SBW survives late White Buffalo onslaught
8 Feb 2013
Sonny Bill Williams beat Francois Botha on points in Brisbane after the boxing bout was controversially reduced from 12 to 10 rounds during the fight.
The former All Blacks centre was hanging on by a thread in what turned out to be the last round and would almost certainly have lost if another two rounds had been allowed.
The judges awarded the fight to Williams 97-91, 98-94 and 97-91.
‘I love Sonny Bill, but this is bullshit,’ Botha said afterwards. ‘I beat him hands free!’
Earlier, Wallabies flyhalf Quade Cooper won his first professional fight in a first-round knockout of Australian Barry Dunnett.
There will be repeats of both fights on SuperSport at 3pm (SS5) and 7pm (SS1).

@lawsy25-150: they dont lose to NZ
we cheat, the refs are in our back pockets, the travel disadvantage (thankfully now it rests forever more) etc etc etc..
but it is this denial that means the status quo will remain..

Im sure its already been said, but this was a farking farce!
Ive never seen or heard of a boxing ref changing the amount of rounds before.
SBW was wobbling on his legs in 10th. He hugged Botha the whole fight.
The lengths the Kiwis will go to cheat and prevent a loss is unbelievable.
I dont like conspiracy theories, but seriously, isnt it strange that it often involves NZ? Often against SA?

@Stawm-156: I thought it was 1 all?? You beat us in 1995 somehow and we smashed you in the QF in 2003?

Controversy aside, i reckon it was a good effort on SBW’s part to go 10 rounds with Botha. 5 years ago it would have been a different story and like it or not, this will be SBW’s 2nd last fight as a pro boxer. He will now have to go up a level and he will be beaten comprehensively. Will be a good thing for rugby as well – this is a side show, he is a world class rugby player in both codes but not a title prospect in boxing that’s for sure.

WILLIAMS WINS BY DECISION. Video up. Williams is boo’d. It should have gone 12 rounds and Botha would have knocked him out. More will come out of this. Some, may call the end of that fight a ‘sham’. Others might just say, that’s boxing. Botha, well he just called it, “Bulls**t”.
ROUND 10 (Eh? What happened to R11+R12 ref?): Can Williams make it? Ref calling it the last round but it’s a 12 round fight. Williams fighting back and Botha hits hi harder. It is the final round!!!! Controversy!!!! Botha needs a knock out. SBW needs to hold on. SBW walks into a huge right hand… he’s gone. His legs are gone. How’s he standing??? He is a freak. He’s been hammered. He’s bent over in two, nearly. Docked a point for too much holding on. He’s desperate. Botha is head hunting. Williams out… hang on Sonny hang on… He hangs on (he says with no hint of hiding the bias)!!! Victorious, probably but under siege, said the commentators. Decision, hmmmmm I’m not so sure it went the right way. In fact, it didn’t. Sonny was great in the fact he managed to stay on his feet… but the winner? Sonny won a few early rounds on points but Botha was pretty strong throughout, especially late. Two rounds lost – a disgrace to the sport. What happened to the 12 round fight? Botha would have won that over 12. In that, there is no doubt.
ROUND 9: Both connect with a jab at the same time. Williams has been great on the inside. He’s boxing so much better than his last five – he’s evolved massively. Good right from Botha. And again. Ref takes a shot (oops) Williams with a straight right hand. And again. Williams getting hit again. And again. Blood coming from SBW’s nose. Botha hits him after the break. One point deduction. SBW is badly hurt. He’s hanging on… he’s going to go…. no. He makes it to the bell.
ROUND 8: Botha rocks the head back of Williams. Sonny felt that one. Botha comes over the top with one but SBW ducks it well. Every time Botha searches for the big one Sonny backs away or slides sideways beautifully. Four to go.

