Hore set for hefty ban

New Zealand hooker Andrew Hore has been cited for an off-the-ball incident which subsequently hospitalised Wales lock Bradley Davies.

Hore hit Davies off the ball during the initial stages of last Saturday’s Test in Cardiff. The incident was missed by matchday officials, but Hore has now been cited and looks likely to receive a lengthy suspension.

The time and date of the hearing, before the IRB’s appointed independent judicial officer, have yet to be fixed.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen expects the hooker to be sidelined for some time. Hansen did not say as much, but has already called for a replacement ahead of the coming Test against England.

Dane Coles is expected to start at Twickenham.

Boxing: Murky bout no contest in boxing man’s mind

If the World Boxing Association’s main man in Australia had his way, the Sonny Bill Williams-Francois Botha fight would be declared a no-contest.

Brad Vocale, the WBA’s Pan Asian Boxing Association representative, originally doubted the bout was sanctioned by the WBA because of a number of irregularities but now says he understands it was.

“I believe it was,” he said when asked if the fight took place under the official WBA umbrella. “I haven’t spoken to Panama [the WBA head office is based there] directly but I am led to believe the fight was sanctioned. It was approved back in November. Khoder [Khoder Nasser, Sonny Bill Williams' controversial manager] was at the WBA convention, same as me, and he didn’t go through me – he just went to them to get it approved directly and no one thought anything of it.”

Note to self: Do not pay $39.99 to Sky for the Sonny Bill Williams-Francois Botha re-match, if it occurs.

Don’t pay anything. Instead donate $39.99 to cancer research. Better to help foster a cure for that disease than try to encourage the terminal disease that has gripped boxing and bouts like this.

It’s now crystal clear: it’s all about the rematch. It’s an old boxing trick – generate controversy in the first bout to build interest in the second.

What gives all the bunkum surrounding the Williams-Botha business away is the lack of accountability. The World Boxing Association? Nowhere to be seen. The Queensland branch of the Australian National Boxing Federation? They’re having a meeting on Tuesday. They have to leave the dogs on the back of the utes and there’s probably some debate about whether Castlemaine XXXX will be served or Fosters – brewed in Queensland these days but still regarded as a beer from a daylight saving state. All cane knives and piano accordions will be left at the door and anyone spitting on the floor will be forced to make the missus produce the scones for next time.

    Boxing: SBW-Botha rematch ‘definite’

Khoder Nasser has revealed a rematch between Sonny Bill Williams and Francois Botha is a “definite” despite the furore over the recent fight in Brisbane plumbing new depths yesterday.

South African Botha, under scrutiny because of an apparent failed pre-fight drugs test, launched an offensive from Durban telling two New Zealand radio shows he was offered a bribe of A$150,000 ($184,000) to throw Friday night’s WBA International heavyweight bout at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

Boxing: Botha to get another go at SBW

The representatives of Sonny Bill Williams and Frans Botha have reportedly agreed to a rematch in South Africa in December.

Williams recently won a controversial points victory in Brisbane over the 44-year-old South African, before claims and counter-claims of a late change to the length of the fight, failed drug tests and attempted bribes.

In spite of it all, and Williams’ apparent coolness about fighting again, both camps are keen to reprise the bout.

Botha’s boxing promoter, Thinus Strydom, told Afrikaans newspaper Rapport he and Williams’ manager, Khoder Nasser, had agreed to a rematch.

“They do, however, have a few pre-conditions, like sending samples three months prior to the fight as well as directly after the fight for dope tests. We don’t have an issue with that,” Strydom told the newspaper.

Last week, Nasser said a rematch was “definite”.

No venue has been agreed on but Botha would like the fight to be in Durban, while former All Black Williams would prefer Cape Town, where he has many supporters.
