Watson leads Kings in show of Force
12 Feb 2013
The Kings line-up to front Griquas is what will face the Force in their Super Rugby debut.
The inspirational Luke Watson is back as captain following a lengthy injury lay-off and the side is considerably stronger than that which has played in previous warm-ups.
Along with Watson, other big names that get starts include Bandise Maku in the front row, Steven Sykes getting a run in the second row and the backline getting a boost with Demetri Catrakilis running the show with Andries Struass and Ronnie Cooke teaming up in midfield.
The bench includes foreigners in Hadleigh Parkes, Nicolas Vergallo and the re-imported ex-Sharks and Bulls player Dan Adongo.
Kings: 15 SP Marais, 14 Sergeal Petersen, 13 Ronnie Cooke, 12 Andries Strauss, 11 Siyanda Grey, 10 Demetri Catrakilis, 9 Shaun Venter, 8 Luke Watson (captain), 7 Wimpie van der Walt, 6 Cornel du Preez , 5 Steve Sykes, 4 David Bulbring, 3 Kevin Buys, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 Schalk Ferreira.
Substitutes : Edgar Marutlulle, BG Uys, Jaco Engels, Daniel Adongo, Devin Oosthuizen, Nicolas Vergallo, George Whitehead, Hadleigh Parkes, Marcello Sampson, Johan Herbst.

Eish. Wooden spoon kings
12 Feb 2013, 10:19 am
Not the worst side Ive ever seen.
Not the most transformed either though.
12 Feb 2013, 10:25 am
All the best Luke and the Kings….
12 Feb 2013, 10:28 am
Ah, here we go.
Well, I have no idea how good this team is. A pertinent question is: Is it significantly better than the team that couldn’t qualify for the Currie Cup Premier division?
Second question: Are they going to face the full Griquas Currie Cup team, or a Griquas team minus the top players that are in the Cheetahs Super 15 squad?
12 Feb 2013, 10:32 am
Go Kings
This still not their best XV, but getting closer – imo
12 Feb 2013, 10:33 am
Transformation will come once the Kings have established themselves. Now the region can offer the schoolboys from Dale, Queens, Grey, Selborne etc. an opportunity to stay in the region. With structure, good management and coaching I am confident that the Kings will surprise quite a few people.

This is probably what irritates me most about the Kings.
More than Cheeky or his big headed son.
The lies. The lies about what the team was going to stand for and why they should be included in place of any other side.
Im telling you now, I would be less pissed if they fielded 15 young, talented, up and coming black players from the area.
They might get drilled every week but at least the Kings would be serving the purpose Cheeky and his merry bunch of clowns promised SARU and set out for the Kings in the beginning.
But therein lies the biggest lie, Cheeky etc never set out to make the Kings into a transformed powerhouse for the underprivelaged masses in the area.
It was all about Cheekys greed. And now he has his little lie of a team.
He must feel really special.

Anyone have the facts on what the story is with Keo’s split from his former apprentices Vrede, Cardinelli, Duncan and co?
I realise Keo split from HSM, but what’s the deal with them starting a rival website in direct competition with this one?
I’ve been coming to Keo since around 2004 and it’s gonna leave a bit of a hole if this site is to close down.
Plus the new site looks like it’s run by a bunch of control freaks, with all the terms and conditions they shove in your face over there. Don’t think I’m interested.
As much as I don’t agree with a lot of Keo’s views, he is a ten times better writer than the journeymen who used to work for him. (The recent “Rocking your Rugby World” article excluded, of course.)
Anyone got more info on what’s really going on?
12 Feb 2013, 11:02 am
Don’t care much for the queens who will be drilled weekly. What is so transformed about this team? The usual two black wingers and a black hooker developed by the Bulls. The rest journey men white players lapping up the gravy from Cheeky’s train.

