Fantastic Farrell flays Scots

Fantastic Farrell flays Scots

Owen Farrell was the chief conductor in England’s comfortable win against Scotland at Twickenham.

Farrell, very good against the All Blacks last November, improved on that display with a commanding performance as England saw off a feisty opening 30 minutes from Scotland before taking control to win 38-18.

England led 19-11 after 40 minutes.

The hosts scored four tries to two but the win was more comprehensive than the scoreboard suggests and Farrell was a class above any other back on display. He played with authority and kicked with equal confidence to score 18 points.

Scotland scored the first try of the match but it was a matter of when – and not if – England would take charge and build on the fine win against the All Blacks.

It was imperative England started the Six Nations well after the magical afternoon against the Scots and while this match lacked the enterprise and sparkle of that wonderful occasion it was still an outstanding win against a dogged opponent who was always brave but never good enough to threaten a victory.

    Scots, wha hae wi’ Wallace bled,
    Scots, wham Bruce has aften led;
    Welcome to your gory bed,
    Or to victory!

    Now’s the day, and now’s the hour;
    See the front o’ battle lour;
    See approach proud Edward’s power—
    Chains and slavery!

    Wha will be a traitor knave?
    Wha can fill a coward’s grave!
    Wha sae base as be a slave?
    Let him turn and flee!

    Wha for Scotland’s king and law
    Freedom’s sword will strongly draw,
    Freeman stand, or freeman fa’,
    Let him follow me!

    By oppression’s woes and pains!
    By your sons in servile chains!
    We will drain our dearest veins,
    But they shall be free!

    Lay the proud usurpers low!
    Tyrants fall in every foe!
    Liberty’s in every blow!—
    Let us do or die!

    England look the more likely but Scotland not letting them pull away and are getting the tackles in. In a half like that we’d usually see a missed tackle or two and a couple of tries down.

    So, you never know if England get desperate and Scotland can keep chipping away, who knows…………..

    This Scotland side is better than I thought it would be considering the Aussie bluffer they have in charge now. Looking forward to the 2nd half

    Hi Jock, Tough luck man, but this England team looks menacing.
    They arguably THE form team in world rugby today.

    Hey Rob. Funny, I was just consoling myself thinking about the AB result and it’s not so bad . Maybe we are playing against a very good team and nullifying them somewhat.???

    It’s making me feel a bit better anyway :)

    There you go. Fantastic try!! Great match, very enjoyable to watch, both teams are playing very well.

  • 25.JockBok: Reply to this comment

    Yep, there’s no doubt we have a pretty decent set of backs, just get them the ball on the front foot and we could score a few.

    @Robzim-21: I think France are in a good space right now, imo they would have beaten NZ too.

    It’s been a great Calcutta Cup match, promising signs for both sides.

    A tad frustrating so not so enjoyable from my side. But I feel like we managed to contain England and they never ran up the cricket score that I thought at one point in the first half was coming.

    England I feel are an early missed tackle away from giving someone a hiding. Once they get in early and get a bit of momentum behind them, they will be very difficult to hold back.

    Scotland need a fly half. Jackson hasn’t progressed in 2 years and although it’s difficult to judge him on a performance when Scotland were on the back foot largely, the one or two opportunities he had were wasted. A lot of kicking away possession, especially in the first half didn’t help the cause either.

    But Hogg looked great again and a couple of exciting wings make a nice back 3, centres also making a decentish 11-15.

    Ag, I’m off for a beer or 6. Well done England.

    Hi Carol. Not an easy start to any tenure going to HQ first up, but let’s see how things pan out the next few weeks. I think we might just have the bones of a side but 10 is a worry.

    Hard to judge against a good England team also, so I suppose we shouldn’t be too down at the moment :)

    Well blow me down.

    Here you are suggesting France would have beaten NZ had they met in the Autumn internationals, yet they flop against Italy, a team NZ put away by 30 points.

    That aside, well done England, you are on your way to improving that 50% win ratio you had in 2012.

    So far its 100% for 2013, and 2 wins on the trot yee haa!

    England looking red hot this season. My initial presumption about France looks a bit out.

    Unless I missed something, Brad Barritt looks somewhat out of place in that squad. He seems to think that his primary role is to defend and nothing else.

    England too me look like they are gearing up nicely for RWC 2015. They have found another Wilko type flyhalf Farrell and have good pack of forwards with actually a good backline!!!
