Toulon chasing Habana

Toulon chasing Habana

The Stormers have confirmed that Toulon are trying to sign wing Bryan Habana after Super Rugby.

According to Die Burger, the 29-year-old has already signed a deal with the French Top 14 side and is expected to depart following this year’s Super Rugby campaign.

However, a Stormers spokesperson told keo.co.za that a statement would be made in due course.

Habana was named SA’s 2012 Player of the Year after showing great form last season and also scored the IRPA Try of the Year against the All Blacks in Dunedin during the Rugby Championship.

Toulon already have South African loose forward Joe van Niekerk and lock Bakkies Botha on their books. Former Springbok utility forward Danie Rossouw will also arrive from Suntory Sungoliath after the 2012-13 Japanese club season.

    Good luck….hope you are getting a good retirement package!

  • 2.i_love_u_bakkiesbotha: Reply to this comment

    having only contributed 5 of the stormers measly 28 tries last season maybe it is time to cash in.

  • 3.Rhys7: Reply to this comment

    Hopefully he will leave with a Super rugby trophy under his belt with WP.

    To think this will be his fourth season with Wp… Great servant for Cape Rugby a huge loss for any team.

    Van Den Heever and Allende to step up next season.

    Stormers should look to sign Lwazi Mvovo or Raymond Rhule to cover.

    Andries Bekker wil probably also leave end of this superrugby season…

    Good luck to Habana. He earned big bucks in the Cape and whether in form or out of form he was one of those players that always gave 110%.

    IMO , the greatest wing SA has ever produced , better than Slaptjips , Breyton , Chester …

    @wp_boytjie-5: The Carel Dup-fans will have something to say about that statement, but I agree with you.

    The gap between the two (Bryan and Carel) and the rest is huge.

    Ek hou van de Allende op nr 12- hy kan iets soos ‘n Frans Steyn met spoed word.

    @Robzim-8:

    Correct. Scares me when I hear Slaptjips (as much as I loved the guy), Breyton & Chester even being mentioned among those two.

    Bryan is the greatest winger I think, but Carel is a very very very close second.

    @hendrikp-10:

    YOu chaps may have forgotten someone (or you only look in Cape Town)
    In fact if you look at the names that are all WP – which is plainly wrong

    Gerrie Germisuys – He scored 12 tries on his tests including some special ones
    The 1st one I saw was him vs the All Blacks in Cape Town. He made the AB right wing look stupid.
    Similar try in the 1981 AB 2nd test.
    Scored 1 try in each of the 1st 3 tests against the Lions

    Other special mentions
    - Ray Mordt
    - Gert Muller
    - Tom van Vollenhoven (although well before my time)
    - there will be others

    I am not saying Gerrie was better than Carel or Bryan but if you are discussing SAs great wings he will be in the conversation

    @Biscuit-11:

    Agreed I wasn’t ignoring any of those. Just that I think the duel for the top is between Carel and Habs.

  • 13.willievz: Reply to this comment

    @Biscuit-11: Jannie Engelbrecht too

  • 14.Slappes: Reply to this comment

    Never criticise Pieter “Slappes, Slaptjips” Rossouw. No one could rile Newlands up like him. Was/is one of my favourite players of all time. Genius one moment, the next we wanna m@er him. Fallible yet a genius… :D

  • 15.hendrikp: Reply to this comment

    @Slappes-14:

    He was in his prime when I was going through school (87 baby). Have to agree that apart from his final season, there was no-one I loved watching more then Pieter Rossouw. His intercepts were something completely different that to this day gives me goose bumps.

    Sad that he’s now with the Bully boys. :P

  • 16.nama1: Reply to this comment

    Afa wings for WP are concerned, the top three will probably be:
    1.Carel Dup
    2. Neil Burger
    3. Jannie Engelbrecht.

    Sadly Habana never really produced the kind of form for WP that he showed at the Blue Bulls. He was still a great asset to the team though.

    As an international there is no doubt that Habana must go down as the best Bok wing ever imo.

  • 17.Rhys7: Reply to this comment

    If Habana goes please spend money on bringing back Jaque Fourie and Francois Louw!!!!

  • 18.Jeez: Reply to this comment

    Im looking forward to see who will replace Habana when he eventually retires from international rugby. JJP will probably still play for a while.

    Rhule….? Lets hope he gets some game time in the Mid year tests!

    Burger was virtually unstoppable from 25 to 30 metres from the line, but his defense and general work rate was poor. He was great to watch ploughing forward with guys hanging onto him, but he was devoid of any other skills.

