Bok boost for Cheetahs
20 Feb 2013
RICHARD FERGUSON reports that the Cheetahs are able to call on Johan Goosen and Coenie Oosthuizen against the Sharks on Saturday evening.
Goosen has been named to start the match while Oosthuizen will make his impact felt off the bench. Oosthuizen has been taking part in full contact training, but it is felt that they want to test him from the bench rather than risk him from the start.
Goosen took no part in preseason games, being rested to fully overcome the heel that has kept him out of action. He joins young Piet van Zyl in the halfbacks, who starts ahead of Sarel Pretorius. The rest of the backline is filled with pace and experience, the newly signed Johann Sadie joining Rob Ebersohn in the centres while Raymond Rhule and Willie le Roux are expected to cause havoc on the wings.
The forward pack is less impressive with Heinrich Brussouw still out of action and both first choice locks being injured for the early part of the season. Francois Uys and Lood de Jager start in the second row while Philip van der Walt, Lappies Labuschagne and Frans Viljoen form the loose trio.
Boom Prinsloo, Sarel Pretorius and Ryno Benjamin are expected to inject some pace later in the match coming off the bench.
Cheetahs: 15.Hennie Daniller, 14.Willie le Roux, 13.Johann Sadie, 12.Robert Ebersohn, 11.Raymond Rhule, 10.Johan Goosen, 9.Piet van Zyl, 8.Philip van der Walt, 7.Lappies Labuschagne, 6.Frans Viljoen, 5.Francois Uys, 4.Lood de Jager, 3.Lourens Adriaanse,2. Adriaan Strauss (captain), 1.Trevor Nyakane. Replacements: 16.Ryno Barnes, 17.Coenie Oosthuizen, 18.Waltie Vermeulen, 19.Boom Prinsloo, 20.Sarel Pretorius, 21.Elgar Watts, 22.Ryno Benjamin.

More injuries incoming….sigh.

We’ll have to hold the Sharks up front. Our pack is definitely our weakness but if we can get good ball to our backline we will have a chance. Defence still biggest concern.
20 Feb 2013, 14:54 pm
I dont think Coenie or Goosen will get through this season..
My call, Coenie out within the first four weeks while Goosen will not be able to compete for the Springbok jersey..

@Atlas-2: LOL
20 Feb 2013, 15:06 pm
great backline and awesome loosies – we are a bit light on our tight five but if we get good quick turn-over ball this backline could be explosive
Hope our defence is better than last year

@Richard Ferguson-5: Why? You feel Goosen is injury prone? Thought that physically he might just not have been ready for Super Rugby last season. Because of those injuries he might not be ready this season either.

@Cheetahs01-8:
With regards to Coenie, medical reports seem to suggest that he has a very real problem with his neck, and to take that chance as a prop is silly. So any slight neck pain will result in him missing a few weeks to fully recover.
As for Goosen, he goes down far too many times in a game, as if the knocks and tackles really hurt him and takes an effect on him. Elgar Watts will get his fair share of game time from the bench as a result.

Go Sharks, Bulls and Force !!!!!!!
20 Feb 2013, 15:22 pm
is hendrick brussow injured?
20 Feb 2013, 15:24 pm
@Richard Ferguson-9: Yeah I’m aware of Coenie’s problems but I hope you wrong with regards to Goosen.
I agree, he does stay down a lot, but I’m hoping that within time he will improve enough physically to match his obvious natural talent. Not sure if that will be this season but I hold thumbs. As seen last year, he makes a massive difference to our performance.

20 Feb 2013, 15:33 pm
@goodstuff-3: Probably so. But you can say that for every team this season. From Spies, Burger and Watson to name a few. Would name a few Sharks, but their injury-prone stars are…. out injured.
20 Feb 2013, 15:52 pm
@pauli boy-11: I dont know about Hendrick Brussouw, but Heindrich Brussouw is currently injured.

