Duane to lead Stormers

Duane to lead Stormers

Duane Vermeulen will captain the Stormers this Saturday due to the absence of several senior players.

Coach Allister Coetzee has confirmed that Schalk Burger (calf), Jean de Villiers (neck), and Deon Fourie (quad) won’t be risked in the coming warm-up match against the Cheetahs.

In the absence of two Stormers captains in Burger and De Villiers, and because of the unavailability of Currie Cup-wining skipper Fourie, Vermeulen will lead the side in Bloemfontein.

Coetzee did add that these injuries aren’t serious, and that all three players should be available for the Stormers’ next warm-up game against Boland. That latter hit-out will be especially important for Burger, who hasn’t played a competitive game in 12 months because of a serious knee injury.

Flank Siya Kolisi is currently struggling with tonsillitis, and could also miss this weekend’s clash in Bloem. In that event, Nizaam Carr will wear the No 6 jersey.

Newcomer Martin Bezuidenhout is set to get a run at hooker, while another Lion in Jaco Taute should be at fullback.

The teams for the match in Bloemfontein will be announced on Wednesday.

    With all the Lion dragons playing for the brokebacks it makes things very difficult to be my usual critical self with this team. Damn them for poaching my players.

    Give them a break. At least they will feel what is is like to win and how is it you are critical of them when your team never wins?

    Would be really cool to see Nizaam run out at 6 if Siya doesn’t play.

    Carr is an excellent 8. Better than dwayne imo.

    I would love to see players like Carr get more game time and as much time to prove how good they are

    @Mr Black-4: Nizaam is a different type of 8. In certain games he should start there…..If we play Elstadt and Eben at 4 and 5 (at times….) you have an idela scenario for Carr type 8. Silky running etc (I hope his knee has healed 100% and that he hasn’t lost any speed).

    He was great at 6 in the Junior WC 2 years back though….and many do feel it’s where he should play. I’m just keen to see him on the park.

    @Mr Black-4:

    Carr is indeed very good- he is like a faster, stronger and more skilful version of Daniel Keegan – and he knows how to tackle a centre :)

    @Robzim-7:

    Or is it Keegan Daniel? – I seem to get it wrong quite often- probably because of Kevin Keegan.

    Lol, its sometimes difficult to remember the names of the “insignificant ” players as there are so many of them

    For the top guys its easy- I mean nobody will call Fourie du preez Du preez Fourie.

    @The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food-9: Don’t forget he’s a poc, so he’ll stand a better chance of getting into a Bok squad this year.

    @Robzim-7: He just need to get as much oportunity now with the Stormers as Keegan is getting with the Sharks and he might be Superrugby player of the year as well.

    Just hope young Duanne has unhitched the trailer he’s been carting around for 4 years.

    He’s a blindsider AC!

    @John Galt-14: The trailer isn’t the problem. The french no. 8 is of similar build and is very effective. Duane uses his bulk well in the contact situations.

    @Robzim-10: :) :) :) :)

    (My late grandfather called De Wet Barry, BARRY DE WET for his entire WP/Stormer and Bok career….. :)

    @John Galt-14: At least Duane CARRIES a trailer…. Keegan IS the trailer: just check how those Argies hitched him and dragged him…

    Why?

    Because they caught them before he could send the applicants for fitness test to run a few km’s?

    Doubt if any of the KFC sponsored fat f.uckers could ever run a 2.4km under 10 minutes

    Mr Black, what makes Carr better? Duane was one of the better bok players this year, showed that he is a demon attacking the ball at the tackle, and solid everywhere else.

    If Carr is to play 8, then Duane would need to move to 7 at the very least, which is not a real problem I don’t think, some people feel that he is marginally better in that role in any case.

    What is nice for the stormers if they can have all their players fit this year, is they do have one hell of a pack!

    p.s. Id play Fourie at 6, no exceptions. He was seriously outstanding there last season.

    Duanne has proved himself at test level. His temperament counts for a lot. He never panics and he knows how to suffocate the most dangerous opponents. Flashy skills and entertainment levels may be pedestrian, but he has my vote when we play the All Blacks. He will make Ritchie mak soos n lam.
