Hore set for hefty ban
26 Nov 2012
New Zealand hooker Andrew Hore has been cited for an off-the-ball incident which subsequently hospitalised Wales lock Bradley Davies.
Hore hit Davies off the ball during the initial stages of last Saturday’s Test in Cardiff. The incident was missed by matchday officials, but Hore has now been cited and looks likely to receive a lengthy suspension.
The time and date of the hearing, before the IRB’s appointed independent judicial officer, have yet to be fixed.
All Blacks coach Steve Hansen expects the hooker to be sidelined for some time. Hansen did not say as much, but has already called for a replacement ahead of the coming Test against England.
Dane Coles is expected to start at Twickenham.

@stormersboy-7397:
I’d second that team.
3 Dec 2012, 21:56 pm
@gunther-7389:
yeah… just wouldn’t let any bowler think he could hurt him… 17 years and no helmet… tough man…
@willievz-7391:
yeah bud… the stats paint a different picture as i said… and not always the full picture as you pointed out with sachin…
to me viv is must… i posted the above to show how many other cricket legends rated him… so not just my opinion…
and of course we can all find other legends who rate our favourites…
to me viv epitomisedthe swashbuckling fearless batsmen of boys own books…
but seriously… see fires of babylon if you can… of course it’s not just about viv… but gives a good snapshot of what he was in cricket…
@gunther-7392:
very cool indeed… in sa or the windies…?
3 Dec 2012, 21:57 pm
I see Carter has win the IRB player of the year award.
The greatest 10 of all time.
Though it would have been nice to see what Naas might have achieved.
3 Dec 2012, 21:58 pm
@ufo-7402:
Zoo York!

@gunther-7404:
ah-ha…

Selecting fast bowlers is even more difficult as they tend to hunt in pairs, with one complementing the other. Larwood/Barnes, Trueman/Statham, Lillee/Thompson, Pollock/Proctor, Proctor/Donald, Proctor/Steyn, Walsh/Ambrose. Then you have Garner, Marshal, Holding and Clarke from the WI. Waqar Younis and Akram from Pakistan. Hadlee from NZ.
All of them would be in line for a best world 11 ever.
3 Dec 2012, 22:02 pm
@gunther-7403:
yeah… if my life was on the line… i’d choose naas…
but dan obviously a legend still in the making…
3 Dec 2012, 22:02 pm
@gunther-7403:
Imagine Naas playing today with the opposing flankers forced to stay bound.
Rob Louw used to line up opposite him and still couldn’t catch him.

