Griquas edge Kings
13 Feb 2013
Griquas got the win but Southern Kings Director of Rugby Alan Solomons got questions answered in his team’s final Super Rugby pre-season outing.
Griquas scored late to win 30-27 and Solomons told Keo.co.za on the balance of performance the right team got the winning result.
‘Pre-season matches are about more than the result but every player and team wants a winning one,’ he said. ‘We did not get enough ball to enforce our way of play and all credit to the effort of Griquas. They dominated the lineout and denied us a platform. It is hard to play any game without ball from set piece and if the boys didn’t know that they certainly will now.’
The Kings historic Super Rugby debut is Solomons’ focus and he said bigger than the result in Port Elizabeth was that captain Luke Watson and lock Steven Sykes got through the match in what was their first appearance after lengthy injury lay-offs.
‘We gained from those objectives in that the players returning from injury got the necessary hit out, but in any sport the objective is to win. That we did not get and we did not deserve a winning result. There has never been any illusion about the challenge in Super Rugby proper but we will be in a position to field a match squad close to full strength. That wasn’t looking possible a few weeks ago.
‘It is a credit to our medical and conditioning staff and to the desire of the players.’
Solomons said he was thankful for the commitment of Griquas and how important the match would be in the mental preparation for the historic season opener in a week.
‘Griquas approached it like it was a Super Rugby match and it was the physical and mental preparation you can’t replicate at training. We’ve got lots to work with in the next week. But take nothing away from Griquas. They came here to win and they did so.’
The Kings play the Force in Port Elizabeth to start their Super Rugby history.

@skopdiekan-596:
SR results 1998 – 2012
@victoriabok-595: why were they so poor if they had been playing SR rugby since before WC 1995
In 96 they lost to Blues in the semis so they weren’t so kak then
So what was the reason for their demise.. for the following 4 years after 1998?
couldn’t be because of poor management surely not with all those blue eyed Tukkies business model students running the enterprise?

@victoriabok-598: Dude the Bulls are South Africa’s most successful Super rugby team. Everyone knows that. You cannot deny the three titles. Semi-finals, finals, win/loss – all that doesn’t matter. The only place it matters is in Cape Town.
14 Feb 2013, 20:28 pm
@skopdiekan-601: The Bulls started to struggle because military conscription and the way people were drafted to the Police changed. Pretoria Weermag and Pretoria Polisie were big forces in club rugby.
They almost totally disappeared because the fat, lazy, corrupt slobs that we have now only follow football.

@victoriabok-598: consistently Stormers are best SA franchise .. same as Crusaders are best consistent NZ franchise. Even though Crusaders finished last one year when Auckland won early on..
Bulls got some lucky breaks with ref’s in their back pocket at home in certain years and avoided some tough knockout games and pulled through with some home town refereeing.
Overall Stormers still most consistent SA finisher don’t matter whether they didn’t finish top.. Sharks also never finished top.. so only bragging rights Bulls have is they got lucky home town decisions to win outright 3 times at home.
Sharks got zero bragging rights over Stormers because overall Stormers are better and neither team have gone on to win the entire thingamajig outright.
Only Bulls and TVL have managed to do that from SA teams in almost 2 decades of SR rugby

> So what was the reason for their demise.. for the following 4 years after 1998?
They added a new section to the stands and funded it by selling seasons tickets and “losies” for the next fouror five years at a cheap price. It seemd a good idea at the time, that was the time when interest rates were sky high remember?
Then rugby players turned pro and they didn’t have the cashflow to pay them so a lot left and they had a kak coach as well

Careldup suddenly a sharks supporter?Typical delusional guppies.Sharkslover still a dramatical guppy it seems.!
14 Feb 2013, 20:33 pm
@skopdiekan-605: Sharks did finish top idiot. Go look again.
Bulls have won 3 titles – they are South Africa’s most successful Super rugby outfit. Your moffies can’t even win a home semi-final. Twice in a row – no other team has such a kak record at home in super rugby playoffs.

@victoriabok-606: The oke exposes himself from time to time with his lack of knowledge and inaccurate comments. He is just here to get a reaction. Knows nothing about rugby.

@S_K-607: Whoever he supports – he certainly didn’t do a lot of effort encourage his son to stay with WP now did he ? Carel Du Plessis son playing for the Sharks….can you imagine !
14 Feb 2013, 20:35 pm
@S_K-607: Wasn’t he called the princess of wings ?
14 Feb 2013, 20:35 pm
How did you reach that conclusion ,dusty.Conscription ended long before that.
14 Feb 2013, 20:36 pm
@S_K-612: Yes but the makeup of the military didn’t change overnight.
14 Feb 2013, 20:41 pm
@Dusky-610: that is no problem, dusty.wp don’t owe careldup any favours. His son had to go where he can get game time .He probably would have been way down the pecking order.in any case I have never seen the boytjie play so I am not gonna say much about his abilities.
14 Feb 2013, 20:43 pm
@S_K-614: Great. I will remember your post when you moffies have a little ***** session about the Sharks buying your players.
14 Feb 2013, 20:44 pm
@S_K-614: Personally I think he didn’t like the idea of the jeans they sell in the mens clothing stores in Cape Town with knee pads and a zip in the back.

14 Feb 2013, 20:52 pm
@skopdiekan-617: Hey d00s kop…..we dont give a f#ck about the win rate – get it into your neanderthalic skull ! Nobody rates f0kk0l by the amount of battles you won – its about who won the war.
Order the teams by titles won gwar neus.

@Dusky-613:

14 Feb 2013, 21:09 pm
@victoriabok-619: Nee – nooit in IKEA nie.

Don’t be a Trollope, dusty.I don’t give a toss whether you sign up all the school kids.Did not see any other stormer fan complained about the sharks buying up EP school boys.
14 Feb 2013, 21:23 pm
@skopdiekan-637: Correction. Stormers finished top in 2012 overall – Sharks played in the final. The South African team that lasted the longest.
14 Feb 2013, 21:24 pm
@S_K-639: Huh ? How long have you been around ? Have you read your fellow WP supporter, Skop’s comments ? Obviously not.
14 Feb 2013, 21:24 pm
@skopdiekan-637: Sharks have played in more semi-finals and finals than the Stormers.
14 Feb 2013, 21:25 pm
@S_K-639: should read trilkop, dusty. Mobile spellchecker . You would understand ne?
14 Feb 2013, 21:25 pm
@S_K-643: Ja – I got it
14 Feb 2013, 21:29 pm
@skopdiekan-637: Sharks also have a better conversion rate of semi-finals to finals. Also head to head, the Sharks have the upper hand over the Stormers on wins between the two teams if I am not mistaken.
Despite all that, the Bulls are still SAs most succesful Super rugby outfit.
The Stompies still have to win 4 winners trophies at a minimum and hope the Bulls dont win any more in order to take that position.
