Griquas edge Kings
13 Feb 2013
Griquas got the win but Southern Kings Director of Rugby Alan Solomons got questions answered in his team’s final Super Rugby pre-season outing.
Griquas scored late to win 30-27 and Solomons told Keo.co.za on the balance of performance the right team got the winning result.
‘Pre-season matches are about more than the result but every player and team wants a winning one,’ he said. ‘We did not get enough ball to enforce our way of play and all credit to the effort of Griquas. They dominated the lineout and denied us a platform. It is hard to play any game without ball from set piece and if the boys didn’t know that they certainly will now.’
The Kings historic Super Rugby debut is Solomons’ focus and he said bigger than the result in Port Elizabeth was that captain Luke Watson and lock Steven Sykes got through the match in what was their first appearance after lengthy injury lay-offs.
‘We gained from those objectives in that the players returning from injury got the necessary hit out, but in any sport the objective is to win. That we did not get and we did not deserve a winning result. There has never been any illusion about the challenge in Super Rugby proper but we will be in a position to field a match squad close to full strength. That wasn’t looking possible a few weeks ago.
‘It is a credit to our medical and conditioning staff and to the desire of the players.’
Solomons said he was thankful for the commitment of Griquas and how important the match would be in the mental preparation for the historic season opener in a week.
‘Griquas approached it like it was a Super Rugby match and it was the physical and mental preparation you can’t replicate at training. We’ve got lots to work with in the next week. But take nothing away from Griquas. They came here to win and they did so.’
The Kings play the Force in Port Elizabeth to start their Super Rugby history.

HSSM: Most people were surprised by your
decision to sign for the EP Kings when all
of the big four franchises (Sharks, Bulls,
Cheetahs, and Western Province) were
after your signature. Could you tell us why
you chose the EP Kings?
Sergeal Petersen: I feel like I should give
back to what this province has done for
me over the past years, so I think starting
here and maybe ending up at a bigger
province is better option then starting at a
bigger province then moving back here.

@skopdiekan-249: all that shows is that a vast number of Proffesional rugby players recognize the Sharks as the best team to play for.

@ShaunB-227: @BrumbiesBoy-238: check these two colonial last outpost remnants licking each others behinds… at the glee expressed in Kings trials and tribulations when their silver spoon fed gobs are filled with the rankling denigration they only reserve for those that are not of their high moral whitey status of incorrigible contempt.
More colonialists that don’t belong in Africa..I wonder how come they all gather together on rugby websites in this darkest continent of white is right self righteous moralists…
This other Rhodesian renegade another riding under the radar of imperialist inflamed hypocrisy

Cape Town – Western Province have
signed two SA Schools flyhalves, Pieter
Jordaan (Free State) and Ryno Eksteen
(Blue Bulls), with the duo set to further
their rugby careers in Cape Town from
the start of 2013.
Jordaan, the 2011 SA Schools flyhalf,
and Eksteen, a current member of the
SA Schools set-up, were both in action
at the 2012 Craven Week tournament in
Port Elizabeth and great things are
expected of them in the future.
Eksteen was the leading points-scorer
at the 2012 Craven Week and helped
his team, the Blue Bulls, to victory in
the unofficial final against the Golden
Lions. Despite the treacherous
conditions on the final day, Eksteen
displayed an excellent amount of
composure and control from the crucial
flyhalf channel.
Jordaan, the younger brother of SA
Sevens and Under-20 star Paul, has
showed his value as a team man
throughout 2012. He has been playing
at centre for his school, Grey College,
which saw him selected in the midfield
at Craven Week and, ultimately, cost
him another crack at SA Schools
selection. However, he will be coming to
the Cape as a flyhalf, first and
foremost.
“We’re very happy with the line-up of
young players we have set to join the
Institute next year – it’s a talented
bunch of players,” said Jacques
Hanekom, the head of the WP Rugby
Institute in Stellenbosch, who also
confirmed that WP had secured the
signature of No 8 Steven Meiring, who
was a key man for the Bulls at Craven
Week alongside flyhalf Eksteen.
Jordaan, Eksteen and Meiring will all be
based at the WP Rugby Institute in
Stellenbosch from next year, as they
take a step up in their ‘rugby
education’, and Hanekom added: “All
these players were in high demand
across the country, so we’re excited to
have them coming to Cape Town and
looking forward to developing their
rugby even more.”
Paarl Boys’ High School scholar, Jean-
Luc du Plessis, has opted to further his
career in Durban with the Sharks -
despite being offered a place at the WP
Rugby Institute next year, as well as a
WP contract – but the arrival of Jordaan
and Eksteen, and the presence of Tim
Swiel and Dillyn Leyds, means there will
be plenty of talent competing for the
coveted No 10 jersey in Cape Town in
years to come.
Both Swiel and Leyds are still Under-20,
but are currently key members of the
DHL WP Under-21 team competing in
their provincial competition.
jean-luc chose the Sharks cos it will be easier to crack it rather than fight it out with Eksteen, Jordaan…

