Watson leads Kings in show of Force

The Kings line-up to front Griquas is what will face the Force in their Super Rugby debut.

The inspirational Luke Watson is back as captain following a lengthy injury lay-off and the side is considerably stronger than that which has played in previous warm-ups.

Along with Watson, other big names that get starts include Bandise Maku in the front row, Steven Sykes getting a run in the second row and the backline getting a boost with Demetri Catrakilis running the show with Andries Struass and Ronnie Cooke teaming up in midfield.

The bench includes foreigners in Hadleigh Parkes, Nicolas Vergallo and the re-imported ex-Sharks and Bulls player Dan Adongo.

Kings: 15 SP Marais, 14 Sergeal Petersen, 13 Ronnie Cooke, 12 Andries Strauss, 11 Siyanda Grey, 10 Demetri Catrakilis, 9 Shaun Venter, 8 Luke Watson (captain), 7 Wimpie van der Walt, 6 Cornel du Preez , 5 Steve Sykes, 4 David Bulbring, 3 Kevin Buys, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 Schalk Ferreira.

Substitutes : Edgar Marutlulle, BG Uys, Jaco Engels, Daniel Adongo, Devin Oosthuizen, Nicolas Vergallo, George Whitehead, Hadleigh Parkes, Marcello Sampson, Johan Herbst.

    @stormersboy-97: Ummmm…the reasoning is the rules of the competition. They are not allowed – full stop. I am getting in touch with my contacts in the antipodean component of SANZAR today because I doubt they are aware of this. Its a typical South African ‘krismaas boks’

    @Dusky-101: I speak under correction but I understand that either the Rebels or the Force were allowed to sign extra foreigners in their first year so I believe that there is precedent for this, but that SARU would have to OK it, which they don’t seem willing to do.

    @Dusky-105: This from SuperXV July 2012:

    “The struggling Western Force will be allowed an additional foreign player next season to help them become more competitive in the Super 15 rugby competition.

    The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) announced t decision on Friday following a request from the Perth-based franchise to revise its Foreign Player Contracting Rule.

    Prior to the change, the Force, along with rival Australian teams ACT Brumbies, Queensland Reds and New South Wales Waratahs, were allowed to recruit two developing foreign players, or one marquee and one developing foreign player.

    The Melbourne Rebels, finishing their second season, are the only exception to the foreign player concession and are allowed to recruit a maximum of 10 foreign players.”

    @stormersboy-104:
    yes, up to 10 foreign players but the motivation was for reasons that they not attempt to recruit from the other four Ozzie super teams thus weakening possibly weakening any of those teams in the event they were to.

  • 109.gonzo: Reply to this comment

    @Dusky-101: It’s not a SANZAR rule though as far as I know but a SARU one. The aussie let the force and rebels have more, the nz team have maybe two foreigners but need to get agreement from nzru and there must be no kiwi alternative in that position.

    but what i can’t figure out, is have they even named their squad yet? they can only name, what, 30? Surely they are late in submitting it by now

    @WP-Forever-106: Yes it was a blast. Were you there?

    Siya was huge.Often players who have a break out season struggle the next but he seems to have picked up where he left off.

    He plays better when he plays 7 than 6 though. He really got going when Deon moved to six after Elstadt went off.

    @i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-108: I’m simply correcting Dusky who is under the impression that the rule is non negotiable. The reasoning behind it may differ, but the fact is, SARU could have allowed them more if they wanted to, but the didn’t. This therefore becomes more of a Kings-SARU issue than a Kings – SANZAR one if you ask me.

    @stormersboy-110:

    I still dream of the following loose forward combination for the Stormers:

    6. Francois Louw
    7. Siya Kolisi
    8. Duane Vermeulen

    With Rynard Elstadt on the bench covering lock and flank.

    @gonzo-109:
    i think more correctly its a SANZAR policy that such decisions are the preserve of the individual unions of the three countries.

  • 114.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

    @WP-Forever-112: Yes, that would be the “perfect storm” of loosies in SA. Elstadt was also huge on Saturday, he carried the ball really well. I’m looking forward to watching him this year.

    yes, which in truth is actually more of a Kings – ‘The rest of the powerful Unions’ issue.

    my opinion remains that it is ultimately short sighted of SARU (the Big 5) if the reason is simply to selfishly screw the Kings.

    but i might be wrong.

    in fact, i think i am wrong.
    assuming the thinking is ‘there’s a pie, why share it’..?

    Like a beggar standing at the traffic light with a sob story and their hand out – that is the Kings.

    It doesn’t seem that anyone really knows what their role is in this tournament so more than likely the Kings will get away with this.

    Actually – allow them to have the additional foreign players – I dont want them to have any excuses when they get f$cked up.

    @SpringbokSarah-140: I think the Kings are going to get stuffed by Griquas and there will be a bunch of ‘dazed and confused’ looks when the final whistle blows. Puke Watson will have that usually scowl, blaming the other players in his team.

    Or at least – this is what I hope for.
