Hore set for hefty ban

Hore set for hefty ban

New Zealand hooker Andrew Hore has been cited for an off-the-ball incident which subsequently hospitalised Wales lock Bradley Davies.

Hore hit Davies off the ball during the initial stages of last Saturday’s Test in Cardiff. The incident was missed by matchday officials, but Hore has now been cited and looks likely to receive a lengthy suspension.

The time and date of the hearing, before the IRB’s appointed independent judicial officer, have yet to be fixed.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen expects the hooker to be sidelined for some time. Hansen did not say as much, but has already called for a replacement ahead of the coming Test against England.

Dane Coles is expected to start at Twickenham.

    Morning Charles
    Read in the latest SA Rugby that Jonny is trying to make the B & I Lions squad one more time.

    @nortierd-18651: howzit Nortie!
    But there has to be a reason for Claassens not wanting to play with Jonny. Therefore IMO there must be a “valid” reason, but who knows……

    @BrumbiesBoy-18649:
    Yup. That’s why ruggaworld was started, to bridge the gap. I suppose even the Keo team need a break to identify their victims and policies for next year.

    BTW I had an interesting discussion with somebody close to Rassie. It seems the latter is a bit frustrated – no guessing why !!
    Apparently HM does not want to pick the smaller guys (no surprises there either!! – as if we haven’t noticed!).

    Fortunately for Rassie, he is involved with the other national teams as well. Apparently in the long run, Rassie as director of rugby will be able to replace the national coach(es) if he / they don’t perform.
    Obviously he’ll have to follow the correct procedures etc and “it will not be easy to get rid of anybody”

  • 18657.nortierd: Reply to this comment

    @CharlesM-18654:
    That’s a pretty subjective viewpoint.
    What is considered ” smaller”?
    Does he go on length, weight etc. as opposed to what a player can bring to the table?
    Very shortsighted if you ask me.
    Aplon may not tick the former boxes, but he doesn’t shirk defensive responsibilities and offers something else on attack.
    I guess contesting the high ball can be an issue, but not much else wrong with what he does.
    A lot will depend on the Stormers attack this year and if the backline can function better than last year and manage to score more tries, then it might be hard to stick to that argument.

  • 18658.CharlesM: Reply to this comment

    @nortierd-18657: We’re on the same page Nortie – and it seems Rassie feels the same!!
    I hope he can convince HM but I’m not sure that he’s open for a “change of mind”. Remember what HM said about only having a plan A and no need for plan B because it won’t be necessary if plan A is executed well!

    @CharlesM-18658:
    I wonder how Flouw fitted into his original Plan A?
    He has a tough year ahead of him, does HM, and it will be interesting to see how we fare in the Championship. That will be the only real test, no disrespect to Scotland and Samoa implied, but the All Blacks are the only measure at this stage.

  • 18660.David: Reply to this comment

    @nortierd-18659:
    I reckon Flo fitted in quite well. He’s a 7 who is adept at the fetching role as well as with ball in hand. In other words, a perfect HM 6.

  • 18661.nortierd: Reply to this comment

    @David-18660:
    Fair enough, but he wasn’t originally on the cards.
    He doesn’t rate Brussouw and wasn’t interested in a fetcher in the beginning.
    He wanted big guys to carry and when that didn’t work he changed his mind.
    Not that Flouw is a lightweight, but still a fetcher.
    At least it shows that he is willing to admit it if he is wrong and then address the shortcoming.

  • 18662.CharlesM: Reply to this comment

    @David-18660: Hi David, yes Flo did extremely well! It will take a huge effort by any of the returning injured Boks to replace him. IMO he has cemented his place.
    BTW he took a lineout ball or 2 as well.

  • 18663.CharlesM: Reply to this comment

    @nortierd-18661: I agree: initially Brussouw wasn’t part of his plans but during the end of the season when he mentioned all the injured players, Brussouw was on “his injury list” as well.
    Having said that, I am not saying that Brussouw is closer to the team but at least he is mentioning him!

  • 18664.willievz: Reply to this comment

    @nortierd-18659: The ABs are certainly the real deal.

    I agree that Flo should be the frontronner for the 6.

    But bear in mind that Brussow has never lost to the ABs. He should, at a minimum, be the backup 6, and on the bench ahead of Coetzee.

