Hore set for hefty ban
26 Nov 2012
New Zealand hooker Andrew Hore has been cited for an off-the-ball incident which subsequently hospitalised Wales lock Bradley Davies.
Hore hit Davies off the ball during the initial stages of last Saturday’s Test in Cardiff. The incident was missed by matchday officials, but Hore has now been cited and looks likely to receive a lengthy suspension.
The time and date of the hearing, before the IRB’s appointed independent judicial officer, have yet to be fixed.
All Blacks coach Steve Hansen expects the hooker to be sidelined for some time. Hansen did not say as much, but has already called for a replacement ahead of the coming Test against England.
Dane Coles is expected to start at Twickenham.

What an absolute farce. And why is the WBA so quiet on this? Did they or did they not sanction the fight? If they did they should call the fight a no-contest as this ‘title’ fight didn’t go the 12 rounds. And poor sports the TAB for not doing what their Aussie counterparts did by refunding the punters. As for SBW, could’ve been a great All Black but will probably end up with the legacy of an untrustworthy opportunist with nil credibilty. Sad.

The sooner that SBW sacks his management (I am not sure that is the right word given their ability for mismanagement) team the better off he will be. Even dimwitted Choc Mundine has realised how suss they are.
Still no matter how low SBW sinks in his quest for boxing glory he does have the best offload ever seen in rugby so no doubt we will welcome him back regardless.

Hilarious. Even if it’s a cheat’s game, that boxing comedy is still very funny. If you ever catch me betting on any fix(ture) involving SBW or his manager, please call the police and lock me up.

Well they say the art of comedy is all in the timing, and this non event was brazen, given it was clearly a set up, and coming within a day of the announcement of widespread match fixing and organised crime across Australian sport. Of course with that as the talking point, no one could take this event seriously.
As for the dodgy outcome, I said last year that SBW will never lose a fight; his paymasters cannot afford for him to be seriously hurt in the ring, after all he training for footy tomorrow. This is why he will never face a proper boxer, or relinquish his belt if ever called on to defend it against a proper boxer. Clearly in this fight, once it was looking like he might kiss the canvass the game was over.
This event gave us everything to support why there is an investigation across Australia’s sporting landscape of corruption, match fixing and organised crime. There is no better example out there.

Botha should have won, no doubt about it, anyone could see that. SBW should just stick with what he does best, rugby league and leave the boxing to the professionals.

I have been a great supporter of S.B.W. UNTIL NOW…why don’t you and your manager set up a travelling circus .The main act would be accompanied by the great music of “”SEND IN THE CLOWNS.
Come to think of it they already have ducking from union, league, boxing.

NZ Herald report in the fight “SBW wins Thriller – Sonny Bill Williams proved his boxing credentials…”. Your column starts by saying “The Sonny Bill Williams fight turned out to be a bit dodgy, like nobody knew that his boxing career was a crock of you know what in the first place”.
I agree with you but someone in your office clearly thinks SBW fight was a thriller in which he proved his boxing credentials. Headlines like the one on Saturday night gives mugs the impression that they were watching a “title fight” and not a WWF style show. You guys need to start reporting Sonny-Bill under entertainment and not sports. Your assisting with the confusion.

I feel embarrassed for watching the ‘fight’. Money Bill’s hanger ons are a bunch of criminals and delusional egomaniacs. The whole thing is a disgrace to boxing, sport and the suckers who paid to see this absolute ****. Perhaps the Roosters might shave 10 minutes off a game this year if the other teams making a comeback?
Glad Tua has called him out which will show how cowardly and calculated SBW’s self promotional, marketing bandwagon is. If you’re gonna strut around saying you’re the NZ champ you gotta face someone decent.
It’s always been clear to anyone with half a brain that his boxing career is a farce but this is disgusting. Good riddance loser. You and your wannabe Don King mates are the biggest sporting fraud NZ has seen.

Botha takes jet lag pills to get some sleep before the bout. Then he takes pills to wake himself up just before the bout. His urine sample indicates these pills were illegal. Somehow, I think Botha and his entourage wouldn’t know an illegal drug from an aspirin. Then he trudges into the ring for a 12-round fight, which apparently his own promoter knew was going to be a 10 rounder (if SBW were seen to be in trouble) but “neglected” to tell Botha and his trainer. Likely scenario was that Botha’s promoter for some weird reason gets a mystery man to tell Botha’s trainer that the fight has been cut to 10 rounds with three or four rounds to go. Not sure why the trainer would take the word of a mystery man? So how much of a “mystery” man was he really? Botha then gets the benefit of the “wake up” pills kicking in big time and almost whacks SBW into la la land with some tremendous off loads, some of which were borderline forward. Even the last round was apparently cut short. All in all, I found this all very entertaining – way better than all of the Rocky movies put together. Botha stars as the grizzled has-been and SBW as the young wannabe. Some good movie material for sure.

Thats nice.
i thought it was 12 rounds.
SBW thought it was 12 rounds.
the commentators thought it was 12 rounds.
the judges thought it was 12 rounds.
it was advertised as 12 rounds.
so that makes it botha’s fault? the rest of us weren’t informed of that rather important fact until the 9th round.
if you’re ok with that chain of events, fair enough.