@Tacitus-9:
I’m assuming you received the same email I did: “It’s the website you’ve been waiting for. Highbury Safika Media is proud to bring you SARugbymag.co.za, your one-stop shop when it comes to all things rugby.”
12 Feb 2013, 11:07 am
Go Kings !! Go Luke!! Get over yourself,Rl. Piss off to the Vodacom Cup.
12 Feb 2013, 11:36 am
@Tacitus-9: Its not often that I agree with you,but today I most certainly do.
This site can be infuriating, but Keohane has built this platform up as an institution where ideas (and they range from the ridiculous all the way through to ingenious ) can be aired, discussed, argued about and rejected.
Keo will always be unique due to the variety of visitors to this site and that they get to voice their opinion, be that as it may.
I have been a visitor here since the beginning, even though I don’t post much, and I hope it stays around for a long time. It has a unique Jerry Springer meets Michael Parkinson circus appeal – and that’s exactly why we love it.
I am a fan, and as long as the current format is maintained, always will be.
12 Feb 2013, 11:39 am
@Tacitus-9:
i dont know anything about it so cannot help you with the information you’re looking for but i have had a look at the site and first off i do not like having two men on the left and right sides of my monitor looking back at me like that all the time, it puts me off.
website moderation is a tricky thing and requires you walk a fine like between being too overbearing or being too lax, as one or other of these two dispositions will either drive people away or attract them, who knows?
i suppose a balancing of sorts might be best.
i do prefer the freedom of keo but at times lament the childish trolling/flaming which take place, and of which i am often a cause or contributory.
12 Feb 2013, 11:42 am
contributory or contributor..?.
12 Feb 2013, 11:43 am
@Blokkies-13:
yes, agreed.
12 Feb 2013, 11:57 am
@cosca-12: hahaha you are a drama queen! My advice is to lube up.
12 Feb 2013, 12:11 pm
Black Caps beat Eng by 55 runs
That’s mASSive for a T20 – pakslae!
12 Feb 2013, 12:58 pm
Have the Kings not named all their foreign players in that Line-up, I thought two was the Max. I guess rules only count if you follow them.They then say this is the team to run out against the force.
12 Feb 2013, 13:17 pm
@umkhonto-19:
This is just a warm-up “match”, not a S15 real deal match, e.g. there are 10 subs on the bench
&, no, 2 of foreign players do not feature in tomorrow’s match day XXV
Also, I don’t believe this team will run out against the Force:
Firstly, this run-on XV is (imo) about 4 players short of their best, &
Secondly, they spent good money on acquiring 5 foreign players – I cannot believe that they will not field at least one (& more likely two) foreign players in their run XV vs. the Force.
12 Feb 2013, 13:21 pm
The side is pretty average. The midfield will be ok, Cat at 10 is good. Watson is good but not an 8. The lock pair is good, with Bulbring a good prospect. Buys at 3 is a quality player who was strangley overlooked at the Lions. Maku is handy
Where is Wayland Murray is he injured again?
12 Feb 2013, 13:27 pm
personally, i really think SARU should have allowed them to field as many foreigners as needed. this is a head in the sand sort of approach if their thinking but if the motivation was perhaps to do with not inflaming possible backroom tensions between unions then i suppose it makes sense.
all it does is leave the Kings with room to blame/accuse SARU and/or the BIG 5 if things dont work out and excuses are needed at the end of the season.
12 Feb 2013, 13:27 pm
@Tacitus-4: 1. The teams “significantly different”
2. yes they will be playing close to the Griquas team.that moered the Bulle in the Currie Cup – sans le roux, raubenheimer.

Added incentive for Kiwi Super Rugby sides
New Zealand’s five Super Rugby teams will have an added incentive this year, playing for a new trophy that is being crafted for the Kiwi conference winner.
New Zealand Rugby Union chief executive Steve Tew announced the initiative today at a Super Rugby launch in Auckland for what will be the 18th year of professional rugby.

@i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-14: Haven’t seen the site yet but you say those two guys keep checking you out?
Well that’s probably because the one is NZinChina & the other one’s your dear friend Pops…

