Griquas edge Kings

Griquas edge Kings

Griquas got the win but Southern Kings Director of Rugby Alan Solomons got questions answered in his team’s final Super Rugby pre-season outing.

Griquas scored late to win 30-27 and Solomons told Keo.co.za on the balance of performance the right team got the winning result.

‘Pre-season matches are about more than the result but every player and team wants a winning one,’ he said. ‘We did not get enough ball to enforce our way of play and all credit to the effort of Griquas. They dominated the lineout and denied us a platform. It is hard to play any game without ball from set piece and if the boys didn’t know that they certainly will now.’

The Kings historic Super Rugby debut is Solomons’ focus and he said bigger than the result in Port Elizabeth was that captain Luke Watson and lock Steven Sykes got through the match in what was their first appearance after lengthy injury lay-offs.

‘We gained from those objectives in that the players returning from injury got the necessary hit out, but in any sport the objective is to win. That we did not get and we did not deserve a winning result. There has never been any illusion about the challenge in Super Rugby proper but we will be in a position to field a match squad close to full strength. That wasn’t looking possible a few weeks ago.

‘It is a credit to our medical and conditioning staff and to the desire of the players.’

Solomons said he was thankful for the commitment of Griquas and how important the match would be in the mental preparation for the historic season opener in a week.

‘Griquas approached it like it was a Super Rugby match and it was the physical and mental preparation you can’t replicate at training. We’ve got lots to work with in the next week. But take nothing away from Griquas. They came here to win and they did so.’

The Kings play the Force in Port Elizabeth to start their Super Rugby history.

HSSM: Most people were surprised by your
decision to sign for the EP Kings when all
of the big four franchises (Sharks, Bulls,
    Cheetahs, and Western Province) were
after your signature. Could you tell us why
    you chose the EP Kings?

Sergeal Petersen: I feel like I should give
back to what this province has done for
me over the past years, so I think starting
here and maybe ending up at a bigger
province is better option then starting at a
bigger province then moving back here.

Cape Town – Western Province have
signed two SA Schools flyhalves, Pieter
Jordaan (Free State) and Ryno Eksteen
(Blue Bulls), with the duo set to further
their rugby careers in Cape Town from
    the start of 2013.

Jordaan, the 2011 SA Schools flyhalf,
and Eksteen, a current member of the
SA Schools set-up, were both in action
at the 2012 Craven Week tournament in
Port Elizabeth and great things are
expected of them in the future.

    Eksteen was the leading points-scorer
at the 2012 Craven Week and helped
his team, the Blue Bulls, to victory in
the unofficial final against the Golden
    Lions. Despite the treacherous
conditions on the final day, Eksteen
    displayed an excellent amount of
composure and control from the crucial
    flyhalf channel.

Jordaan, the younger brother of SA
Sevens and Under-20 star Paul, has
showed his value as a team man
throughout 2012. He has been playing
at centre for his school, Grey College,
which saw him selected in the midfield
at Craven Week and, ultimately, cost
him another crack at SA Schools
selection. However, he will be coming to
the Cape as a flyhalf, first and
    foremost.

“We’re very happy with the line-up of
young players we have set to join the
    Institute next year – it’s a talented
    bunch of players,” said Jacques
Hanekom, the head of the WP Rugby
    Institute in Stellenbosch, who also
confirmed that WP had secured the
signature of No 8 Steven Meiring, who
was a key man for the Bulls at Craven
    Week alongside flyhalf Eksteen.

Jordaan, Eksteen and Meiring will all be
based at the WP Rugby Institute in
Stellenbosch from next year, as they
take a step up in their ‘rugby
    education’, and Hanekom added: “All
these players were in high demand
across the country, so we’re excited to
have them coming to Cape Town and
    looking forward to developing their
    rugby even more.”

Paarl Boys’ High School scholar, Jean-
Luc du Plessis, has opted to further his
career in Durban with the Sharks -
despite being offered a place at the WP
Rugby Institute next year, as well as a
WP contract – but the arrival of Jordaan
and Eksteen, and the presence of Tim
Swiel and Dillyn Leyds, means there will
be plenty of talent competing for the
coveted No 10 jersey in Cape Town in
    years to come.

Both Swiel and Leyds are still Under-20,
but are currently key members of the
DHL WP Under-21 team competing in
    their provincial competition.

jean-luc chose the Sharks cos it will be easier to crack it rather than fight it out with Eksteen, Jordaan…

Thank you for proving it

WP fcked up.. they should have left Jantjies to run off to the Sharkshits.. they should NOT have bought that second rate FH from PTA Eksteen and they should not have run after Jordaan UNTIL they had signed up Pollard and J L Du Plessis..

bad trade buying Jantjies, Jordaan and Eksteen and losing Du Plessis and Pollard in the process.. very poor horse trading by the WP suits.

However the end result is as it is and now they must punt on with Jordaan.. he is the one that can be the pivot for the future.. forget Jantjies and Eksteen and run with Jordaan and Swiel must stick at FB.