14 Feb 2013, 12:09 pm
@Transformation-261: Sorry, my original point was exactly this:
“Paarl Boys’ High School scholar, Jean-
Luc du Plessis, has opted to further his
career in Durban with the Sharks -
despite being offered a place at the WP
Rugby Institute next year”
Thank you for proving it
Fibby, fib, fib… Keep reaching umfanawami…

@skopdiekan-258: It’s feeding time…shut up and go eat your lentils…there’s a good boy.
14 Feb 2013, 12:11 pm
Cant believe, in this day and age, okes are still going on about where players came from and that they think its a big deal.
14 Feb 2013, 12:12 pm
@Transformation-251: and what type of exposure to big rugby is this kid going to get getting faaaaked for 80 min every weekend…… not a smart choice by the young man.
14 Feb 2013, 12:13 pm
@skopdiekan-262: Fark, I tell you one truth amongst all your blustering bullshittting balderdash, is that I and farken every poster on this site – whether in foreign or domestic lands outside the Cape bubble, are more African and indeed Saffa than anyone posting from that Fish Dorpie of faux European sophistication and exclusivity…
That includes you my little Springs Capie Uncle Tom…
14 Feb 2013, 12:14 pm
@BrumbiesBoy-267: Can’t. He needs to finish his third longdrop for the morning and then it’s on to the afternoon shift..
14 Feb 2013, 12:14 pm
@charo-259: Don’t worry, I’m sure you didn’t mean it that way.
But you are right, there was an article on her in last week’s Sunday Times together with a picture…can only think that this terrible incident was sparked by jealousy.
14 Feb 2013, 12:16 pm
@Heavens Game-243: I think that you are trapped in a fantasy bubble,a Walter Mitty character.
14 Feb 2013, 12:16 pm
@Heavens Game-265: and i said THE SHARKS WERE NOT HIS FIRST CHOICE, he only went there after seeing the COMPETITION at WP both Jordaan & Eksteen are rated more than Jean-luc who has his father’s name as his claim to fame
BOOM SHAKALAKA
14 Feb 2013, 12:17 pm
Sergeal Petersen a true heart and soul bred patriot.. not like these other little colloquial colonial cork-suckers who come priding themselves they are the born and bred heartbeat of their last outpost sell out buy in franchise bought through blood money by the brainless brigands of foreign legion festoons of fallacious superficiality.
14 Feb 2013, 12:17 pm
@John Galt-268: Yip that really boggles me as well. Who gives a flying fark. I couldn’t care it the whole Bulls team was born and bred in Slaapstad.
The only thing it will mean is there might be more places in Hatfield catering fot the ‘not so manly’ customer.

14 Feb 2013, 12:21 pm
@Transformation-274: So, in your roundabout way, what you are really saying is that my point stands, and yours doesnt really count.
Pleas take note. This is not an Eastern Cape tender evaluation… Dont make your problem mine…
BOOM!
14 Feb 2013, 12:23 pm
@Transformation-278: Hahahaha… You are reaching and grasping for anything and everything now…
Whatever the Lions may be – surrendermonkeys or not… The fact is, they are a better team than the Kings…
Fancy that…
14 Feb 2013, 12:25 pm
@skopdiekan-275: I reckon a bullshittting pseudo sabra is about as indigenous African as Bin Laden was Catholic…
14 Feb 2013, 12:29 pm
@gunther-234: Yes unfortunately I don’t think he has a leg to stand on.
14 Feb 2013, 12:30 pm
@Transformation-251:
“so I think starting
here and maybe ending up at a bigger

doesn’t sound too patriotic to me?

14 Feb 2013, 12:43 pm
@Heavens Game-280: better at losing 13 games yeah
14 Feb 2013, 12:43 pm
WP fcked up.. they should have left Jantjies to run off to the Sharkshits.. they should NOT have bought that second rate FH from PTA Eksteen and they should not have run after Jordaan UNTIL they had signed up Pollard and J L Du Plessis..
bad trade buying Jantjies, Jordaan and Eksteen and losing Du Plessis and Pollard in the process.. very poor horse trading by the WP suits.
However the end result is as it is and now they must punt on with Jordaan.. he is the one that can be the pivot for the future.. forget Jantjies and Eksteen and run with Jordaan and Swiel must stick at FB.
