Sharks reel in Spencer

Carlos Spencer will help coach the Sharks during their pre-season schedule.

The former Blues, Northampton Saints and All Blacks flyhalf has joined the Sharks management as they prepare the squad for Super Rugby, which kicks off next month. The 37-year-old has agreed to a short-term stay.

‘His experience as a player and the opportunity for us to use him – no one was – was great for us,’ coach John Plumtree told the Sharks website. ‘He loves his coaching and his knowledge of flyhalf and backline play is invaluable. He will also be looking at kicking skills, he was a great tactical kicker himself and he is really good at passing on his knowledge.

‘Because he’s going to be here for a couple of weeks, he can enjoy himself and get to know the players which can only be of benefit for everyone. I was really impressed with what he did with Elton Jantjies.’

This will be Spencer’s second coaching stint with a South African franchise. He was John Mitchell’s assistant coach at the Lions, before being dismissed after the 2012 Super Rugby campaign.

Spencer said he was looking forward to working with Springbok and Sharks flyhalf Pat Lambie.

‘I enjoyed my time with Elton, he’s an exciting and skilful player,’ said Spencer. ‘Pat is built along the same lines. He’s one of those up and coming players with a lot of skill and one certainly for the future – both for the Sharks and South African rugby. I’m looking forward to spending a bit of time with him and hopefully I can share a few of my ideas with him and teach him a bit of stuff.’

The Sharks start their Super Rugby campaign against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on 23 February.

Ah yes, good old Viv. Scaliest dude you ever did meet.

His simpleton son is going to champion this initiative. And when I say simpleton, I mean that in the most honest way.

He scarcely has two brain cells to rub together.

Agree, clever move… It’s always hard to say exactly how good a coach is, especially somewhere like the lions, but if nothing else he brings a more exciting mindset and a dimension that is typically lacking in SA rugby. I was hoping he’d join Elton at Stormers but at least he’s still in SA, could be good.

Heard from a friend of a friend of a friend of Carlos that he (Carlos) is currently in the best physical shape of his life and that he feels he would have been significantly better (more physical) had he been exercising the way he is doing now when he was playing for ABs.
