Former England flank Hendre Fourie is set to be deported following his premature retirement due to injury.

The South African left the Cheetahs in 2005 to play for Rotherham, before signing for Leeds and qualifying to play Test rugby for England. He made his debut as a replacement against the All Blacks in November 2010 and played the last of his eight Tests against Ireland at the 2011 World Cup.

Last week, a debilitating shoulder injury forced Fourie to retire at the age of 33 (since joining Sale 18 months ago, he had managed to play only 124 minutes for the club).

However, once Fourie’s contract was cancelled by Sale, his sports people visa expired and he was notified that he had to leave the country by the end of the month.

‘I can play for England but I can’t get a passport to stay in the country,’ Fourie told The Times of London. ‘If I had remained on a sports people visa for another two years, I would have got permanent residency, but unless someone is willing to give me another contract, that is not going to happen.

‘My wife [Corlia] is South African, but my boy [Hendro] was born here and I would have like to have stayed and tried to get a teaching job. There were options to appeal but I would have had to wait another few years before I could get my permanent residency.

‘It has been a red-tape nightmare and we just decided it was not worth all the hassle.

‘That’s the amazing thing, I am not able to claim any benefits in this country. I have always paid my taxes, have represented England, but I have to leave while you hear how they protect the rights of terrorists.

‘I am not angry, we have a lot of family in South Africa, which will be good for Hendro, but it is just frustrating the way things have worked out.’

    I don’t eat wheatgrass though some swear it is the panacea for all ills.. wtf was your friend doing carrying his wheatgrass to your function?

    fark wheatgrass, it’s a load of s.hit.
    i got talked into having a smoothie or juice or something or other containing it one time at some place, kauai or wimpy or someithng, cant remember.
    i ended up with a really bad stomach cramp and felt nauseated the whole day.
    that s.hits for the goats.

    Sorry to hear about Hendre’s troubles. Any immigrant knows it’s not easy and at any moment you could be sent packing. I feel for him but I don’t see why he should be treated any differently to a Ukrainian labourer who hurts his shoulder and ends up deported when his job runs out. We all know representing England doesn’t make you English.

    And what ever happened to Tuilagi? He was also meant to be deported but somehow fixed up his paperwork, despite being an over-stayer for six years.

    Not really. Credit should go to the government for making the law that stipulates that you have to be a citizen of SA to be selected for a national team.

    The palookas at SARU still wanted to play Mujati last year on the EOYT for the Boks despite the fact that he is a Zimbabwean.

    Oh yes, I have no sympathy for these players who get kicked out of a country after they have been used by their “adopted” country. Akin to prostitution in some ways.

    The IRB laws for eligiblity are better than simply citizenship for a few reasons. The most obvious is that it’s far easier for a country to simply grant citizenship and make use of the player and it is to see out the 36 month period. Secondly these laws apply to all countries, and in certain countries attaining citizenship can be made difficult or even withheld on political grounds or due to political reasons. By not insisting on citizenship allows players to bypass this potential issue and still represent the country in which they reside.
