Baby Boks get varsity warm-up

The SA U20s will play friendlies against three Western Cape universities in January.

Baby Boks coach Dawie Theron has named 34 players for the camp in preparation for the Junior World Championship to be played in France in June.

The camp, to be held in Stellenbosch between 14 and 27 January, will include trials and friendly matches against the UWC (18 January), Maties (23 January) and UCT (26 January).

‘This is a very important camp for us,’ Theron said. ‘We need to settle on a squad and this will be another opportunity for us to do so. There are a lot of boxes that we will have to tick in the two weeks of the camp to make sure we are on track.

‘The trials should confirm our selections and the training matches will give us a better idea of the various combinations available to us. We will also have to settle on our game plan once we have a clear understanding of our playing personnel.’

Interesting seeing Timo Swiel bracketed at fullback, as opposed to flyhalf.

Robert du Preez is a 10 now? Saw him playing at 9 in schools rugby, really looked a chip of the old block.

Hopefully Matfield can work wonders with all these young locks at the Bulls. I know Jacques du Plessis is a good prospect.

Didn’t Marvin Orie play age group rugby for WP? Looked a good prospect back then.

@Kid_Senekal-14: He was signed by the Bulls when in Tygerberg Hoërskool. I think he played WP U/18. He was a member of the Tuks’ team that won the U/20 Varsity Cup
