Bok Juan Smith retires

Bok Juan Smith retires

Juan Smith was a giant of a Bok player. As a person he was even larger in stature. I’ll remember him for more than just being a great rugby player.

Smith quit the game today because he accepted his Achilles would continue to restrict his ability to deliver what his heart desired. He was honest with himself, which is the character that typified his time within rugby.

He has for me always been the unsung heroes of Bok rugby and was among the players of the tournament.

His desire to contribute to a successful Rugby World Cup challenge forced an early return to the field in 2011 but all it did was ensure he would not play at the highest level again.

There will be no bitterness from Smith. There will be no self pity. It is not his style.

Former Bok legend Andre Venter used to call him ‘Die Yster’; the man of steel.

Bob Skinstad, taking the DJ microphone in Tobby Joe’s in Port Elizabeth in 2003, told people that the Boks were in the VIP area and if there was only one player they should meet that night it was a player called Juan Smith.

‘This guy said Skinstad will become one of the greats of Bok rugby.’

Smith ruptured his Achilles in the opening round of the 2011 Super Rugby season.

He had four operations in the last 18 months to make it back and even though he played two of the Cheetahs Super Rugby pre-season games he said he knew the Achilles was too vulnerable to take the demands of professional rugby.

He told Die Volksblad Newspaper: ‘Were it not for the fans and my family, then I probably would have made the decision to retire much earlier. It was the fans who gave me the courage to – after several disappointing operations – attempt to make a comeback to the rugby field this year.

‘I appreciate all the support I received through the years from my family, Bok- and especially Free State supporters.’

He played 69 Tests and won the Tri Nations, the World Cup and the British and Irish Lions series.

    Juan Smith = Legend.

    He will go down as one of the hard men of SA rugby and particularly Bok rugby.

    It bears testimony to the fact that he tried to come back for one last hurrah. His heart was in it to the very end.

    Go well, ou grote.

    Rugby is for young bones and young bodies and young braves the most auspicious years of any rugby player but especially in the ferocious trenches of uncompromising attrition of loose forward play is between the ages of 21 and 26. Once the bone crunching attrition has had its effect over a series of seasons the spirit may still be willing but by then the knitting of the bones and sinews become bleak.

    Sheesh, that’s a pity. I didn’t see the Cheetahs’ pre season games but heard he turned them around when he came on. It’s sad to see someone retire not on their own terms but, hey, he had a good long successful career. As a kiwi, he was always one of the most respected opposition players

    Keo, do you feel up to doing a piece on the late and great Jan Ellis while you are at it? There too was a truly harder- than- steel (and once a record holding) Springbok, who sadly passed away a few days ago (8 Feb 2013).

    @Hondo-23:

    During the late seventies/early eighties they had a loose forward who was just as good if not better than the 4 you mentioned. Remember Theuns Stoffberg? He also later played for the Bulls and ended up playing for WP but he is originally from the Free State.

    @cyberscamp-25:

    He was one of the best SA opensiders ever… even better than Rob Louw….biggest mistake he made was that he did not retire at his peak and had to play against the magnificent Lions of 74 when he was already past his best…. and as a result the great Fergus Slattery then made mincemeat of him.

    I saw him at Ellis Park Vs England, he was the captain on that test.

    Juan Smith…..legend amongst legends. Never given the credit he so deserved for much of his Bok career. The credit for some reason always went to the ‘flashier, silkier and white boot wearing’ brigade. Oh he was always given a few words here and there, and no one doubted his value….but I guess for the most of it Juan wasn’t ‘glamorous’ enough for the PR wagon in SA.

    2007 – He was my man of the WC tournie, without a doubt.

    As a fan my only regret is not seeing Juan captain the Boks for an extended run, he could have been something even more special in that role.

    Very sad to hear this, but I feel privileged to have watched him play over the years, and even more privileged to have been in front of the tv on my couch for his last 30 minutes of rugby in the Cheetahs/Stormers warm up. The way he rallied his troops in that game, a few brilliant offloads and his bulldozer runs…… Just happy to have seen this one final time.

    All of the best legend, and I’ve no doubt we will see you involved in Free State coaching (Varsity? Union? Grey?) soon.

    Thank you for the memories.

    The ‘ perfect ‘ blind side flank, a banker at the back of the lineouts and a tackling ball carrier of distinction……the epitomy of a blindsider….

    However, I have to add without being in any negative to Smith, his partnership with Schalk and Spies was a poor one…..

    We were drilled at the breakdowns constantly by the Aussies and Kiwis when fronting with that loose trio….yes, we got the odd win, but I would be keen to see the win loss ratio against the Anzacs when that loose trio played as a unit….

    Damn we gave G Smith, Waugh and Mc Caw free lunches at the breakdowns …it was a terribly frustrating time !

    He mentions that someone suggested a special boot with the back cut slightly and how that helped and went further saying that he would like to represent the Boks again form and fitness allowing, and he also hinted on maybe finishing his career in Europe.

    Had a chat with Juan at Kimberly airport in May 2011 and he was on his way to Cape Town for PDV’s 50 man RWC training squad. His leg had a plastic cast and he seemed so optimistic.

    Cruciate ligament and Achilles are the career enders.

    Hope Duminy recovers.

