England 15 Springboks 16
24 Nov 2012
GARETH DUNCAN brought you live commentary from the Test in London.
FULL TIME: ENGLAND 15 SPRINGBOKS 16
80 mins: Boks win the ball and Hougaard boots the ball into touch. SPRINGBOKS WIN 16-15!
79 mins: From the restart, England replacement lock Mouritz Botha loses the ball into touch. The Boks need to hold on.
78 mins: ENGLAND PENALTY! With just two minutes to go, England win a penalty on the 22m line. They opt to go to posts instead of kicking for posts. Farrell converts. SPRINGBOKS LEAD 16-15!
74 mins: Lambie boots the restart directly out. England then win a penalty at the midfield scrum. Not going well for the Boks.
72 mins: ENGLAND PENALTY! Farrell converts his second penalty to reduce the deficit to four points. SPRINGBOKS LEAD 16-12!
71 mins: Boks are making needless errors in their own red zone. First a kick straight into touch, before an early engagement at the scrum. Louw then concedes a penalty for competing off his feet.
66 mins: Springboks attacking with smart initiative. Lambie finds Pietersen with an accurate chip. But the Boks are dominated at the tackle point by England’s physical forwards.
60 mins: ENGLAND PENALTY! England replacement flyhalf Owen Farrell slots his first points of the game after Vermeulen is pinned for an illegal steal. SPRINGBOKS LEAD 16-9!
58 mins: Both teams building some good attacking momentum, but inability to hold onto the ball proves costly.
52 mins: Boks work their way towards the tryline and are 8m out. But Tuilagi intercepts a loose pass and starts a counter-attack that breaks into the Bok 22m area. But the tourists’ defence holds up and turnover possession.
48 mins: England break after winning possession from an up and under. Outside centre Manu Tuilagi runs through Lambie, but De Villiers makes a crucial ankle tap on the England hardman. Ben Youngs knocks on the ball from the next breakdown, and Boks escape.
47 mins: Big scuffle off the ball as Ben Youngs and Etzebeth get involved in a tussle. England pack all go for Etzebeth after the whistle before the Boks come to his rescue.
44 mins: SPRINGBOK TRY! Fortunate ricochet for the Boks as flank Willem Alberts scores one of the craziest tries of the year. England defend the rolling maul well. From the next phase, Kruger leaves the ball behind him, England hack the ball through but Pietersen charges down. The ball falls into Alberts’ arms, who bashes over. Lambie converts. SPRINGBOKS LEAD 16-6!
42 mins: Boks spread the ball wide and are awarded a penalty near far touchline. Skipper Jean de Villiers turns down the goal attempt and opts for the kick to touch.
41 mins: Lambie restarts, and England make a mess of it. They lose the ball forward, and South Africa have an early scrum.
HALF-TIME: ENGLAND 6 SPRINGBOKS 9
40 mins: Boks continue to struggle at the scrums, as England force another penalty. The ball is booted into touch and Owens blows for the break.
32 mins: Both teams employ the boot, until England manage to put together an effective counter-attack. Flood, 7m from the tryline, puts in a chip ahead, but the ball goes dead. Boks escape.
29 mins: BIG HIT! Pietersen gets a massive tackle on England inside centre Brad Barritt. The midfielder stays down. Perfect timing from the speedster.
25 mins: SPRINGBOK PENALTY! Easy pickings for Lambie as he slots his third three-pointer. SPRINGBOKS LEAD 9-6!
24 mins: The Springboks enjoy their best period of attacking play. They work their way closer to the England red zone, and the hosts buckle as they concede a penalty. It’s right in front of the posts.
20 mins: GREAT DEFENCE! England run 20 phases against the Boks, but struggle to gain ground. No 8 Duane Vermeulen then forces the penalty with a great steal at the tackle point.
18 mins: England’s dominance at the scrum continues as the Boks are forced back. However, Flood misses from a kickable position.
17 mins: Owens warns both front rows that he’ll reach for his yellow card if the scrum doesn’t improve.
14 mins: SPRINGBOK PENALTY! The Springboks force a scrum straight after the restart, as lock Juandre Kruger and flank Francois Louw hold up the ball. England dominate the scrum, but skipper Chris Robshaw releases from an offside position. Lambie converts. SCORES ARE LEVEL AT 6-6!
12 mins: ENGLAND PENALTY! Flood converts from an easy angle. ENGLAND LEAD 6-3!
11 mins: England get the put in to the first scrum down after wing JP Pietersen fails to take in an up and under. Springbok tighthead prop Jannie du Plessis is then penalised by Owens. Another chance for Flood.
9 mins: SPRINGBOK PENALTY! Lambie’s first effort is from a difficult angle, but a sweet strike sees the ball sail over the cross bar. SCORE IS LEVEL AT 3-3!
8 mins: Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth steals the ball at an England lineout, and the visitors are on the front foot. They are awarded a penalty several phases later after the hosts infringed illegally at the breakdown.
5 mins: ENGLAND PENALTY! Flood gets it on target on his second attempt. ENGLAND LEAD 3-0!
4 mins: Wing Mike Brown surges into the Springbok red zone after a poor Pienaar box kick. The hosts work their way closer to the chalk, but a poor pass from scrumhalf Ben Youngs sees England lose the ball forward. However, referee Nigel Owens blows for a penalty as he played advantage.
2 mins: Flood gets an early shot at goal, but misses.
KICK-OFF: England flyhalf Toby Flood’s kick-off goes deep, and No 8 Duane Vermeulen takes it in cleanly. However, scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar’s box kick is charged down and pivot Pat Lambie, who covers up, is put under pressure. England milk the penalty as South Africa are penalised for illegal clearing.

