Toulon give Cardiff the Blues
13 Jan 2013
Toulon’s march through Europe continues. On the weekend they confirmed Bryan Habana’s signature they also thumped Cardiff.
Former England flyhalf Jonny Wilkinson captained the side with regular captain Joe van Niekerk introduced as a 54th minute substitute that coincided with Wilkinson’s departure.
Toulon won 45-25 in this European Cup pool match. They scored seven tries to four and it ensured them qualification for the quarter-finals. One more victory will guarantee them a home quarter-final as the richest squad in European club rugby seeks its first main prize in Europe.
Toulon also currently head the Top 14.
Wilkinson kicked four conversions and again produced a strong performance and his current form suggests he will be selected for the British and Irish Lions tour of Australia later this year.
Saracens, the adopted English club of so many South Africans, also completed an impressive away win in beating Racing Metro in Paris 38-27.
England flyhalf Owen Farrell kicked 10 penalties and a conversion for 32 points to keep the English club in quarter-final contention.
So far, Toulon, Clermont and Harlequins have qualified for the last eight.
Ulster and Leicester are also a win away from qualification with Montpellier and Leinster expected to complete the last quarter-finalists.

Throw in Hayman, Sheridan and Shaw – it is the MONSTER PACK FROM HELL – all retreat before its advance – Johnny playing at fly-half by the way, not Giteau – and kicking so many penalties, from so much pressure, so accurately people are talking him up for the Lions tour (though there is no ways the Lions will match this pack – the Toulon forwards could make any fly -half look good).
