Another Lion to roar for Stormers

Another Lion to roar for Stormers

Lions hooker Martin Bezuidenhout has joined the Stormers on loan.

Stormers coach Allister Coetzee confirmed the transfer of Bezuidenhout from the Lions for the next two months because of injuries to two of the three Stormers squad hookers.

Coetzee paid tribute to the skills of Bezuidenhout and said he was satisfied Bezuidenhout, at 23 years old, was experienced enough. The Lions hooker came off the bench in the 2011 Currie Cup final and played Super Rugby for the Lions in 2012.

Bezuidenhout will play against the Cheetahs in the Stormers’ first warm-up match next weekend in Bloemfontein.

Coetzee earlier in the week dismissed reports of former Bok captain John Smit joining the Stormers from Saracens on a short-term loan and also said it was important to go outside of the region to get the necessary experience.

It is debatable whether Bezuidenhout has the kind of experience Coetzee spoke about and hookers within the region have every reason to feel aggrieved.

Smit would have been a very good addition under the circumstances and again I would dispute whether the top club hookers in the Western Cape region are inferior to Bezuidenhout.

    “It is debatable whether Bezuidenhout has the kind of experience Coetzee spoke about and hookers within the region have every reason to feel aggrieved”

    Who are the hookers witin the region with reason to be aggrieved? The only two decent ones with some sort of experience were Sydney Tobias who went to SWD and Rob Herring who went to Ulster.

  • 3.Fleckie: Reply to this comment

    Yeah Rob Herring would have been next in line, wasnt the greatest prospect tho.
    Thought Tobias wouldve been good but ovy they do not rate him, getting a little tired of seeing so many Lions players in the team.

    Lets hope Tiaan bounces back soon. Rhodes is a decent player but I’m not sure we reali needed him but he seems to go where eva Pat Cilliers heads off 2, hell they were even in the same boarding house.

    Teams looking good, Im keen to watch de Allende play this year, big strong and fast.

    Kitsie also needs to b managed, was played into the ground last year. I think Bekker should play 3 or 4 games in a row and then be rested for a week, only way he will cope.
    Lets hope Duvies doesnt start in the 9 jersey, he kills our backline play

    They will have to change their names to the on loan stormers.

    Keo nice to see u writing again.

    Fyi – we Stormers supporters don’t want John Smit anywhere near our team so please stop plugging him it aint going to happen. As u support the Bulls u wld not know what we want.

    Please mention which hookers in the Cape can feel aggrieved ? I agree with the comments above; there is no one close to Martin ito experience and skill.

  • 6.Wanderer: Reply to this comment

    This is typical, vote us out of S15 and then they use our players. Shame on the coaching staff of WP (weer probleme) you do not even have faith in developing your own talent in Cape town. Poach, lend and steal is their new moto.

    @brains_trust-5: Who you calling “we”??

    I and most Stormers supporters I know would have been happy to have John in the team, in a supporting role to Deon. He could offer a wealth of experience and just having him there would give the guys more confidence.

    @Wanderer-6:

    Kinda funny referring to WP as weer probleme if you’re a Lions fan. Why so sad , you’ll finally miss out on the wooden spoon this year ?

    And don’t even think of playing the poaching card , Varsity Cup in Cape Town has seen the likes of De Jongh and Etzebeth developed here, UCT and Maties running the show 2009 , 2010 , 2011 , i’m not even gonna bother counting how many of those guys went on to win Vodacom Cup 2012 and Currie Cup thereafter.

    Sorry boeta , back to the drawing board.

    What has Gauteng even developed in Varsity Cup ?

    You have a very valid point, but try to look at it from your player’s perspective.
    They are getting an opportunity that they would otherwise not have had and also they get additional money, which I’m sure is welcome, seeing as that is the point of having a job as a pro player.

    Agree 100%
    Can’t believe there are still so many who don’t rate or respect the man.
    He was a Bok legend and seen in that regard world wide, yet some in his own country still knock him, kind of like Kallis.

    I’m beginning to think Tiaan is also a bit of a liability.
    We always see how everyone is on Bekker’s case regarding injuries, but how many matches did Tiaan actually play in the last couple of seasons.
    Maybe he just has bad luck, but he seems to be on the crocked list more often than on the field.