@Transformation-23:
No need to be so cranky.
12 Feb 2013, 13:36 pm
@BrumbiesBoy-25:
no, its not.
but almost equally as bad its a Sharkie and Stormpie player
and its wierd
12 Feb 2013, 13:37 pm
@Transformation-23:
your predictions on the match?
12 Feb 2013, 13:38 pm
@i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-27:
The problem with that site is you might want to call X,Y or Z an arsehole for good reason, and before you know it you’re banned from the discussion. Not worth the effort, quite frankly.
12 Feb 2013, 13:42 pm
@i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-22:
and why not allow them the best possible chance to succeed, if that’s is what they feel is needed?
its cutting the nose to spite the face stuff really. in the long term we’ll only building towards having not one but two really weak teams.
12 Feb 2013, 13:43 pm
Hats off to Sykes Strauss Watson Cooke and Maku putting their home franchises patriotism first in their priorities
Now imagine Serfontein Engelbrecht Basson Kirschner Potties 1 and Potties 2 Ndungane Mapoe Stegman Daniel Kankow Mvovo Mtembu Sithole Ndungane Whitehead Steyn Jordaan did the same.
12 Feb 2013, 13:43 pm
@Tacitus-29:
yes, that too.
moderation in regards to the moderating i suppose.
12 Feb 2013, 13:48 pm
Good luck Kings, i fear you will need it. Good effort though in putting out a side with out have been given fair warning and opportunity to sign players thanks to the inefficiencies of SARU. Who wants to sign for a team with only one year guarantee in Super 15. I hope you get to stay in the big time. Would be awesome if you could hold of some of your Eastern Cape okes from the Sharks, like Keegan, Kankowski, Whitehead, Jordaan, Ndungane, Mvovo, Sithole. If we could bring them home and keep them home there would be few players of colour in any other province.
Go kings
12 Feb 2013, 13:51 pm
Griquas by 20.
12 Feb 2013, 13:51 pm
@Tac: “cranky”? u must be pulling my leg Franky-Two-Fingers
12 Feb 2013, 13:52 pm
@i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-28: Griquas to win.
12 Feb 2013, 13:55 pm
@skopdiekan-31:
Since when does patriotism trump $$$ in professional sport? This aint 1962 Dorothy….
In any case, according to Wikipdia, ” In a generalized sense applicable to all countries and peoples, patriotism is a devotion to one’s country.”
Therefore the list of players in your second paragraph are all extremely patriotic seeing as they still play their rugby in SA, no?
Now that I have lobbed my hand grenade, I am off to the beach
12 Feb 2013, 13:57 pm
@skopdiekan-31: What does Strauss and Cooke have to do with the EC?
12 Feb 2013, 13:57 pm
@Angostura-18: Broad getting “klapped” for 53 in 4 overs !!!
12 Feb 2013, 13:58 pm
@Blokkies-37: Don’t come argue with facts
12 Feb 2013, 13:59 pm
@CharlesM-39: LIKE!!!
12 Feb 2013, 14:00 pm
@John Galt-7: jeez so much bile…
they announced that the Kings would play SR on the 27th of January & only CONFIRMED it on the 20-something of AUGUST…8 months of dithering and you want to have a wee about Cheeky? lol
the Kings wanted “entrenchment” for 2 or 3 year, a condition that went along with the fielding of young up & coming players – the ones you want to see get pomped & relegated in one season.
SARU changed the T&Cs, the Kings changed their approach deal with it.
12 Feb 2013, 14:01 pm
@Tacitus-9: @i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-14: You mean to say that garbage lady Nikita is no longer part of Keo? I was bored stiff, and thought to just see what those clowns had to say, one off thing because I was reeeeeeeeeeeeeeealy bored, and now, dare I hope, find that it is safe to come back on! Please say it is so?!
Well since I was on long sabaticle, congratulation to the WP supporters for the CC! Let me tell you I hate you guys :sob: :mr green:
12 Feb 2013, 14:03 pm
Fark…
I am going to larf this season…
And larf…
and larf
and larf…
In fact I will LMFAO weekly at the Century hidings taken by these Kings…
A Bantustan Super Rugby franchise if ever there was…
12 Feb 2013, 14:04 pm
@John Galt-7: An excellent post, this.
12 Feb 2013, 14:07 pm
@Tacitus-9: Yes… Although Keo.co.za has been nothing more than a Stormers/Watson propaganda mouthpiece, at least you can say your say and generally have a laugh…
Worse will be a Stormers/Watson propaganda mouthpiece, without being able to say your say… which I reckon SARugby will be without a shadow of doubt…
12 Feb 2013, 14:10 pm
@Transformation-36:
hahaha
is this the point where you’re wishing you had taken the blue pill?
jokes aside, i respect your honesty.
12 Feb 2013, 14:12 pm
@Sharksgirl-43: hey the PINT-SIZED italian guppy fighter is BACK!!!!!!!!
how are you bella?
12 Feb 2013, 14:16 pm
Patriotism in this case extends to the borders of the Swd George area in the west Kokstad or Mtubatuba boundaries with KZN in north and OFS Lesotho borders in the north west which ostensibly remain the catchment areas for rugby talented youth of the EP franchise.
Furthermore this false mercenary type sporting evolution called ‘professionalism’ is the baleful disease which is at the core of everything that is wrong with this so called modern professional activities
less nobody is yet privy to all sordid activities which rules the money marauding mayhem such as match fixing crooked refs crooked drug cheats crooked gambling syndication and lurid luring of talented prospects with money
12 Feb 2013, 14:19 pm
@Sharksgirl-43:
hahaha
good question actually, unfortunately i dont know the answer to it. i think Nikita may still be involved in some capacity seeing as she’s not part of the sarugbymag ‘A-Team’ comprising Gary Lemke, Jon Cardinelli, Gareth Duncan, Ryan Vrede and Simon Borchardt.
so, you may still hear from her. how often i cannot say though.
