SBW survives late White Buffalo onslaught

SBW survives late White Buffalo onslaught

Sonny Bill Williams beat Francois Botha on points in Brisbane after the boxing bout was controversially reduced from 12 to 10 rounds during the fight.

The former All Blacks centre was hanging on by a thread in what turned out to be the last round and would almost certainly have lost if another two rounds had been allowed.

The judges awarded the fight to Williams 97-91, 98-94 and 97-91.

‘I love Sonny Bill, but this is bullshit,’ Botha said afterwards. ‘I beat him hands free!’

Earlier, Wallabies flyhalf Quade Cooper won his first professional fight in a first-round knockout of Australian Barry Dunnett.

There will be repeats of both fights on SuperSport at 3pm (SS5) and 7pm (SS1).

This has seriously damaged Money Bin Williams reputation as a serious force tobe reckoned with in the boxing ring.

I can already see the other contenders lining up to fight him, knowing he is nothing more than a paper tiger,

There was a documentary on Sky in the UK on Freddie Flintoff having a professional fight called From Lords to the Ring. It was fascinating and shows that even if SBW barely scrapes through a professional fight, it is still an admirable and impressive feat.

Now I remember why I stopped watching boxing all those years ago! Corrupt to the core.

How the h*ll can they change the number of rounds during the fight from 12 to 10?

Botha had obviously targeted the last 3 round to knock SBW out, and would have, no doubt, only for the 10th round to be suddenly declared final round. Even the commentators were a bit confused and had to stop their constant praise singing of SBW for a minute.

I think SBW himself couldnt believe his luck. It was a very hollow victory for him.

If it’s a Kiwi involved – and it goes to the wire – the refereeing will be “controversial” – this bollocks has got to stop; but it won’t because everybody is too polite.

    @catchlightuk.com-4:

    SBW looks in great form.
Botha looks like a beer drinking hell raiser, but he was knocking SBW silly in the 10th.
SBW was even penalized for hanging onto Botha, because he knew hte next right would put him out.

    What a farce.

BOOS drowned out Sonny Bill Williams despite the code hopper technically claiming the biggest scalp in his fledgling boxing career in Brisbane.

Former All Black Williams (6-0) somehow emerged a unanimous points winner in his WBA international heavyweight title fight with Francois Botha (48-9).

Botha, 44, showed all the experience that had led him to world title fights with boxing’s who’s who including the likes of Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield.

Yet despite battering Williams throughout their 10-round bout, Botha suffered the ninth loss in his 60 pro fights – much to the disgust of the packed Brisbane Entertainment Centre crowd.

Williams, 27, was almost booed out of the ring after officials awarded the fight to the Sydney Roosters NRL star 97-91, 98-94 and 97-91.

Williams had threatened to give up the sport if he was knocked out by Botha.

You guys are kidding yourself if you think Fransie was ‘surprised’ about anything… he got his $100k and a holiday in Noosa and his reputation is hardly damaged (other than him purposely holding back his usual one-two-uppercuts and holding back on his trade-mark over-hand right…

Just another Nasser Hussain spiv circus…

Bruce 1: Oh dear, SBW is out on his feet and getting beaten to a pulp now that Botha has decided to start boxing.
Bruce 2: Never mind, we’ll just stop the fight now and give SBW the decision.

SBW has done huge damage to his reputation as a professional sportsman. I hope he wasnt aware of this setup, although now he will realize what happened and realize what a mistake he made in entering into a corrupt ‘sport’ like boxing.

He’s a fantastic athlete and should stick to rugby.

Quade Cooper I think belongs in boxing.

Sonny Bill Williams wins the belt amidst a huge amount of controversy (AAP)
It was his only his sixth fight as a professional, but Sonny Bill Williams has produced his best by decision. But the nod from the judges will not be what this fight is remembered for.

The 27-year-old former All Black beat the South African boxer Francois ‘White Buffalo” Botha tonight to win the vacant WBA International Heavyweight Title fight at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

The fight went 10 rounds and SBW held on while his feet looked like they were out and he was going to drop. There was huge controversy however. With Botha getting on top, and SBW was struggling to hang on… then suddenly the referee called the last round – round 10 – when the fight was scheduled for 12. Some may call it a ‘sham’. After the fight, Botha just called it, “Bulls**t”.