  • 15.wpstormerbok: Reply to this comment

    John Smit isn’t the worst hooker around but hell comparing him to Kallis is a m0erse stretch.

    Se ma net.

  • 16.wpstormerbok: Reply to this comment

    And I disagree that by simply having John around it will inspire the other players.

    They have all the coaching they need available so we’re sorted on that front.

    @wpstormerbok-15:
    Not simply comparing playing ability, that’s like comparing apples to oranges.
    Talking about being appreciated in your own country.
    The most capped Bok in history, a revered captain Internationally, and still he gets ridiculed.
    How many years was Kallis also ridiculed in SA and accused of playing for his own average etc.?
    Yet the opponents knew how good and valuable he was.
    Smit got the respect of his peers and that was worth more than anything anyone here can say.
    To assume he can’t add value to any team and youngsters is ludicrous.
    Obviously the anti Smit brigade will disagree and that is their opinion, but by the same token, those of us who respect him as a person, captain and player is also entitled to say so.

  • 28.Dilligafrican: Reply to this comment

    @nortierd-27: well said

  • 29.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

    @nortierd-27: 100% agree with you. Also, its not as if we are saying that he is worthy of a starting spot in the Boks or anything, We all agree that his best playing days area few years behind him, but he surely good for a 20 minute cameo for a couple of weeks.

    I just don’t get the player hatred in certain circles. It makes no logical sense. But ja, that’s life i guess…..

  • 30.wpstormerbok: Reply to this comment

    Smit overstayed his welcome and put personal goals/glory ahead of his team and country.

    That doesn’t make him a hated person, just a player who didn’t know when to hang up his boots and rode on the back of sentiment/respect for his previous achievements.

    So ja I dont know John personally but as a rugby player he doesn’t have much to add anymore.

    Make him a part time specialist coach ala Matfield at the Bulls and then I’ll give it a thought.

    Fleckie tbh herring is a great prospect having only just turned 22. Young with good ball skills with pace and size. Scrummed with London Irish under the tutelge of faan raitebbach when he was only 18. How many just out of school don’t get chosen because they aren’t at a so called big 4 afrikaans rugby schoolin the weste cape but go overseas to a foreign atmospher to prove themselves and then come bck to try and play for their province only to be snubbed. Came back here to make it at province but wp didn’t. Want to contract him, only match by match. Also why would ulster play him in all their matches except heineken cup if he ws not up to it ‘they are currently one of the best European teams. They didn’t go for the likes of beziudengoit. Between visagie and hering province is messing up big time. Time province had atleast one sacs boy in their side

    @lekkerbydiesee-34:

    Lol, your speling in general is not bad it is just the spelling of the surnames (“raitebbach and beziudengoit”) that is a bit atrocious :)

    I agree with you re Rob Herring – won’t be surprised if he plays for Ireland one of these days.

    Was Ross Skeate the last SACS player to make the Stormers and/or WP Currie cup teams?

  • 37.lekkerbydiesee: Reply to this comment

    Ja predictive text obviously doesn’t have standard south african surnames haha. Ja was probably skeate who was a bit dissappointing at province, delport and dollie had brief interludes. Probbaly last consistent player was monty. People really rated Liam slatem when he was in high school and he was very talented playing for provinces junior sides but never seemed to get any major provincial chances after that. In my opinion he would excel with a province forward platfom but unfortunately it was difficult behind UCt forward pack last year, shame uct tight five went backwards at a rate of knots last year. So difficult to judge a scrumhalf

    Bezuidenhout a better hooker then is being made out in this story.

    But I’d still be p1s5ed if I were any of Stephan Coetzee, Neil Rautenbach or Freddie Kirsten.

    Look at the team that played agaisnt the cheatahs today, at an average age of 23 not to shabby.
    This is called development, not the 3 players you mentioned.
    Coach Ackkerman will prove his point this year. He will earn respect (except from old foul mouthed slappes who wipes his mouth of with the underware of a syphills infected ***** from the point).
    We will be back in S15 next year and most likely be in the playoffs in the CC this year.
