Lions crush Russia

The Lions started their season with a 51-13 thrashing of Russia at Ellis Park on Saturday having led 20-3 at the break.

The hosts crossed the whitewash on five occasions, and were also awarded two penalty tries.

Flyhalf Lionel Cronje had an impressive outing with the boot in his debut for the Johannesburg side as he slotted five conversions and two penalties.

In reply, Russia only managed a consolation try via Alexey Makovetskiy in the second half. Their poor discipline saw Valeriy Tsnobiladze yellow carded for a breakdown transgression, while Igor Klyuchnikov received a late red card for a dangerous tackle.

The Lions face the Cheetahs and Bulls over the next two weekends, before taking on the Kings on 9 February.

    Give the players a chance. Give the union a chance to rebuild. SA rugby will be poorer with the Jhb team

    Must agree it was k@k. Good for relations between the countries though

    Russia lost to UJ during the week. They were beyond hopeless. How can you expect SA fans to watch that garbage?

    4400 “fans” at Ellis Park last night. WTF! Where are all the loser fans, cant they grasp the fact that the lions need 30k + per match… LOL

    @Slappes-10:

    30k+? What are you smoking?

    The only teams that average those types of figures during Super Rugby last year were the Stormers (41919) and the Bulls (33562)

    During the Currie Cup no team got even close. The Sharks got the highest average (21458), excluding the semis and final.

    If the Lions will do well to average around 10-15k.