Botha was not full of drugs, that has been brought up to make it look like SBW has more credibility in this fight now, even though its a farce. They made up a drugs scandal to take the pressure and focus off SBW. What a joke of a sport this is. Its terrible to see those managers get away with this situation unchecked. They got paid, and it was millions.
You really don’t know how much they got behind closed doors. Botha is also a show goat, but hes irreverent at this point, as SBW is a known cheat now. He wouldn’t have set up this situation himself at all, but hes the only person to focus on here as “he went along with this farce and said nothing”, he simply collected the cash and ran away from questions, even though he knew it was 12 rounds all along, as he said multiple times to so many people leading up to the fight, even on TV cameras.
What a joke, he should be personally prosecuted actually. I laugh at the fact that in the USA, everyone thinks hes an Aussie, so i guess that’s not so bad then, hahaha, anyhow, the guy is a noddy like no other. He should come forward, fire his manager, and state the truth, and a thing like that will show he has integrity, that will be great.

well said mate, well said. Botha is kind of cool, hes a fun guy, and hes got my respect, a lot of fights, and a hell of a lot of wins, great fighter status. As for SBW, what a total tosser, he can leave this country, oh hang on he did, its nice to know that most people over seas actually think hes from Aussie, hahaha, good stuff eh. Silly guy, to destroy himself so easily, no character at all. noddy status indeed!

Boxing sham casts shame on all involved:
OPINION: “We wuz robbed.”
It’s one of the oldest of boxing’s truisms, and was wearily appropriate to Friday’s fight between Sonny Bill Williams and Francois Botha. Those of us who shelled out $40 are now hurling our seats into the ring, demanding our money back.
Sky TV told us that we would get 12 rounds of championship action. On the night the commentators told us that 12 rounds were scheduled. They told us that six rounds was the halfway stage. They discussed which of the fighters was best placed to go the 12 rounds.
13 Feb 2013, 06:48 am
The Fair Trading Act makes it illegal for traders to mislead customers, give them false information or use unfair trading practices. Well, we the customers were undoubtedly given false information on Friday night and we were given it in very large quantities.
On the undercard a man called Barry Dunnett was knocked out by Quade Cooper at the end of the first round. He is an insurance salesman with almost no pro fighting experience. His job on the night was to fall over and to promote Blue Chip Financial and Strategic Advisers. After the bout Dunnett said: “It would have been nice to make another round and show everyone a real fight, but **** happens.”
13 Feb 2013, 06:48 am
They were the truest words spoken on the night.
Next up was the main event. We should have known the fix was on when Rick Powell, the ring announcer, began to stumble over his words. Had someone been tampering with his notes? Each of the previous five fights had been introduced by mention of the fight length. But suddenly the duration of Sonny Bill’s fight was left unsaid. The garrulous Powell had nothing to utter on the matter.
Did I say Sonny Bill? Not according to Powell. The waxen-haired ringmaster pronounced: “This is our main event broadcast for the WBA International heavyweight title. Let’s now make welcome to the centre ring, no need for major introduction, please welcome Sonny Boy Williams.”
13 Feb 2013, 06:48 am
Sonny Boy? Is he some relation to Sonny Boy Williamson, the blues harmonica player? And what was this WBA International heavyweight title? Surely not an attempt to pass off a toy belt as some sort of heavyweight world championship? Then the cameras panned to Botha, as he made his way into the ring. And what a way it was. To the chords of Bob Marley’s Buffalo Soldier – a historical song about a black African taken from his homeland to America – a white, blond South African bounced from foot to foot in a ghastly simulation of dance.
13 Feb 2013, 06:49 am
At this point we should have at least suspected Botha was on drugs. Or he is according to Khoder Nasser, the manager of SBW. Botha says he’s not on drugs and the positive test was rigged by a Nasser family member or something.
Nasser responded by saying: “The pathology company is a very reputable pathology company.”
13 Feb 2013, 06:49 am
And so to the fight. Did I say fight? It was more like a religious ceremony. During the sermon the commentators, preachers, evangelists, call them what you will, described SBW as, “fresh, amazing, a multi-sport superstar, athletic freak of nature, a superman show, clever, full of heart and intestinal fortitude, wonderful, career-defining, a star, beautiful, very good, confident, brilliant, powerful, perfect, devastating and much, much more.
13 Feb 2013, 06:49 am
This was sport as religion. We were being asked to believe in a false god. And then someone noticed that the god’s knees were a bit wobbly. The ref rushed across and told Williams’ corner it was the last round. With one-and-a-half minutes to go, the announcer said, “30 seconds to go”. Williams was out on his feet. The ref issued a points deduction and Williams conveniently got 10 seconds respite. And still the god was hanging on for grim life.
13 Feb 2013, 06:50 am
Then the bell went, SBW was the champion, the victor, “an amazing performance, an amazing night, an amazing fight”. I guess it was. Botha’s corner called foul. They complained about the ref holding Sonny up and of the fight being shortened. The man with the microphone looked like someone had just pushed dog dirt through his front door. Follow-up question? No chance.
13 Feb 2013, 06:50 am
I frequently stand up for Sky. Much of what it does is first rate. But this was a sham. We, the customers, were misled and given false information. But Sky maintains that, unlike the TAB, its customers will not be refunded.
Sky New Zealand spokeswoman Kirsty Way said: “The way the whole night pans out is out of our control. We delivered to our customers the whole event so there are no issues there. People were a bit surprised about the 10 rounds but it was out of our hands.”
13 Feb 2013, 06:51 am
That is entirely disingenuous. Sir Robert Jones called the fight “seedy, nasty and bogus” and described SBW as “an idiot adrift on a float of publicity”. Well said, Jones. You sound like the white knight that we need. Why not ride in and take on Sky under the Fair Trading Act. You would be doing us all a big favour.
* When contacted this morning Sir Robert said he wouldn’t be taking on Sky.