Days like these I miss Ricky Januarie.
24 Nov 2012, 16:59 pm
Is Pienaar trying to be our new Flyhalf? No seriously, I think this dude is trying to convince Meyer that he can play flyhalf. How else do you explain of this kicks of his? Lambie should have taken that penalty kick.

Owens on a mission to screw Boks at every scrum.
24 Nov 2012, 17:02 pm
@papaown-121: You can say that again.
24 Nov 2012, 17:03 pm
Pienaar likes playing behind the scrum cos he stays more or less out of the heavy action. No mega tackling to face in the backline or forwards.
24 Nov 2012, 17:03 pm
@Slumtown-124: like in the backline or forwards
24 Nov 2012, 17:03 pm
@Amerifikaner-93: vipbox
24 Nov 2012, 17:03 pm
Bobby must stop talking kak about Vermeulen’s tackles. All the tackling back has been done by Alberts today.
24 Nov 2012, 17:04 pm
Vok
Short lineouts
24 Nov 2012, 17:04 pm
Stupid lineout.
24 Nov 2012, 17:05 pm
@gunther-129: You expect the Valke to try that when they run out of ideas against the Bulldogs.
24 Nov 2012, 17:05 pm
that was a sa ball in touch
24 Nov 2012, 17:05 pm

24 Nov 2012, 17:05 pm

24 Nov 2012, 17:07 pm
Guthro slipping off tackles already…its only the 30th minute
24 Nov 2012, 17:07 pm
Nigel missing forward passes too
How old is he?
24 Nov 2012, 17:07 pm
Corbisero’s left shoulder must be 20cm lower than his right. He can’t scrum straight for sh*t!
24 Nov 2012, 17:08 pm
@katman-130:
Emboerrit really.
Our lineout is dominant and we throw it to the jelly baby who falls over and loses the ball. Like a turtle on its back.
JPP destroys Barritt.
24 Nov 2012, 17:10 pm
Boks standing about like they not expecting the ball – pfff
24 Nov 2012, 17:10 pm
How the fck did Hougaard not hang onto that intercept?
24 Nov 2012, 17:11 pm
eben 2 – launchbury 0
24 Nov 2012, 17:11 pm
Alberts also slippin off tackles…33 minutes passed only. These guys are costing us man
24 Nov 2012, 17:11 pm
Sheesh, Pumas look so disinterested, it beggars belief. 6 tries to zero, 12-39 already.
24 Nov 2012, 17:12 pm
total mess of a game – bloody awful stuff from Boks and England – though England look more structured.
24 Nov 2012, 17:12 pm
Strauss having quieter game I’d be tempted to bring on Britz
24 Nov 2012, 17:12 pm
@katman-142: Since he is not a forward, he was shocked the ball was in his hands. You can’t seriously expect a backline player in the SA squad to handle the trauma of actually having ball in hand!
24 Nov 2012, 17:12 pm
Vermeulen has saved the boks twice with steals at ruck time.
24 Nov 2012, 17:12 pm
while Italy is just one try away, 16-22.