@ufo-7405:
My parents were perceived as persona non grata in DA at the time.
3 Dec 2012, 22:03 pm
@nortierd-7401: Thanks. To me based as much on my preferences of players that I really enjoyed watching.
You could probably pick 4 World teams and still have so many left.
3 Dec 2012, 22:04 pm
SA
3 Dec 2012, 22:05 pm
@David-7406:
Now in SA they hunt as triplets.
Dos you see the huddle Morne Vern and Dake got into immediately after the game.
Very telling.
3 Dec 2012, 22:06 pm
@nortierd-7408:
intriguing….
maybe one day can hear more from the gunther’s mouth… or the hore-ses mouth…
3 Dec 2012, 22:06 pm
@ufo-7402: Stats is not the full picture, but there are enough context for me in the low conversion rate of 50s into 100s.
Food for thought – how would his stats have looked if he faced his own bowling attack?
My gut says it would be less, marginalising him into the higher 40s…
3 Dec 2012, 22:07 pm
@gunther-7409:
sorry gunther that was for you… obviously…
intriguing….
maybe one day can hear more from the gunther’s mouth… or the hore-ses mouth…
3 Dec 2012, 22:09 pm
@David-7406:
On a flat track Wasim. Waqar and Curtly would do the most damage.
3 Dec 2012, 22:09 pm
@stormersboy-7410: Bradman is the only player that picks himself.
And, perhaps, Gilchrist.
Then you can argue about the spinner. Only two to pick from. Or pick both.
And the allrounder. Kallis or Sobers. Or pick both.
The rest, including the pace attack, are subject to a worthy debate.
3 Dec 2012, 22:10 pm
@stormersboy-7410:
True, but you got the perfect mix.
Great established openers, a middle order that would kill anyone, best keeper/batsman, ultimate all rounder, and the bowlers would go through most teams.
Pretty much spot on
3 Dec 2012, 22:10 pm
it gets from seriously banal to godforsaken an’al
is there zero light shining between the cortex’s of these limp lobotomized lavatory trained brains?
what kind of a useless inverted virtual pub is this sh’t hole anyway?
you wouldn’t find a yank seen dead playing this hopeless incarnation of stiff upper lipped excuses for a so called sporting code.. you wouldn’t find any reasonably evolved creature doing so either.. so its no wonder only the mad dogs and their offspring find any solace at smacking a wound up leather clad ball of cork with a plank of willow wood for afternoon tea time frolicking in the midday barmy bloody colonial setting sun..
3 Dec 2012, 22:12 pm
@Jeraldjay-7416:
Waqar’s 5/25 against SA in an ODI in Durban, 1992, made a huge impact on me. First guy to consistently clock 150 km/h
I did not see Ambrose’s 7/1 at the WACA but that must surely rank as one of the greatest fast bowling displays ever.
3 Dec 2012, 22:13 pm
Speaking of great West Indians we can’t ignore Contrad Hunte.
One of the finest human beings to walk the earth.
3 Dec 2012, 22:14 pm
@willievz-7420: Waqar is my favourite paceman ever. I picked Wasim as he was a perfect contrast to him, they were the scourge of batsmen everywhere.
3 Dec 2012, 22:14 pm
@ufo-7415:
Not here.
Toomany windowlickers.
3 Dec 2012, 22:15 pm
@nortierd-7418: Thanks
3 Dec 2012, 22:16 pm
@stormersboy-7422: Probably my favourite too.
3 Dec 2012, 22:17 pm
@willievz-7414:
i understand bud… but think you may be fixating on one stat to the exclusion of all else…
think he would have done great against his own attack… as he played them in domestic cricket all the time to rise to the top anyway…
and as in that wiki copy… was considered by many to be the best ever player or genuine fast bowling…
but not to stress… you’re not obliged to rate him… or select him… though i would pick him every time…
but perhaps i’m guilty of over-romantising him… but as i said… he just epitomises everything about how strong and tough and brave and attacking and explosive a batsmen should be…
also have to remember he was real team man and would do what is best for the team and not his own stats… if that meant tanking it to get close and lose his wicket so be it…
jaques on the other hand has long been labelled as worrying too much about his own stats over the team cause… (not saying i agree with that… certainly not recently… but just to illustrate the point)
3 Dec 2012, 22:18 pm
@gunther-7423:
yeah of course… meant elsewhere… but understand if you’d rather not… no hard feelings at all…
3 Dec 2012, 22:19 pm
Since a lot of this debate has focused on all rounders there was a very interesting article the other day on the death of the genuine all rounder in modern cricket because the schedule and format doesn’t allow it.
Is Kallis the last great all rounder?
3 Dec 2012, 22:19 pm
@skopdiekan-7419:
Yeah, the Yanks are to busy playing rounders, oh excuse me, baseball against themselves under the guise of calling it a World Series.
No one else in the world cares to join them, hence they play against themselves.
3 Dec 2012, 22:19 pm
@ufo-7426: I’m a big Viv Richards fan, he just epitomized the whole Calypso Cricket thing that turned the game into something new and fresh.
3 Dec 2012, 22:20 pm
@gunther-7412:
The Windies hunted in fours at their height. Generally, though it’s a 2 man combo. Kirsten got the balance right when he chose Steyn and Vernon to open, instead of Morkel.
3 Dec 2012, 22:20 pm
@ufo-7426: Fair dues. Never saw him play so I can, but mainly, go on the stats and the message behind the stats.
However, after reading your romantic account, I am very tempted to pick him ahead of Tendulkar, but that in itself will open up another can of worms
I have put Fires of Babylon on my watchlist, will report in due course
3 Dec 2012, 22:20 pm
@stormersboy-7422:
If you pick Ambrose you also pick Walsh, same with Waquar and Wassim.
3 Dec 2012, 22:20 pm
@gunther-7421:
had the honour of meeting him when he came to sa in the early noughties…
a great human being indeed…!!
3 Dec 2012, 22:22 pm
@willievz-7420:
Wasim and Waqar in swinging yorkers at the death added a new dimension to ODI’s.
Don’t know whether the bottle caps in their pockets had anything to do with it.
3 Dec 2012, 22:23 pm
@Jeraldjay-7435: Haha!!
3 Dec 2012, 22:24 pm
@stormersboy-7430:
He was actually the last of the Windies calypso players, unfortunately.
3 Dec 2012, 22:25 pm
@ufo-7434:
Also a good family friend.
Did a huge amount for SA Cricket.
3 Dec 2012, 22:26 pm
@Jeraldjay-7435:
Lol, as long as it was Pepsi caps the sponsors were happy, heaven forbid they should use a coke cap in an ICC sponsored event
3 Dec 2012, 22:26 pm
@stormersboy-7430:
yeah… the windies turned the cricketing establishment on it’s head and were largely responsible for it attracting new fans over a more global area…
willie… rather like if griquas strung together a few great seasons and won the super15…
@willievz-7432:
and neither should you take my word for it…
yeah… who to leave out is always the hardest call…
the easy call for me is to have viv in my team…
will be interesting to hear what you think after that…
3 Dec 2012, 22:27 pm
@gunther-7438:
oh wow… even more impressive…
yes he did… i met him while he was doing some of that work…
3 Dec 2012, 22:28 pm
@David-7431:
Yes indeed.
This is the closest thing I have seen since,
What I like about it is sometimes its Steyn and Vern and sometimes Morkel and Vern depending on their opposition.
3 Dec 2012, 22:30 pm
@David-7437: speaking of Calypso players two of my faves were Richie Rich and Carl Hooper.
Even thought they didn’t have the same stats Carl was one of the most elegant players to ever wield the willow.
3 Dec 2012, 22:31 pm
@nortierd-7429: baseball is more exciting than skittle sticks ask any Cuban or Puerto Rican or Japanese kid
I couldn’t take to either game much but if I had to choose baseball is far more exciting and perhaps even skillful than googly gummy drops skittle sticks
how do the colonialist countries pretend to have a CWC when only the British colonies were even vaguely familiar with the sport?
At least rugby has grown slightly beyond those limits.. but skittle sticks is laced with gin and tonic till it gets buried in its own willow stick ashes someday.
Frisby or chuck the boomerang is more exciting than skittle sticks and so is volleyball badminton tennis ping pong and snooker .. well according to my warped sense of skill set values at least