    @Hans Wlomeyer-96: Here, I’ll kick off… Beat this mofos…

    The Hardest farker ever to wear the Bok Jersey was none other than…

    A Rhodesian Soutie…

    Andy MacDonald – Springbok Prop in the 1960s

    “Andy had come from his farm in Zambia to meet with Meads and Lochore and other old hands. We all gazed at him in awe because this was the man who a couple of years before had survived an encounter with a lion. He had gone shooting with native bearers and wounded a lion. He then committed, according to African lore, the absolute folly of trailing the beast. As he came upon it, his attention was monetarily distracted when one of the boys took off at high port. The lion clawed him as it knocked him down and, all told, Andy’s body needed 480 stitches when he was taken to hospital. Survival was incredible enough. The great drama was that while MacDonald’s head was actually in the lion’s mouth, he still had the presence of mind to reach in his hand to grab the tongue. He had his thumb and one finger left of that hand, the others are stumps. It was while he was in this position, helpless, poised on the brink of old inevitable eternity if the lion tighten its jaws that the greatest drama of all occurred. All of a sudden the lion relaxed its hold. It stood and moved eight yards from him. It stood again and then it dropped dead.”

    Tiaan Strauss allegedly tackling Wildebeest in his youth is positively farken g.ay compared to the above soutpiel….

    Really sad to see him go. He was one of the greatest Bok forwards ever to wear the jersey. Above and beyond his performances on the field he was a fine ambassador for Bok rugby. He let his playing do the talking, something many of today’s youth would do well to learn from.

    Farewell and thank you for your contribution Juan Smith.

    @Heavens Game-106: What did he do on the rugga field? Just asking….because what he did there amounts to survival and fight or flight. It means he is mentally tough. (as are 2 year olds/geriatrics and skinny string beans who manage to perform amazing feats when in survival mode….)

    @stormersboy-100:

    Well according to the Prophecies of St Malachi:

    ‘The Prophecies of St. Malachy_ by Peter Bander republished by TAN Books consists of comments on the saint’s life and then his prophecies regarding the future popes from the twelfth century till the end of time. Saint Malachy of Armagh, Ireland was an eleventh century bishop and saint who died in the hands of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and who foretold the day and hour of his own death.

    According to legend, Saint Malachy had a series of visions while visiting Rome which consisted of the prophecies regarding all future popes till the end of time. These prophecies consist of brief Latin descriptions of all the popes, which have born an uncanny resemblance to various aspects of each subsequent pope’s reign.

    Many have scoffed at these prophecies, and some regard them to be forgeries, however they continue to hold up to scrutiny even into these modern times. Malachy predicted 112 popes ahead of his time until the destruction of the Church of Rome and the end of the world. These predictions are especially relevant to these modern times because depending on how the prophecies are interpreted, it may be that we are living near the end of days.

    According to the prophecies, the deceased Pope John Paul II was “De Labore Solis”, and the soon to be elected future pope will be “Gloria Olivae”.

    This pope will be followed by the last pope “Petrus Romanus”.

    Malachy has written “In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Peter the Roman, who will feed his flock among many tribulations; after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people.” Some have interpreted this to mean that following Pope John Paul II there are only two popes left. However, others more wary of this interpretation have suggested that “Petrus Romanus” need not follow directly after “Gloria Olivae” but there may be a gap. This interpretation seems to make sense.

    These prophecies also predict many of the antipopes who reigned along with the popes but who were deemed not canonically elected by the church. With the death of Pope John Paul II and much speculation regarding his successor, as well as with the events of the Second Vatican Council and the subsequent crisis in the church, these prophecies are proving particularly important to consider. They have enjoyed immense popularity and consider to do so as we near the coming papal election. Indeed, it may be that we are living near the end of days as predicted by the prophets.

    Kiwis in spotlight as drugs probe continues:

    The New Zealand Rugby League have become interested bystanders to the Australian Crime Commission’s investigation into drugs in sport as they try to plan the Kiwis’ World Cup defence.

    The six NRL clubs – Manly, Cronulla, Newcastle, Canberra, North Queensland and Penrith – mentioned in the ACC report were all contacted by the NRL on Monday night but given no further information, leaving them unaware what they were being investigated for. The Warriors have not been contacted and are confident they operate cleanly.

    There is still little detail about what the commission has found and what sanctions, if any, might be brought down on clubs or individuals.

    There are a number of New Zealand players who are at the six clubs or have played there recently, including Kieran Foran, Jeremy Smith, Sam McKendry, Dean Whare, Lewis Brown, Sika Manu, Jason Taumalolo and Antonio Winterstein, and the NZRL are keen to find out what it might mean with the Kiwis due to defend the World Cup later this year in the UK and France.

    Oosthuizen on his way back
     Feb 12,2013

    Written by: SARugby.com Editor

    Cheetahs prop Coenie Oosthuizen’s comeback from injury is on track after he came through his first live scrums unscathed this week.
    The Springbok front-rower, who has been sidelined for the last few months with both a neck and back injury, is recovering steadily, with the Cheetahs nursing him slowly back into action.
    Despite missing all three of the Bloemfontein-based franchise’s warm-up matches, Oosthuizen is a likely starter in next Saturday’s Super Rugby opener against the Sharks.
    He was given permission to partake in the scrums, after receiving clearance from a specialist, and Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske is happy with the 23-year-old’s progress.
    “Coenie looked very good in practices and we are full of confidence he will be able to play against the Sharks next week,” Drotske told Supersport
    Meanwhile,Springbok fly-half Johan Goosen, who missed all the warm-up matches with a foot injury, has also been declared fit for the clash with the Sharks in Bloemfontein.
    “We could have played him if we wanted to but we decided not to risk him. He has been taking part in full practice sessions for about a week now,” Drotske added.
    “The only discomfort he has is a little irritation when he kicks, but that hasn’t bothered him much and he will be ready for the start of the season.”
