Sharks lash lousy Leopards

The Sharks shook off the rust with a 71-8 pre-season win against the Leopards in Pietermaritzburg on Friday night.

John Plumtree’s men led 31-3 at the break after tries to flyhalf Pat Lambie, flanker Jacques Botes, right wing Odwa Ndungane, No 8 Tera Mtembu and left wing Lwazi Mvovo. The visitors’ points came from the boot of flyhalf Johnny Welthagen.

The Sharks continued to dominate after the break with Mvovo and Botes each getting a second, and flanker Jean Deysel, captain Frans Steyn and loosehead prop Allan Dell also crossing the whitewash.

The Leopards finally scored a try through replacement Elardus Venter, but the Sharks had the final say when Mtembu scored his second of the night just before full-time.

Lambie slotted five conversions for the Sharks and replacment Meyer Bosman three.

    I also could not find anything about him on Wiki or the archives of the local newspapers. I know he wrote articles for SASI and he was on our TV screens every Friday night when they showed boxing some years back.

    Although sitting at work pressing F5 on the BBC website is not much fun, good result and 4 tries as well.

    Go for it Bakkies. Tell us that Botha won rounds 7 & 8. Just do it.

    That would give your man two extra points and also take away two points from SBW. That will give Botha the fight by 97 – 94 after ten rounds. Don’t be shy now. Go ahead. :lol:

    @nama1-260: hey, the ABC in aussie have said they timed the 10th round and it was 3 minutes long, Bakkies doesnt believe them..

    is no corporation safe from “bakkies law”? :lol:

    @JockBok-259:
    Congrats. They played well.

    The 1st intercept try was the turning point imo. Instead of Italy narrowing the points difference to 17 – 10 the Scots increased their lead to 24 3.

    That was a back breaker.

    It is really simple. There will be rebroadcasts of the fight for this whole week. All Bakkies needs to do is to take a stop watch (there’ll be one on your cell phone, Bakkies) and time the 10th round himself. He does not have to rely on newspapers.

    @nama1-258: Only thing you find is a reference to his book A-Z of boxing.

    Perhaps Bakkies has one called N-Z of Cheating?

    the ref intervenes, the bell sounds… oh the relief… oh thank you jeesus…

    do you agree it was a very, very good thing rounds 11 and 12 were thrown by the wayside?

    Here are some stuff about Bert.

    History was made at the SAB Sports Journalist of the Year Awards – held at the Wanderers Club in Johannesburg last night (May 10) – when a photographer was selected as an overall winner for the first time in the Awards’ 27-year history. Veteran photographer Etienne Rothbart from The Star was named Sports Journalist of the Year in the print & internet category. Honoured alongside him were Robert Marawa as Sports Journalist of the Year in the radio category for his show on Metro FM and SuperSport’s Alvin Naicker as Sports Journalist of the Year in the television category.

    World record-breaking disabled athlete Oscar Pistorius was voted Most Media Friendly Sports Personality of the Year by sports journalists themselves while Mr Boxing – renowned commentator and writer Bert Blewett – was inducted into the SAB Sports Writers Hall of Fame. Guest speaker was Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Parreira. (This was in 2006)

    @David-255:
    He was still alive when Corrie sanders was murdered last year. So, we could be wrong.

    Star’s death ‘reflects badly’ on SA

    September 24 2012 at 07:00pm
    By Kamcilla Pillay

    Boxing pundit Bert Blewett believes the murder of former world heavyweight boxing champion Corrie Sanders will create a poor reflection of South Africa around the world.

    “Corrie had travelled all over the world. He had fought in cities in North and South America… and he was killed in South Africa, the country he called home,” the Durban based author of “The A-Z of World Boxing” and former boxing commentator said on Monday.

    Was SBW in trouble in the 10th round. Defnivokkentief.

    Would Botha have knocked him out in R.11 or R.12? We will never know.

    Would Botha have won the fight if he did not knock out SBW in the 11th or 12th round. No, because he was too far behind on points.

    Would’ve been most difficult to make up 4/5 points in two rounds if you can’t knock out your opponent or knock him down a few times at least.
