Rebels off to winning start
15 Feb 2013
RICHARD FERGUSON reports on the Rebels securing four points in the Super Rugby season opener.
The Rebels took advantage of the Force’s poor discipline to win 30 – 23 after trailing 10 – 11 at half time.
The Force got off to a fantastic start, running out an eleven point lead in the opening half hour of the game. With the amount of possession and territory the Force had, they would have been disappointed to only score one try through Alfie Mafi.
Scott Higginbotham was yellow carded on debut for punching and the Force managed to score 8 points with the one man advantage. Higginbotham returned to the field of play and helped push a rolling maul over the line, Ged Robinson falling on the ball.
There was a reverse of fortune in the second half as first Chris Alcock and then Alby Mathewson was yellow carded, the Force having to play with thirteen men for seven minutes. The Rebels used this advantage to score their third try through Richard Kingi and get a healthy lead, before the Force hit back with a try of their own while still being a man down, Richard Brown scoring the try.
The Force will be disappointed that they lost this match, their goal kicking and discipline costing them this match. On the contrary, James O’Connor converted all his kicks to score half the team’s points. The Force are still without a win in the opening round of a Super Rugby season.
This Australian derby was far from the dull and boring that we had to sit through in 2012 and is a positive start to the new season.

Why do the teams I pick for Superbru always play shitrugby?
That’s it, from now on I will only pick the Sharks and Bulls to win

15 Feb 2013, 12:14 pm
Rebels come on hold out for these last 10 minutes.
15 Feb 2013, 12:15 pm
@grant10-77: At ruck and scrum time?
15 Feb 2013, 12:16 pm
@BrumbiesBoy-45: sabbatical indeed, good tobe back. This has been an enenjoyable opening game. Foleys coaching philosophy has done a 180 and kept the ball in hand. Massive contrast to what we saw with the tahs.
15 Feb 2013, 12:18 pm
@CSI:Rugby-80: Foley is coaching the Force now?
15 Feb 2013, 12:18 pm
The Tab had $23.00 for a draw in this one. Seven point gap at the moment. You never know….
15 Feb 2013, 12:20 pm
@Sasuke-81: yep and we were use to the kick-a-thon when he was at the tahs. Tonights game has been ball in hand. Great stuff.
15 Feb 2013, 12:24 pm
@grant10-52: do old folk use the term ‘cool’?
unlucky force, well done rebs
15 Feb 2013, 12:25 pm
Rebs by 7, nice start to me ‘bru 8)
15 Feb 2013, 12:27 pm
Sias is stupid. No wonder the Cheetah’s got rid of him.
15 Feb 2013, 12:27 pm
Force will be feeling that Mathewson yellow card, that was a shocking call by the ref. It was the difference in the end.
15 Feb 2013, 12:33 pm
off to a winning start on Bru (Paarl Pool) with margin points
15 Feb 2013, 12:34 pm
Peterson wraps up the the tail
Pak 338
15 Feb 2013, 12:37 pm
@Sasuke-79: ja
15 Feb 2013, 12:38 pm
I will expect one or two citing announcements for the yellow card events today. In the case of both fights the ref only got the retaliation, and not the first offense.
15 Feb 2013, 12:39 pm
That Irfan is a BIG unit.
His knees were level with the bails!
AB and Elgar were having a good chuckle at themselves standing next to him.
15 Feb 2013, 12:39 pm
Sigh…. I made Beale my captain instead of O’Conner thinking he would kick. Dammit people nobody answered my question about this!
15 Feb 2013, 12:46 pm
@Big Hit-84: cheeky sod
15 Feb 2013, 12:47 pm
Boom im off to a **** -25 points in fantasy rugby… long season ahead. No sympathy needed.
15 Feb 2013, 12:50 pm
Wow I cant say “c.r.a.p” on here
15 Feb 2013, 12:59 pm
When grown (men – boys) guessing they’re men , start playing kids games like fantasy rugby and superbru for prizes and suchlike then you start to know the world gone kinda haywire into a flat spin of irrelevancy.
Sias Ebersohn chucked that game away for Force just like he chucked so many away for Cheetahs before they should have left him off the field if they needed a win 7 points down. Typical saffa flyhalf put ball to boot at first instinct. When possession is name of the game and required and you in the attack zone and you kicking the ball out to hand over possession 3 times in succession then you got no business being a pivotal player looking for a win.
15 Feb 2013, 13:01 pm
@stormersboy-91:
Indeed.
Good theming Eben wasn’t out there today or he would have donnered someone for sure.
15 Feb 2013, 13:02 pm
@CSI:Rugby-95: Is that good???
15 Feb 2013, 13:03 pm
@Bagel-93: unlucky
60 from o connor as captain.