  • 21.nama1: Reply to this comment

    @David-20: True that. He could not catch, could not kick out of hand, etc. etc. but boy was it a joy to watch him when he had ball in hand. Seeing all the players lying around on the grass as he ran over and through them on his way to score yet another try, was always great. Especially when he did it against the Blue bulls. :lol:

    An average of nearly a try per match says it all. Great player for WP.

    My dad told me about a final he saw, Ntvl played WP in a final at Loftus. Louis Scmidt, Uli’s dad tackled Jannie Engelbrecht so hard that he broke his collarbone. There were no replacement those days and he played the whol game and scored three tries

    Guys I can’t remember if I’ve told this before: if I have I apologise. During my time at Stellenbosch they had at some stage the following on a Monday: promising players from the different residences were divided into 3 or 4 teams. The teams played against the 1st team Vics(2nd “first” team) and the 2nd team (so in fact the 3rd team).
    All the teams played for 15 to 20 minutes against the club sides. Wouter, a friend in another res, played fullback/wing but THAT day he was up against Neil Burger. He decided beforehand that he was never going to attempt to tackle Neil. He knew Neil always favoured the inside gap. His thoughts were that when Neil (with ball in hand) gets close to him he’ll dive to the outside to prevent contact.
    Guess what ? Neil decided to go outside and when Wouter went for the outside ” fake tackle” he tackled Neil into touch with one hell of a tackle!! Nobody could believe what Wouter pulled off but he complained to his friends for giving him the wrong advice!
    Bad timing by both players !!

    Yes, but his role as a tearaway flank and the way he hit anything that moved with the ball made it inevitable. :lol: Frans was a winger, and totally fearless as well.

    @Slappes-26: one day at practice – I was in the Vics’ team at the time and Neil obviously in the 1st team, after a lineout won by “us” the flyhalf, I think it was Hans Scriba, kicked a ball down field and Neil caught it – I was playing hooker and was the 1st in the defensive line – I thought “how am I going to tackle this guy ?”
    Fortunately Neil “bailed” and took the in field route (lol) – I was relieved to put it mildly !!

    @David-28: hi David, I believe it was Frans Oeschger – my spelling maybe not 100% but not Oelschig.

    @David-28:

    JPR was a good player, strange how the amateurs played so hard and were so well motivated

    Can you still remember Moaner with the bandage around his head?

    He said he had thin eyebrows that bled easily

    Yep, and JPR was kind enough to avoid Moaners eyebrows when he flattened him. :lol:

    It’s fine David!!
    As far as I can recall Frans ended his career at False Bay (maybe I’m wrong) but he played wing at Bellville when I was still a “laaitie”

    He always gave his all – I can remember the blood!!

    BTW isn’t he a CA or an accountant ?

    Surprised there is no mention of JP Pietersen….better than BH in my opinion but has not had the game time or success because he never played for the Bulls. Oh yeah a little reminder to you guys, BH’s best days was when he played with a champion team…

    A news story caught my attention – an audi R8 crashed at after 4AM this morning in rosebank and broke clean into 3 pieces after striking a light pole, a tree & a wall, with the two occupants killed (a civilian & a policeman). Police claim that a high speed chase occurred after a search of the vehicle by two officers who found cannabis in the car . One of the officers was (very oddly) in the car as it allegedly sped away & his partner pursued the pair in a police van.
    Going by comments on a news site, this version is a cover up. An eyewitness denies that there was a chase. Instead it appears either that the person behind the wheel at the time of the crash may have been the officer himself; or that the driver of the audi lost control after being shot at by the officer in his car.

    so you reckon rugby players got skill and balls.. if any rugby player can match either the skill, strength, courage, or talent that some these dudes and dudettes possess, they be IRB player of the year without peer.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbNGlWwyulU

    Fark… the myopic brokebacks reckon Du Plessis and Habana the best Bok wings ever?

    Bring your Prince and Habanero and I bring my Ray Mordt and JPP then we see who’s who in this propaganda zoo…

    @ossewa-39: JPP has a RWC medal, CC medal… Only thing missing is a Super Rugby medal, which he will get this year… Then he has it all… And truly be the most decorated Bok wing ever.

  • 48.garth: Reply to this comment

    @Heavens Game-47: So Brian has a few SR medals and a world player of the year to add to that. I don’t see how JP is the most decorated?

  • 49.Heavens Game: Reply to this comment

    @Biscuit-11: And hard to beat the guts/ballas of enfant terrible James Small on a rugby field…

    Not a classic wing by any means but he stands in the Bok wing pantheon if only for standing firm against the great Jonah Lomu in the greatest RWC final…

  • 50.Heavens Game: Reply to this comment

    @garth-48: Yes… Forgot Habaneros World Player of the year…

    Maybe JPP this year…. But unlikely to see enough ball for the Boks if JdV inside him…
