Crusaders winger Zac Guildford is in trouble again …
The 23-year-old has not been shy of alcohol related issues in the past – he was banned for four games and ordered to undergo alcohol counselling after a naked, drunken rampage in the Cook Islands in November 2011 – and has now admitted his involvement in an incident that occurred after a private house party which is now being investigated by his team and the NZRU.
Guildford also had to apologise for his ‘excessive drinking’ and only narrowly escaped a playing ban at the 2011 World Cup.
He has voluntarily stood down from the franchise.
‘We and the Crusaders were very disappointed to learn of this incident. As a result, the NZRU has initiated misconduct proceedings against Zac,’ NZRU chief executive Steve Tew said in a statement.
‘We will be meeting with Zac and his representative in the following week to discuss the matter, and next steps,’ Tew added.

We are still cr@p….Proteas are the biggest chokers of any sport….

Guildford should just give it a miss.
If he cannot keep of the booze, he should look at taking up another job….rugby is obviously not that important.
He is an ok player…he has his really good games then can go into his shell the next. No big loss to NZ rugby

Don’t agree with throwing out a youngster for having a pis.s up every no again.
Till a couple of years ago he would he been thrown out for not having a pint.
We were that age and might not have been folk property, but still had responsibilities and still had a good night out every so often.
He is a talented player and if you guys don’t want him, please send him to the Stormers, free Castle Lager as part of the contract should seal the deal.

i feel sorry for this kid…
alcoholism is not a simple choice by the alcoholic… it is a disease, a compulsion that is extremely difficult to keep in check and no alcoholic will ever claim to have conquered… they always only claim to be recovering… not cured…
a helluva thing for a young boy to deal with his father dying in the stands while you’re playing a game… i hope he finds the assistance he needs to keep the demon down enough to enable him to continue his rugby career… they need to team him with a couple of teetotal team-mates to keep him on the straight and narrow… (not that it is the fault or ultimate responsibility of the team… it all comes down to guildford in the end…)
and yeah… it’s not about any group of people… not kiwis or saffas or any group… alcoholism can and does affect anyone from anywhere…

Some people are genetically predisposed in a way that means it’s best if they don’t drink. Not saying Zac has this affliction, just getting it out there.
Problem is alcohol is so socially acceptable, so a young chap like Zac, playing a team sport where drinking is almost considered a ‘cultural thing’ (which, BTW, is the biggest pile of popypcock ever invented), it can’t be easy.
I wasn’t aware his father passed (as mentioned above) either, which must further aggravate whatever situation he is in.
I wish the guy the best, and hope that he gets the support that he needs from his employees and family.

I can’t imagine Os walking through Keg with no clothes on. Maybe UFO has done that on the odd occassion, but not any South African, Aussie, Pom or any other nations professional rugby players have thrown their names away in that style that I am aware of.
You need to get your youth to pull themselves towards themselves…your national sport is either rugby or getting paraletic…you can’t juggle both..

And your example is a poor one – Os was sacked as the Springbok scrum consultant for a drinking binge before a game a few years back.

I am assuming the worst here, and the incident was due to Zac being out of control.
If that is the case then for credibility sake, his NZRU contract needs to be cancelled.
He was given a last chance, was provided with all kinds of support and he has now let it all go to waste. The rugby hierarchy can’t allow this sort of behaviour to go on without having a line in the sand somewhere.
I couldn’t imagine my employers being so accommodating as the NZRU were with what he got up to previously.
My guess is he will be sacked as a Crusader and will head off shore on a game by game contract somewhere.

I think a lot more of this type of things happen, but for the majority it is kept in house and dealt with by the team.
The only time a big hoo hah is made is when some hack journalist gets to hear of it and then they make a bigger deal of it than it is.

I seriously doubt it, we all know good news don’t sell papers, so as long as it’s controversial it must get a mention.
The words ” private house party” to me says a lot, so it means he can’t go to a public place or a private place?

@nortierd-25: This seems like a bit of a mountain out of a molehill…yes the guy should be punished but really….he is a young guy who is maybe a bit wild…not the devil. Get him some help in rehab and try and keep him focussed on being a great rugby player, simple.

I feel desperately sorry for this fella.
His tragedy runs deep.
I don’t believe they should cast him out. He needs help and support – now more than ever.

This young fellow needs to sort his personal problems out first because he can only play rugby for a short time, but he has his whole life to consider if he lets the booze get the upper hand.
Rugby, like all sports, is concious of its image and the standards of behaviour its wants to promote and be associated with. Perhaps he is better off away from the spotlight and condemnation that follows.

I had a HECTIC weekend….. Cricket on Saturday (burnt to sh y te once again….it really was hot in Paarl…and all that pain for what? A LOSS. Athough awesome game, and huge congrats to the Black Caps – well deserved victory).
Yesterday I did my best Lance Armstrong impression……butfuckedoutbadly on the bike.
I was in contact with Dawn and she suggested I take a ‘tablet’. I felt that I needed a blood transfusion
Such was my exhaustion, with 19 km’s still to cycle. When Dawn BBM’d me, I was sitting on the side of the road…..sucking on my water bottle and gasping like a guppie in a final – I cycle, but it isn’t my strongest or fave discipline, and I was reminded of that once again yesterday 
I hope you had a great weekend. And yes, alcoholism (often coupled with a personality disorder) is a disease. If they chuck him out, I would expect them to chuck out a fella who injures his ligaments as well.
Disease and injury IS disease and injury = we can’t start bringing in ‘levels’ to suit our own ‘morals’.

rumours being spread on the radio here in NZ indicate that Zac may have been more than just drunk. apparently he was waking up sleeping or passed out people at the house party by punching them in the face.
being drunk is one thing but getting drunk and assaulting people, would be harder to ignore – IF it is true.

yeah… he needs to sort himself out… it has to be a personal decision by every alcoholic… but very few alcoholics can do it alone… as pedigree says, he needs a support system… and as his father died in what must have been very unsettling circumstances… who does he have to council or mentor him…
a little bit of compassion and assistance will go a lot further than a lot of judgment and insults…
but as you say… some time away from the spotlight would be advisable right now…
