define a guy like this one? we know Ian Foster is the Backline coach…
Mick Byrne renewed his six-year relationship with
the All Blacks in Wellington on Wednesday,
again joining forces with head coach Steve
Hansen to assist with technical work around
the lineout, restarts, highball, catching,
kicking and attack lines
