Kaizer Chiefs won two of their three fixtures to qualify for the Sevens Premier League quarter-finals in George.
Kaizer Chiefs beat the Lions 22-14 and Living Ball 33-19 to advance to the knockout rounds. Their only defeat of the day came against the Sharks, who won the clash 28-24.
The Amakhosi will, however, face a tough task on day two as they face the unbeaten All Stars in their first play-off clash.
The big disappointment of the day was WP, who lost all their games against the Sharks (24-22), Lions (40-5) and Living Ball (38-0). The Cape union have been eliminated from the tile race.
On Saturday, the Cup quarter-finals are scheduled as follows: All Stars vs Kaizer Chiefs, Cheetahs vs Lions, Samurai vs Blue Bulls, Sharks vs Boland.
The tournament winner receives a prize of R1 million.