  • 18665.David: Reply to this comment

    @nortierd-18661:
    When you consider that Marcell was HMs first choice at 1.91m and 106kg, Flo at 1.88m and 112kg fits HMs physical requirements. Flo is more a thief/ball slower than an outright fetcher or breakaway 6.

  • 18666.nortierd: Reply to this comment

    @willievz-18664:
    I agree with you.
    He has never let the Boks down.
    However, if HM is not a fan, then it’s over for him, and I get the impression that he isn’t a fan.

    @David-18653: Thanks, that name rings a bell somewhere, will have a look there.

    BTW, I thought I’d share this with you… ;-) please don’t tell anybody but I noticed a glaring grammatical omission by Jake in an article on the Brumbies’ website the other day: “….I would just like thank all the supporters…”

    Oooo, I cringed…

  • 18668.CharlesM: Reply to this comment

    18664. Hi Willie – I agree. It’s interesting to look back at Flo’s rise to the Boks. Before the RWC of 2011 Flo wasn’t part of PdV’s plans but after Brussouw’s brilliant game against the All Blacks in PE, with Flo already in Bath, they realised the importance of a fetcher. Only then was Flo picked for the Boks.
    Initially HM also didn’t rate him that highly but fortunately he has seen the light !!

  • 18669.nortierd: Reply to this comment

    @David-18665:
    What bothers me is HM’s equivalent of musical chairs, but with players.
    Then one is in, then out, then on the bench then off the squad.
    IMO he did Elton Jantjies a disservice by giving him a sympathy cap.
    The kid is young enough to have gone abroad and qualified for a country that might actually have wanted him.
    Now he is stuffed internationally.

  • 18670.willievz: Reply to this comment

    @CharlesM-18668: Hi Charles, hope you are well.

    Not sure if Flo wasn’t part of the plan. Remember that PDV picked him against Wales in 2010, at openside, where he was outstanding in tandem with another debutant, Dewald Potgieter.

    He then picked Flo again against the ABs in 3N 2010, at blindside, in tandem with Schalk. Flo struggled in that game, and got cast aside until the 2011 WC.

    I also reckon the whole Bath-overseas-thing had something to do with his total exclusion from the squad.

    IMO he was a class selection for the 2011 WC, ahead of other fetchers such as Stegmann. In fact, the 2011 WC squad selection was pretty much bang-on, IMO.

    I think part of Flo’s difficulties (which, ironically, now counts in his favour) was that, at the Stormers prior to his Bath excursion, he was always playing an openside game in the blindside position. He would assist the tackler in the fetch as the second person arriving at the breakdown, whereas other fetchers made the tackle, got back on their feet, and contested.

    Remember that the breakdown laws were interpreted slightly different in 2009.

    The long and the short is that both Brussow and Flo possess an important skill and should add significant value to any Bok squad.

    I doubt whether HM saw the light so much as having run out of options locally.

  • 18672.willievz: Reply to this comment

    @David-18671: I tend to agree with that statement.

  • 18673.CharlesM: Reply to this comment

    @David-18671: I can’t disagree with that David. I was merely speaking about Flo’s position “only”.

    Willie, yes Flo left for Bath at the time because he thought that he had no future in the Bok team.

  • 18674.willievz: Reply to this comment

    @CharlesM-18673: It was effectively a vicious circle.

    He left Bath as he fell out of favour.
    And he also fell down the pecking order even further whilst at Bath.

  • 18675.willievz: Reply to this comment

    By the way

    I hope Flo has proved to the Southern Hemisphere purists that overseas-based players can add significant value to a national squad regardless of their playing geography.

  • 18676.willievz: Reply to this comment

    What really disappoints me about Meyer are quotes like the following:

    “It was a tough year for us. We lost around 10 players after the World Cup last year and another 10 through injury”.

    By making such a statement, he assumes from the outset that the old stalwarts would have made a benign difference to the team performance.

    And yet the modern era shows us that many players are now at their peak in their early 20s, and can play for national sides at 20.

    Add to this the fact that someone like Victor Matfield has only won a test in NZ twice over a career of c. a decade.

    Jake White had the same problem in 2004 but ended up winning the 3N in his first season in charge. With star player Schalk Burger 21 years old.

    Young players are more mature, more informed, better tactically and technially, and – most importantly – physically stronger at a young age than players of yesteryear.

    the adherents to this type of warped thinking don’t consider things like loss of form etc…in 2008 most of the world cup winners were either injured or hopelessly off-form.
