Griquas edge Kings

Griquas edge Kings

Griquas got the win but Southern Kings Director of Rugby Alan Solomons got questions answered in his team’s final Super Rugby pre-season outing.

Griquas scored late to win 30-27 and Solomons told Keo.co.za on the balance of performance the right team got the winning result.

‘Pre-season matches are about more than the result but every player and team wants a winning one,’ he said. ‘We did not get enough ball to enforce our way of play and all credit to the effort of Griquas. They dominated the lineout and denied us a platform. It is hard to play any game without ball from set piece and if the boys didn’t know that they certainly will now.’

The Kings historic Super Rugby debut is Solomons’ focus and he said bigger than the result in Port Elizabeth was that captain Luke Watson and lock Steven Sykes got through the match in what was their first appearance after lengthy injury lay-offs.

‘We gained from those objectives in that the players returning from injury got the necessary hit out, but in any sport the objective is to win. That we did not get and we did not deserve a winning result. There has never been any illusion about the challenge in Super Rugby proper but we will be in a position to field a match squad close to full strength. That wasn’t looking possible a few weeks ago.

‘It is a credit to our medical and conditioning staff and to the desire of the players.’

Solomons said he was thankful for the commitment of Griquas and how important the match would be in the mental preparation for the historic season opener in a week.

‘Griquas approached it like it was a Super Rugby match and it was the physical and mental preparation you can’t replicate at training. We’ve got lots to work with in the next week. But take nothing away from Griquas. They came here to win and they did so.’

The Kings play the Force in Port Elizabeth to start their Super Rugby history.

@victoriabok-541: WP fck’d up wit Pollard and with JL Dup .. I have been scathing about how they targeted Jantjies then went after the young Jordaan brother from Grey Bloem and lost both Pollard and JL Du Plessis in the process.. and then as a poor trade off got the Bulls u 20 player Eksteen as a poor swap..

I don’t know if its also a racially stereotypical maneuver that the youngsters all want to go play their rugby elsewhere for big money or so called profiteering professionalism or who or what is driving there desire to play away from the franchise that actually developed and honed their skills..

The only thing I can think of is that there is a rift between the racial stigma or ideology that is driving some kids to play for Bulls and Sharks rather than play for WP.. and I doubt it is purely and only money that is doing it, unless if it is financially driven then this money game is getting too influential too soon in young inspiring players lives.

Ok back to rugby, So the Kings not doing well in their warm up matches?? well was to be expected, in all honesty i did not expect them to be world beaters in their first attempt.

@skopdiekan-554: Actually it would be the mature thing to do? No?

As for your thoughts on why young players decide to further their careers like at the | Buuls or the Sharks? it is for the same reason a kid would go to UCT than to PMB University, belief is that UCT is a far batter University with a higher standard,

Same for the Rugby career of a youngster, the feeling of most kids is that the Sharks offer a better career opportunity, Ditto Bulls

@Sharks_are_gonna_get_you-553: If Kings manage just ONE win in 2013 the result would be such that Bulls did worse in 2002 and so did Lions in 2010

Bulls also did shockingly in 1999 and 2001 only 1 win from 11 games

So Kings would have to go a far way to emulate those great feats of achievement.. and this by franchises with no dearth of public or financial or popular support and appeal..

If kings do better than this in year one they would have done far better than these great powerhouses of SA rugby managed after not their first year at endeavor but their umpteenth year of consistent trying.

    @skopdiekan-561:

In 99 Bulls got 1 win from 11 games
in 2000 Both Bulls and Sharks got 1 win from 11 games
In 2001 Bulls got 2 wins from 11 games
In 2002 Bulls got 0 wins from 11 games
(Sharks got 4/11 and Cats 1/11 = 3 SA teams propping up the bottom of the table)

so in 4 years 99 – 2002 Bulls played 44 games and won 4, a success rate of around 9%

Lets see Kings do worse than that… and Bulls had plenty money and plenty clout and no constrictions as to where they got their players from yet they hit bottom 4 years in a row consistently.

@skopdiekan-569: In 1997 the Stormers got 0 wins from 0 games as a result of not qualifying. That is the kakkest of the lot. The Kings by virtue of being included have already done better than that.

@Sharks_are_gonna_get_you-565: Yes well people’s perceptions and reality are two completely different things.

When the Free State’s claim that the Sharks steal all their players was posed to the Du Plessis brothers, they said that they were Sharks supporters all their life. Learned it from their dad.

I didn’t live in Natal either when I lived in SA but who do you think I would have encouraged my kids to play for ?

So does that mean that they were really poached ?

@Dusky-563: Stormers were excluded because they came 5th in the 96 CC Cheetahs took their place in S12 .. so they didn’t participate due to their CC status not their SR status

since then Stormers are the most consistently successful SA side in spite of what you big bok money rattling brekers think you are, Stormers got a better average result than all other SA franchises including Bulls and Sharks.

@nortierd-575: I think it’s a bullsh&t argument to be honest. I dont buy into it at all. I am just replying to your fellow WP supporter because he for some reason thinks this is a valid reason for the Kings to be included in Super rugby, and that by benchmarking their performances against the poorest performances by SA teams that their inclusion will be validated.

That is how stupid the d00s is.

    I know
I don’t think the scores will be that big against them, after the first few rounds the teams will have sussed them out and will use the match against them to rest their top players.
Maybe at the business end teams will start going for big scores to prop up their points difference

@Sharks_are_gonna_get_you-579: since when are the Du Plessis family always been Sharks supporters.. since Michael and Willie and Carel all played for EP and WP and TVL or since when?

Wrong again, they were nearly bankrupt then, they could only afford to contract U/20 players at that time 2000-2001

HM turned it around slowly by winning the VC in 2001 and the CC in 2002, but up to then they had very little money

They definitely could not have afforded a R3 million salary like Pukes at the Kings

@nortierd-585: Dude you are forgetting how the Super 15 goes. Teams will want the 5 log points, but over and above that they will want the points difference. You forget that in 2005 I think it was, the Sharks missed out playing in the semi-final because of 1 point on points difference – can you recall why ? Because the Stormers took a 41 point rogering from the Bulls in Cape Town in their last round robin match.

Teams will not relax against the Kings unless they are forced to. They will want max points and max points difference. Nobody has relaxed against the Melbourne Rebels have they ?

  • 600.Dusky: Reply to this comment

@victoriabok-598: ha ha ha ha….shame jirre – the Stormers still have the win/loss ratio thing. At least they have something.

Oops I forgot they also have the conference winners trophy and they also won that pre-season warm up thing twice. LOL !
