Cheetahs test combos

Naka Drotske has made 12 changes to his starting line-up for their pre-season game against the Stormers this Saturday.

Fullback Hennie Daniller, wing Jannie Boshoff and loose forward Boom Prinsloo are the only survivors from the run-on side that lost 33-17 against the Lions at Ellis Park last Saturday.

This means hooker and skipper Adriaan Strauss returns to lead the team. Outside centre Johann Sadie will also get a run, while flyhalf Riaan Smit and scrumhalf Sarel Pretorius create a new halfback combination. Speedster Rayno Benjamin will be tested at inside centre.

Flyhalf Johan Goosen and prop Coenie Oosthuizen will not be risked for the clash in Bloemfontein

Cheetahs – 15 Hennie Daniller, 14 Jannie Boshoff, 13 Johann Sadie, 12 Rayno Benjamin, 11 Rocco Jansen, 10 Riaan Smit, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Phillip van der Walt, 7 Davon Raubenheimer, 6 Boom Prinsloo, 5 Doppies Vermeulen, 4 Rynhardt Landman, 3 Lourens Adriaanse, 2 Adriaan Strauss (c), 1 Trevor Nyakane.

    Why don’t you copy and past an article from the Bulls website for us to scroll past?

    I realise that we have a few injuries and that Naka has now made wholesale changes, but I would still like to see an improvement on defence from last season. Against the Lions we looked better on defence initially but let that slip in the 2nd half. Cheetahs need a proper defensive structure – something I feel they have been lacking since Naka took over. Hopefully this has been worked on in pre season.

    @Cheetahs01-71:
    I see in the Sports Illustrated they have hired Michael Horak to help with their defense. They concede it is a problem.
    Not sure about his credentials as a defensive coach, will have to wait and see I guess

  • 73.Cheetahs01: Reply to this comment

    @nortierd-72: Yeah I’m not sure about him myself but at least there has been an attempt to improve. Schoolboy errors cost us a few big games last season. A little worried about our backline. While it looks very exciting – when everyone is fit – it is also very lightweight. Losing Strauss to the Kings has cost us a bit of muscle in midfield.

  • 74.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

    @nortierd-72: Hasn’t Michael been involved for some years now?

  • 75.Cheetahs01: Reply to this comment

    @stormersboy-74: Think he was appointed in 2011. Could be mistaken though. Maybe 2010.

    @Cheetahs01-75:
    Could be, bit the article says ” to this end they hired the expertise of Michael Horak”
    The way it is worded I was under the impression that it is a new thing.
    If he has been involved for longer then he was not making a real impact.

  • 79.Cheetahs01: Reply to this comment

    @nortierd-78: Been involved for a few years but all the defensive problems can’t fall on him. It has a lot to do with the high risk rugby the Cheetahs play. While we all enjoy that kind of rugby it is up to Naka to find a balance between attack and defence. It sometimes feels like the players have free reign with no specific gameplan.

  • 80.nortierd: Reply to this comment

    @Cheetahs01-79:
    True.
    In a Q & A they ask Goosen some questions and according to him the difference between HM and Naka, he says with HM it’s all down to instructions and game plan and with Oom Naka it’s pretty much play it as you see it.
    Maybe Horak is only now taking the defensive role, so I apologize if I insulted him, didn’t know he was involved already.
    Let’s hope they get that balance sorted between attack and defense.

  • 81.Cheetahs01: Reply to this comment

    @nortierd-80: Didn’t see that interview. That is the benefit of the Cheetahs game plan. A young guy like Goosen should be allowed to play his natural game and not be bogged down by too many instructions, but the key word is balance. You can’t give players complete freedom.

    Where is Willie Le Roux , such a underrated player.

    Hope Juan Smith makes a full recovery i guess he’ll be coming off the bench. It’s a pity Ashley Johnson is gone , Brussouw , Smith , Johnson would be a great loose trio.

  • 83.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

    @wp_boytjie-82: Willie is blistering on attack but has a lot of work to do on the defensive aspects of his game. If he can get them sorted he will become a real contender for national honors.

    Or at least a poaching attempt by the Sharks.

  • 84.Hondo: Reply to this comment

    Where is Willie Le Roux?
    With Raubenheimer and Nyakane. the Cheetahs will be a serious candidate to the relegation/promotion series with the Lions, Saru will see to that too!

    Cheetahs and Bulls to fight it out for 3rd place. My money is on the Cheetahs.

  • 86.Cheetahs01: Reply to this comment

    @stormersboy-83: You right, Le Roux is a quality player with ball in hand but his defence is atrocious. His positioning is also very questionable at times. Last season he was caught out of position on numerous occasions.

  • 87.gunther: Reply to this comment

    @garth-85:

    I’ll have some of that.

    How much are you talking?

  • 88.Cheetahs01: Reply to this comment

    @garth-85: Cheetahs are quite capable of pushing for 3rd position even though 4th seems to be the most realistic. If we can replicate our 11 points from our overseas trip last season and improve our home form we have a chance.

    Zim has $217 in bank: minister

    Harare – After paying public workers’ salaries last week, the balance in cash-strapped Zimbabwe’s government public account stood at just $217 (about R1 900), Finance Minister Tendai Biti said Tuesday.

    “Last week when we paid civil servants there was $217 (left) in government coffers,” Biti told journalists in the capital Harare, claiming some of them had healthier bank balances than the state.

    “The government finances are in paralysis state at the present moment. We are failing to meet our targets.”

    Zimbabwe’s economy went into free-fall at the turn of the millennium, after President Robert Mugabe began seizing white-owned farms.

    The move demolished investor confidence in the country, paralysed production, prompted international sanctions and scared off tourists.

    After more than a decade Ä in which the country suffered hyper-inflation of 231 million percent and infrastructure that crumbled as quickly as prices went up Ä the situation is now more stable.

    But public finances remain a mess and local business battles against unstable electricity supplies, lack of liquidity and high labour costs.

    Zimbabwe’s government has warned it does not have enough money to fund a constitutional referendum and elections expected this year.

    Biti said that left no choice but to ask the donors for cash.

    “We will be approaching the international community,” he said.

    The country’s elections agency said it requires $104 million to organise the vote.

    Government’s national budget for this year stands at $3.8 billion and the economy is projected to grow 5.0 percent.