@Stawm-19: I was very impressed with Quade’s awesome short hooks and powerful jabs. He got a lot of speed and impact into those punches.
SBW boxed better, but that was a joke. Botha only started boxing in the 10th and SBw was kukking in his broek! Holding his hands out in front of him, hugging onto Botha for dear life…

Sonny-Bill Williams fight against Francois Botha cut short by two rounds as former All Black given controversial win
Sonny-Bill Williams has won his sixth professional boxing fight in farcical circumstances when his contest with Francois Botha in Brisbane was cut short by two rounds in mid-fight.
By Telegraph Sport1:58PM GMT 08 Feb 2013
Williams was clearly in trouble, and taking a beating, at the end of his WBA international heavyweight title bout against the veteran South African, but held on to defy a flurry of punches and, somehow, win the fight on points.
There was much confusion, however, when the bout, scheduled for 12 rounds, was ended after 10. Botha said his trainer had been told only at the end of the ninth round that the 10th would be the final round.
“It’s a championship fight, how can you bend the rules just because he’s a superstar rugby player?” said the 44-year-old, who fought Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson earlier in his career.
“It’s unheard of,” he told Fox Sports News from his dressing room. “What the WBA should do now is immediately order a re-match.”
There was no immediate official explanation for the early end to the fight.
A World Cup winner with New Zealand in 2010 and Super Rugby champion with Waikato Chiefs last year, Williams has elected to return to rugby league with the Sydney Roosters this year and was non-commital about his future in boxing.
“I’m not sure, we’ll see how we go,” the 27 year-old said.
There was no complaint about the result when Australia fly-half Quade Cooper won his maiden boxing bout with a first-round knockout earlier on the same card.
Cooper took a couple of good punches before putting insurance salesman Barry Dunnett on his back with a clean right hook just before the end of the opening round of their cruiserweight contest.
Despite a dispute with the Australian Rugby Union last year, Cooper has remained in the 15-man code and will be hoping to win his place back in the Wallabies side for this year’s British and Irish Lions tour.
While Cooper was fighting, his Queensland Reds team-mates were being beaten 20-8 by the Chiefs in a Super Rugby pre-season friendly on the nearby Sunshine Coast.

@kaksioek-173: I’ll say upfront that I don’t know anything about boxing. But it seemed the commentators weren’t biased (before the fight they all agreed SBW would be smashed) but during the fight, they all agreed SBW was winning it. Perhaps not in the 9th and obviously not in the 10th but every other round they called for SBW. The two missing rounds is a farce but I’m not sure the points decision is wrong

What happened to “Rocking your rugby world” ?
Did Keo sober up and remove it?
8 Feb 2013, 17:28 pm
@kaksioek-178: Mate, watch the fight for yourself, if you have a brain and are level headed you will see who won the fight easily.

@bokfan1-176: Jealousy gets you nowhere mate.
8 Feb 2013, 17:31 pm
Welcome to the world!

That fight wasn’t deem worth watching anyway but here is my advice to the lesser educated here:
Watch Marius Jonker tomorrow swinging it for the Kings, if someone here reckoned the SA syste here is better he will get a reality check no doubt!
Gee, only last week SARU appointed a match referee name Swindle, how fit?
8 Feb 2013, 17:32 pm
@gonzo-179: I haven’t watched it yet, but I also haven’t read a single report yet that suggests SBW would have won the fight had all of the the scheduled rounds been fought.
You can’t just cut a fight short to fix the result. That is so desperate it is truly laughable.
As the Telegraph put it:
There was much confusion, however, when the bout, scheduled for 12 rounds, was ended after 10. Botha said his trainer had been told only at the end of the ninth round that the 10th would be the final round.
“It’s a championship fight, how can you bend the rules just because he’s a superstar rugby player?” said the 44-year-old, who fought Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson earlier in his career.

@kaksioek-184: If the tenth round was another 10 seconds longer he wouldn’t have lasted. I agree, if it was twelve rounds, Botha would have won by knock out. But when they announced that it was only a ten round fight, SBW was on top. At the time, shortening the fight was farcical but didn’t appear to my uneducated eye to give SBW an advantage..at the time.

@the authority-111: That was quite a hardcore post, but not untrue and I can concur thats how the majority in British Isles feel (having lived there).
Kiwis will not acknowledge it nor will there be introspection about it, and the posters here will (and have) made fun of little side issues (like that you play online games or work in IT) just to avoid your actual point.
This attitude seems to go at least as far back to Colin Meads: “…Colin “Pinetree” Meads grabbed and wrenched Catchpole’s leg while he was pinned under other players in a ruck, tearing his hamstring off the bone, and severely rupturing his groin muscles. He was aged twenty-eight and his rugby career was finished.” (wikipedia)
Meads is now revered in NZ as a legend…