@W.P-16: Hahahahaha
20 Feb 2013, 16:13 pm
Cheetahs have no locks and they better hope Coenie lasts for Adriaanse is poor. They need Brussouw in that side as well
20 Feb 2013, 16:34 pm
LOOD DE JAGER going to surprise folk this season. I think he will be a household name by the end of the season and right up there in the no 4 pecking order, pitty Muller is not fit, him juan and brussow all fit would make an awesome pack.
20 Feb 2013, 16:46 pm
@Dusky-10: I see you have 7 as well
20 Feb 2013, 16:52 pm
I think Plumtree has made a mistake with his loosies Kankowski, Coetzee and Botes. Sharks loosies is in my opinion always unbalanced if neither Alberts or Deysel is chosen.
I think that the Sharks centers might won them this game. Not so sure that Cheetah defence in the centers are that great.
19.rvanaardt , I’m with you regarding Lood de Jager – he looks like a real talent.
Cheetahs, listen carefully for some great advice: Ask Toyota for a bit of xtra money and get JC Janse van Rensburg! He will make a big difference to your scrum.
20 Feb 2013, 16:55 pm
@Jonck-21: Will be a tough game. Cheetahs should never be taken lightly.
20 Feb 2013, 16:56 pm
The Goose is still extremely young. He will fill out a bit over the next few years. It’s really a question of not doing too much damage in the interim. Youngsters mature at different ages.
20 Feb 2013, 16:58 pm
Go CHeetahs , Lions , Stormers! Oh hang on….
20 Feb 2013, 17:08 pm
@Slappes-24: Test rugby…
20 Feb 2013, 17:10 pm
@Atlas-20: Absolutely. We wouldn’t want gwanty running away here again crying like a primary school girl because people are ugly to him.
20 Feb 2013, 17:17 pm
@Transie ..hahahahahahaha!
20 Feb 2013, 18:12 pm
Seems like Juan Smith still might return.

20 Feb 2013, 18:14 pm
@Dusky-15: Hehe, who are these two?
20 Feb 2013, 18:14 pm
Come on Goose, stay injury free and it’s plain sailing for the rest of your rugby career.
20 Feb 2013, 19:14 pm
Klap hulle, Cheetahs! Doenit vir die unit.
20 Feb 2013, 23:15 pm
Goosen being “rushed” into the side again… In SA it is dangerous for a youngster to talented!! He is not as big as Frans Steyn at that age, and Patick Lambie was given the fullback role for a season or two (to give him time to “toughen up” a bit)… I am just scared that we will lose a Mega-talent way before his time due to injuries. So glad that the Bulls are not doing the same with Jan Serfontein – we need to cultivate our youngsters – the saying “if you are good enough, you are old enough” is nonsense!!

@ruggacraze-32:

Dr Mamphela Ramphele demonstrated a bit of political naivety in my opinion with a name for her new political ‘platform’
Agang does not go down well.
A better option would have been ‘ Chisa Nyama ® ‘
The people hear it, they know it and it makes them smile.
21 Feb 2013, 08:44 am
@Sheriff-36: What does Chisa Nyama mean?
21 Feb 2013, 08:49 am
@BrumbiesBoy-37:
Do you have access to Google?
Go and have a look and report back on your findings
21 Feb 2013, 08:53 am
hope goosen has some luck and stays uninjured.
he is a huge player for us going forward. Same with Coenie.
21 Feb 2013, 08:55 am
@Sheriff-38: Thanks, will do.
21 Feb 2013, 09:14 am
@Sheriff-36: Skop won’t like that
21 Feb 2013, 10:34 am
@Sheriff-38:
@Dilligafrican-41: OK, googled and had a chuckle myself.
But I do agree with Dilligafrican, Skop will most definitely not like it and will be on to the Independent Electoral Commission in no time.

Wow this is a seriously exciting backline. Amazing attacking threat and to think Benjamin, Pretorius & Watts to come on after…. Impressive.
The cheetahs are 1 or 2 players in the pack away from being a well balanced side
If rumours that Juan Smith could have an opp and make a comeback are true and if they can get a few signings I would like to see
8 Arno Botha to sign from Bulls
7 Juan Smith / Jean Deysel
6 Heinrich Brussouw
5 Francois Viljoen
4 Waltie Vermeulen
3 Caylib Oosthuzyen
2 Adriaan Strauss
1 Coenie Oosthuzyen
Maybe resigning Ashley Johnson and WP Nel/Wian Du Preez too
That backline has huge potential
Have your say
